Dragon Lore & History

Dragons are the ancient, powerful beings that dominate the skies of Skyrim and are central to its main quest. Their lore is deep, encompassing their origins, their relationship with mortals, and their ultimate purpose in the world.

Dragons are not merely beasts; they are intelligent, ancient beings with a complex history tied to the very fabric of Nirn. In the Elder Scrolls lore, dragons are considered the firstborn of Akatosh, the Dragon God of Time. They were created to enforce the divine order and maintain the balance of the world. Their language, the Thu'um, is the Dovahzul, and it is through this language that they wield immense power, capable of shaping reality itself.

Historically, dragons once ruled Tamriel, with humans serving them as thralls. This era, known as the Dragon Cult, was a time of great reverence and fear. However, the Nords, led by the legendary figureYsgramor, eventually rebelled against their draconic overlords. Through great sacrifice and the development of their own Thu'um, the Nords managed to defeat and drive away most of the dragons, establishing their own dominion.

The dragons, led by their most powerful among them, Alduin the World-Eater, retreated to Sovngarde, the Nordic afterlife. Alduin, who was meant to devour the world and usher in a new cycle of creation, was betrayed by his own kind and cast into the time-stream by the ancient Nord heroes. His return in Skyrim marks the fulfillment of a prophecy and the beginning of the end for the current era.

Key Aspects of Dragon Lore:

  • Akatosh and the Dragonborn: Dragons are intrinsically linked to Akatosh, the supreme deity in the Nine Divines. The Dragonborn, an individual with the soul of a dragon, is seen as Akatosh's champion, destined to combat Alduin and restore balance.
  • The Thu'um (Dragon Shouts): The ability to speak the language of dragons and harness its power is the defining characteristic of the Dragonborn. Shouts are not learned through magic but are spoken words of power that resonate with the dragon's soul.
  • Alduin the World-Eater: The primary antagonist of Skyrim. Alduin is the eldest and most powerful of Akatosh's children. His purpose is to consume the world and begin a new cycle of creation. His return sifies the end of the current age.
  • Dragon Priests: These were ancient mortals who served the dragons and were granted immense power and immortality by Alduin. They wield potent magic and dragon shouts and are often found guarding ancient Nordic tombs. Their masks grant powerful enchantments.
  • Dragon Souls: When a dragon is slain by the Dragonborn, their soul is absorbed, granting the Dragonborn the ability to unlock new shouts or strengthen existing ones.
  • Dragon Language (Dovahzul): The language of dragons is a powerful force in itself. Learning words of power allows the Dragonborn to use shouts.
  • The Dragon War: The ancient conflict between Nords and dragons, which led to the dragons' retreat and the establishment of human dominance.
  • Sovngarde: The Nordic afterlife, where the souls of brave warriors go. It is also where Alduin and the remaining dragons retreated after the Dragon War.
