Dragon Lairs & Word Walls

Locate and conquer Dragons in Skyrim. This guide details Dragon Lairs, teaches you how to defeat them, and explains how to unlock new Shouts from Word Walls.

Dragon Lairs & Word Walls

Dragon lairs are formidable locations scattered across Skyrim, serving as both dangerous encounters and vital sources of Dragon Souls and Shouts. These areas are typically marked on your map by a dragon head icon once discovered. Venturing into a dragon lair means facing a powerful dragon, but the rewards are immense, including the soul needed to unlock new Shouts and the discovery of Word Walls that teach you new Dragon Words.

Dragon lairs are often found in remote, elevated locations, such as mountaintops, ancient ruins, or rocky outcrops. The presence of a dragon is usually saled by its shadow flying overhead or its roar echoing through the wilderness. Upon arrival, you'll often find a desated area where the dragon will land to engage you in combat. These areas are usually barren and exposed, offering little cover.

Common Dragon Lair Locations:

  • Ancient Nord Ruins: Many lairs are situated atop or within crumbling Nordic structures.
  • Mountain Peaks: High altitudes are favored by dragons, making peaks like the Throat of the World prime real estate.
  • Rocky Plateaus: Open, elevated areas provide good vantage points for dragons.
  • Near Major Cities (but not too close): Often found in the surrounding wilderness of cities like Whiterun, Solitude, and Windhelm.

After defeating a dragon, its soul will be absorbed by the Dragonborn, which is essential for unlocking the power of learned Dragon Words. Following the dragon's defeat, a Word Wall will typically be revealed or become accessible. These ancient stone tablets are inscribed with Dragon language and will teach you a new Word for a Shout. Each Word Wall teaches one Word of a specific Shout, and you'll need to find three Words for each Shout to fully master it.

Interacting with Word Walls:

  1. Approach the Wall: Stand close to the Word Wall.
  2. Learn the Word: The game will prompt you to learn the new Dragon Word.
  3. Unlock with Dragon Soul: Once learned, you must use a Dragon Soul to unlock its power. Navigate to the 'Shouts' menu, select the Shout, and press the unlock button.
