Dragonrend Dragon Shout
Dragonrend is arguably the most crucial Dragon Shout for any Dragonborn facing the ancient threat of Alduin and his kin. Unlike other shouts that deal damage or cause fear, Dragonrend's unique power is its ability to force a dragon to land, making it vulnerable to ground-based attacks. This shout is essential for completing the main questline and for any dragon encounter where the beast refuses to descend.
The Dragonrend shout has three words of power, each contributing to its effectiveness in grounding dragons:
- Joor (Mortal)
- Zah (Finite)
- Frul (Curse)
When fully learned, Dragonrend effectively 'curses' a dragon, making it perceive itself as mortal and forcing it to land. The first word, Joor, makes a dragon briefly perceive mortality. The second word, Zah, extends this perception and makes the dragon attempt to land. The full shout, Frul, ensures the dragon lands and remains grounded for a sificant duration.
The words of Dragonrend are unique in their acquisition, as they are all learned in a single, pivotal location during the main quest:
- Joor (Mortal): This word is learned during the main quest, specifically at the Throat of the World, during the quest 'Alduin's Bane'. You will confront Alduin here, and the Greybeards will guide you to the Word Wall.
- Zah (Finite): This word is also learned at the Throat of the World during the 'Alduin's Bane' quest. It is found on the same Word Wall as the first word.
- Frul (Curse): The final word is learned at the Throat of the World during the 'Alduin's Bane' quest, on the same Word Wall.
you cannot simply wander to the Throat of the World and learn these words at any time. They are intrinsically tied to the progression of the main story. You must reach the 'Alduin's Bane' quest to access this Word Wall.
Once you have learned all three words, you will need to spend three Dragon Souls to unlock the full power of Dragonrend. This shout is indispensable for any Dragonborn who wishes to confront and defeat the dragons plaguing Skyrim.
Combat Strategy with Dragonrend:
- When a dragon is airborne and proving difficult to hit, use Dragonrend to force it to land.
- Once grounded, unleash your most powerful attacks, whether they are melee, archery, or spells.
- Be aware that dragons can take flight again after a period, so be prepared to reapply Dragonrend if necessary.
- The shout is particularly effective against Alduin himself, as it's the only way to bring him down during certain phases of the fight.
