The Civil War: Stormcloaks vs. Imperials
The Civil War is a central conflict in Skyrim, dividing the province between the native Stormcloaks, who fight for Skyrim's independence, and the Imperial Legion, loyal to the Tamrielic Empire. Your involvement in this war will shape the political landscape of Skyrim and impact the lives of its citizens.
To join either faction, you must first complete the main quest up to the point where you are asked to report to the Jarl of Whiterun about the dragon attack. You will then be directed to either speak with General Tullius of the Imperial Legion in Solitude or Ulfric Stormcloak, the leader of the Stormcloaks, in Windhelm. The initial quest to join is either Joining the Legion or Joining the Stormcloaks.
If you choose to join the Stormcloaks, your early quests will involve rallying support and engaging in skirmishes against Imperial forces. Quests like The Jagged Crown will see you retrieving a symbol of Stormcloak power, while Message to Whiterun and Battle for Whiterun will involve strategic maneuvers to capture key locations. The Stormcloak path emphasizes fighting for Skyrim's freedom and traditional Nord culture.
Conversely, joining the Imperial Legion will involve quelling the Stormcloak rebellion and restoring order to the province. Quests such as Joining the Legion will see you proving your loyalty, followed by missions like The Jagged Crown (Imperial version) and Message to Whiterun (Imperial version), which focus on undermining Stormcloak efforts. The Imperial path champions unity and stability under the Empire's rule.
Regardless of your chosen side, the Civil War questline involves a series of large-scale battles for control of Skyrim's holds. You'll participate in assaults on forts like Fort Neugrad and Fort Snowhawk, and eventually engage in epic sieges on major cities like Solitude or Windhelm. These battles are often intense and require strategic use of your combat skills and any allies you've gathered.
A unique aspect of the Civil War is that you can influence the outcome of battles by completing specific objectives. For example, during a fort assault, you might be tasked with destroying siege weapons or eliminating enemy commanders. Successfully completing these objectives can sificantly weaken the enemy's defenses and pave the way for victory.
the Civil War questline is mutually exclusive with the other faction. Once you commit to one side, you cannot join the other. Your choice will have lasting consequences, including changes in the rulers of the holds and the overall political climate of Skyrim.
There is also a questline for the Dark Brotherhood called Destroy the Dark Brotherhood!, which becomes available if you choose to betray them. This questline is separate from the Civil War but can be triggered by certain events.
The Civil War questline offers a sificant amount of content and replayability. Each side provides a distinct narrative and set of challenges, allowing players to experience Skyrim's conflict from different perspectives. Consider your character's motivations and the kind of Skyrim you wish to see when making your choice.
