Crafting & Professions — The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Guide

Skyrim's world is rich with resources waiting to be transformed into powerful gear and useful items through its robust crafting system. From forging legendary weapons and armor to brewing potent alchemical concoctions and enchanting magical artifacts, mastering these professions is crucial for any Dragonborn seeking to thrive. These skills not only provide tangible benefits but also offer a deep sense of accomplishment and immersion.

The primary crafting professions in Skyrim are Smithing, Alchemy, and Enchanting. Each has its own dedicated skill tree, offering unique perks that enhance your abilities and unlock new crafting possibilities. Investing in these skills allows you to create items superior to what you can typically find through exploration or purchase.

Smithing is the art of creating and improving weapons and armor. To smith, you'll need to visit a forge. Raw materials like iron ore, leather strips, and ingots are essential. As you smith items, you'll gain experience and level up your Smithing skill. The perk tree allows you to specialize in different armor types (light or heavy) and weapon categories, as well as unlock the ability to craft and improve unique sets of gear, such as Dwarven, Elven, Orcish, Ebony, Daedric, and Dragonbone.

Key Smithing perks include:

  • Steel Smithing, Dwarven Smithing, etc.: Unlocks the ability to craft and improve items of that material tier.
  • Arcane Blacksmith: Allows you to improve enchanted weapons and armor.
  • Dragon Armor: Essential for crafting and improving the powerful Dragonplate and Dragonscale armor sets.

Alchemy, as detailed in another section, involves brewing potions and poisons using ingredients gathered from the wilderness. This skill is vital for healing, restoring magicka and stamina, and creating offensive concoctions to debilitate enemies. The Alchemy perk tree enhances the potency and duration of your brews.

Enchanting allows you to imbue weapons and armor with magical properties. To enchant, you'll need an Arcane Enchanter, soul gems (filled with captured souls), and the enchantments themselves, which are learned by disenchanting existing magical items. The Enchanting perk tree allows you to learn more powerful enchantments, apply multiple enchantments to a single item, and increase the strength of your applied magic.

Key Enchanting perks include:

  • Enchanter (Novice to Master): Increases the strength of your enchantments.
  • Insightful Enchanter: Makes skill enchantments stronger.
  • Corpus Enchanter: Makes health and magicka enchantments stronger.
  • Extra Effect: Allows you to apply two enchantments to the same item.

Beyond these core three, other professions contribute to your character's capabilities. Cooking, available with the Hearthfire DLC, allows you to create food items that provide temporary buffs. Woodcutting and Mining are resource-gathering professions that feed directly into Smithing and other crafting endeavors.

To excel in crafting, actively seek out resources. Mine ore veins, chop down trees, and gather every alchemical ingredient you find. Disenchant unwanted magical items to learn new enchantments. Invest your perk points wisely in the relevant skill trees to unlock the full potential of your crafting abilities. A well-crafted set of gear can often outperform even the rarest legendary items found in the wild.
