Guards & Law Enforcement
Navigating the law in Skyrim is a crucial aspect of survival. The guards are the enforcers of justice across the Holds, and understanding their role, their reactions to your actions, and the consequences of breaking the law is essential for a smooth playthrough.
Skyrim's guards are stationed in cities, towns, and at various checkpoints throughout the Holds. Their primary function is to maintain order, protect citizens, and apprehend criminals. They are equipped with distinctive armor, often bearing the symbol of their respective Hold, and carry several weapons. Their presence is a constant reminder of the established authority within the province.
When you commit a crime, such as theft, assault, or murder, guards will immediately become hostile. They will attempt to apprehend you, and if you resist, they will attack. The severity of the crime determines the bounty placed on your head. A small bounty might result in a single guard confronting you, while a large bounty could see multiple guards and even bounty hunters pursuing you.
Here's how guards and law enforcement work in Skyrim:
- Crime and Detection: Guards have a line of sight and can hear your actions. If you are caught committing a crime, they will initiate combat. Pickpocketing, lockpicking, and attacking citizens are common crimes.
- Bounties: When you commit a crime, a bounty is placed on your head in that specific Hold. The amount of the bounty depends on the severity of the crime. This bounty is displayed on your screen.
- Paying Off Bounties: You can pay off your bounty to the guard captain in any city within that Hold. This will clear your criminal record in that Hold, and guards will no longer be hostile. The cost of the bounty increases with its severity.
- Going to Jail: Alternatively, you can choose to go to jail. This will result in a loss of some time (you'll wake up later), and your stolen goods will be confiscated. However, it's a way to clear your name without paying a hefty sum.
- Resisting Arrest: If you resist arrest, guards will attack you. If you manage to defeat them, your bounty will increase sificantly, and you may be unable to pay it off in that Hold.
- Factions and Guards: Membership in certain factions, like the Thieves Guild or the Dark Brotherhood, can offer ways to deal with bounties or avoid detection. For example, fences in the Thieves Guild will buy stolen goods, and certain Dark Brotherhood abilities can help you disappear.
- The 'Sweet Roll' Meme: You've likely heard guards exclaim, "I used to be an adventurer like you, then I took an arrow in the knee." This iconic line is spoken by guards across Skyrim, regardless of their current role.
- Law Enforcement Beyond Guards: In addition to city guards, bounty hunters may be dispatched to track you down if you have a sificant bounty.
Strategies for Dealing with Guards:
- Stealth: use stealth to avoid detection when pickpocketing or committing other crimes.
- Fast Travel: If you have a small bounty, fast traveling to a different Hold can sometimes make it disappear, especially if you haven't been detected by guards in that new area.
- Save Before Committing Crimes: It's always wise to save your game before attempting risky actions that might incur a bounty.
- Join the Thieves Guild: The Thieves Guild offers quests and services that can help you manage stolen goods and reduce bounties.
Understanding the guard system is key to avoiding unnecessary conflict and maintaining your freedom as you explore Skyrim.
