How to Beat Dragons (General)

Defeat any dragon in Skyrim. Learn dragon weaknesses, effective Shouts like Dragonrend, and strategies for ground and air combat.

Dragons are the iconic enemies of Skyrim, appearing randomly in the world and as part of the main quest. They come in various types (Blood, Frost, Elder, Ancient, Revered, Legendary), each with increasing health, damage, and elemental breath attacks. Fighting dragons requires adaptability and strategic use of your Dragonborn powers.

Weaknesses:

  • Dragonrend Shout: Forces them to land, making them vulnerable to melee.
  • Elemental Weaknesses: Frost Dragons are weak to fire, Fire Dragons are weak to frost.
  • Vulnerable When Landed: Their underside and head are often prime targets.

Strategy:

  • Dragonrend: This is your most important tool. Use it as soon as possible to ground the dragon.
  • Ranged Phase: When flying, use bows, destruction spells, or Shouts like 'Fire Breath' or 'Ice Form'. Use cover (rocks, buildings) to avoid their breath attacks.
  • Melee Phase: Once grounded, unleash your most powerful melee attacks or close-range spells. Target their head for critical damage.
  • Shouts: 'Elemental Fury' (melee), 'Slow Time', 'Become Ethereal' (for avoiding breath attacks) are all highly effective.
  • Companions: A ranged companion can provide consistent damage, while a melee companion can draw aggro.
  • Potions: Carry elemental resistance potions relevant to the dragon's breath type.

Rewards:

Dragon Bones and Dragon Scales (valuable crafting materials), and a Dragon Soul (used to unlock Words of Power).
