Enchanting & Spell Fortification
Master the arcane arts of enchantment to imbue your gear with potent magical effects. Fortifying your spells through enchanting is a cornerstone of powerful mage builds, allowing you to cast with greater efficiency and devastating effect.
Enchanting in Skyrim allows you to add magical properties to weapons, armor, and jewelry. This is achieved by using an Arcane Enchanter, a filled Soul Gem, and a disenchanted item to learn its enchantment. Once learned, you can apply that enchantment to any unenchanted item. The strength of the enchantment depends on the type of Soul Gem used (Petty, Lesser, Common, Greater, Grand, and Black Soul Gems) and your Enchanting skill level. Perks in the Enchanting skill tree allow you to create more powerful enchantments, apply two enchantments to a single item, and even learn new enchantment types.
Spell fortification is a prime example of how powerful enchanting can be. By enchanting gear with effects that reduce the magicka cost of specific schools of magic (Destruction, Alteration, Illusion, Conjuration, Restoration), you can sificantly lower or even eliminate the magicka cost of your spells. This allows for sustained spellcasting and the ability to unleash devastating barrages of magic without worrying about running out of magicka.
Here's how to effectively use Enchanting for Spell Fortification:
- Learn Enchantments: Disenchant magical items you find to learn their enchantments. Focus on learning enchantments that reduce magicka costs for the spell schools you use most often.
- Gather Soul Gems: Soul Gems are essential for enchanting. You can find them in dungeons, purchase them from court wizards and general merchants, or fill them yourself by defeating magical creatures and using the Soul Trap spell. Black Soul Gems are particularly valuable as they can capture the souls of humanoids, which are generally larger.
- Invest in Enchanting Perks: The Enchanting skill tree offers several key perks for spellcasters:
- Enchanter: Increases the effectiveness of all enchanted items.
- Insightful Enchanter: Increases the effectiveness of skill enchantments (like Fortify Destruction).
- Corpus Enchanter: Increases the effectiveness of Health, Magicka, and Stamina enchantments.
- Extra Effect: Allows you to apply two enchantments to the same item. This is crucial for maximizing spell cost reduction.
- Target Specific Spell Schools: Focus on enchanting gear to reduce the magicka cost for your primary offensive spell school, usually Destruction. For example, you might aim for:
- Head: Fortify Destruction
- Chest: Fortify Destruction
- Hands: Fortify Destruction (or Fortify Archery if you use enchanted arrows)
- Ring: Fortify Destruction
- Necklace: Fortify Destruction
- Achieving Zero Magicka Cost: With sufficient Enchanting skill, the right perks (especially Extra Effect), and Grand or Black Soul Gems, you can achieve a 100% reduction in magicka cost for a spell school. This means you can cast Destruction spells infinitely without expending any magicka.
- Alchemy Synergy: Combine Enchanting with Alchemy. Potions of Fortify Enchanting can boost your enchanting skill temporarily, allowing you to create even more powerful enchantments. Conversely, Fortify Alchemy enchantments on your gear can boost your potion-making abilities.
- Crafting Gear: The best gear for spell fortification is typically armor pieces (head, chest, hands) and jewelry (ring, necklace).
Mastering Enchanting for spell fortification transforms you into an unstoppable force, capable of unleashing a continuous torrent of magical destruction upon your enemies.
