Crossbows & Ammunition

The Dawnguard DLC introduces the formidable crossbow, a powerful ranged weapon that offers a distinct alternative to traditional bows. With its increased damage and unique ammunition, the crossbow can be a devastating tool in the hands of a skilled marksman, especially against tougher foes.

Crossbows in Skyrim are manufactured by the Dawnguard faction and are primarily associated with their questline. They are distinct from bows in their mechanics and ammunition. Crossbows deal higher base damage than most bows and have a slower rate of fire, emphasizing precision over rapid volleys. The primary ammunition for crossbows are bolts. These are similar to arrows but are specifically desed for crossbows. The Dawnguard faction crafts and utilizes several types of bolts:

  • Standard Bolts: The basic ammunition, effective for general use.
  • Exploding Bolts: These bolts deal additional elemental damage (fire, frost, or shock) upon impact, making them excellent for dealing with heavily armored enemies or groups.
  • Dwarven Bolts: Crafted from Dwarven metal, these bolts are particularly effective against automatons and deal sificant damage.

To craft crossbows and bolts, you will need to progress through the Dawnguard questline and gain access to the Dwarven Crossbow schematic. Once you have this, you can craft them at a forge using appropriate materials, primarily Dwarven metal ingots. The Dawnguard themselves will also provide you with a supply of bolts as you progress. Alternatively, you can purchase bolts from Dawnguard merchants. The Enhanced Dwarven Crossbow is a unique artifact that can be found during the Dawnguard questline, offering superior damage and potentially unique enchantments. Crossbows are particularly effective against enemies that are resistant to arrows or require a sificant burst of damage. Their higher base damage makes them excellent for hunting large game or taking down powerful monsters. When using a crossbow, it's crucial to manage your ammunition, as bolts can be scarcer than arrows, especially early on. Prioritize using exploding bolts against tougher enemies and standard bolts for more common threats. The tactical advantage of a crossbow lies in its power and precision, making it a valuable addition to any ranged combatant's arsenal.

Crossbow Ammunition Types:

  • Standard Bolts: Basic ammunition.
  • Exploding Bolts: Deal elemental damage (fire, frost, shock).
  • Dwarven Bolts: High damage, effective against automatons.
