Legendary Skills & Resetting Skills

Master Skyrim's Legendary Skills. Reset skills to level 100 to regain perk points and unlock infinite character progression for any build.

Reach the pinnacle of your character's development by mastering Legendary Skills. This advanced mechanic allows you to reset a skill to level 15, regaining the perk points spent, while retaining your character's overall level. This enables infinite progression and the ability to perfect any build.

What are Legendary Skills?

Once a skill reaches level 100, it can be made 'Legendary'. When you choose to make a skill Legendary:

  • The skill's level resets to 15.
  • All perk points invested in that skill are refunded.
  • Your character's overall level increases by one for each skill made Legendary.
  • The skill's progress will start anew from level 15.

This system allows you to continuously level up your character by repeatedly making skills Legendary, effectively providing infinite progression. It's particularly useful for characters who want to master multiple skill trees or experiment with different builds without being permanently locked into certain choices.

How to Make a Skill Legendary

To make a skill Legendary:

  1. Reach level 100 in any skill.
  2. Open your Skills menu.
  3. You will see an option to 'Make Legendary' for any skill that has reached level 100.
  4. Select the skill you wish to make Legendary.
  5. Confirm your choice.

Be aware that once you make a skill Legendary, you lose all the benefits and perks associated with that skill until you level it up again. For example, if you make your One-Handed skill Legendary, you will no longer benefit from perks like 'Armsman' until you re-earn them.

When to Make a Skill Legendary

There are several strategic reasons to make a skill Legendary:

  • Infinite Leveling: The primary reason is to continue gaining character levels and thus improve your base stats (Health, Magicka, Stamina) and gain more perk points for other skills.
  • Respec Perks: If you've invested perks in a skill that you no longer use or wish to change your build, making it Legendary refunds those points.
  • Mastering Multiple Skill Trees: It allows you to become proficient in a wide array of skills, even those you might not have initially focused on. For example, a warrior might make their combat skills Legendary to invest more heavily in magic or crafting.
  • Unlocking Higher Difficulty Content: If you're playing on a higher difficulty setting, the ability to continually increase your stats and gain more perks can be essential for survival.

Strategic Considerations

  • Prioritize Essential Skills: It's often wise to keep your primary combat or magic skills at level 100 for as long as possible to maximize their effectiveness.
  • Leveling Up Quickly: Some skills are easier to level up than others. Skills like Alchemy, Smithing, Enchanting, and Illusion (with specific spells like Muffle) can be leveled very quickly, making them prime candidates for making Legendary.
  • Don't Respec Too Early: If you're heavily reliant on the perks of a particular skill, consider leveling it up again before making it Legendary to regain those benefits.
  • Impact on Difficulty: Be mindful that as your character level increases, so does the difficulty of enemies. Making skills Legendary can lead to a sificant increase in challenge.

Example Scenario

Imagine you are a warrior who has maxed out One-Handed, Heavy Armor, and Block. You have 100 perk points invested. You decide you want to explore magic. You can make your One-Handed skill Legendary. You get your perk points back, and your character level increases. You can then reinvest those points into Destruction or Conjuration. As you level up your One-Handed skill again, you will eventually reach 100 and can make it Legendary again, continuing the cycle.

Resetting Skills (Without Legendary)

there is no way to simply 'reset' a skill without making it Legendary. The Legendary system is the game's intended method for skill redistribution and infinite leveling.
