Trainers & Skill Training
Improving your skills is paramount to becoming a powerful Dragonborn, and Skyrim offers a dedicated system of trainers who can impart their expertise for a price. These individuals can sificantly accelerate your character's progression, allowing you to unlock new abilities and perks faster.
There are trainers available for every skill in the game, scattered across various cities and settlements. Each trainer has a specific skill they specialize in and a maximum skill level they can train you up to. For example, a Master-level trainer can train you up to level 90 in their respective skill. Trainers are categorized by their expertise: Novice (up to level 25), Apprentice (up to level 50), Journeyman (up to level 75), and Expert (up to level 90). There are also Master trainers who can train you up to level 100. The cost of training increases with the trainer's level and your current skill level. Typically, each training session costs gold equal to your current skill level plus 100 gold. This means training becomes progressively more expensive as you become more skilled. To find trainers, you can often ask innkeepers for rumors or check your journal for hints. Many trainers are also associated with specific factions, such as the College of Winterhold for magic skills or the Companions for combat skills. For instance, Farenjar in Markarth trains Block up to level 75, while Ghorbash the Iron Hand, a Companion, trains Heavy Armor up to level 90. Some trainers might require you to complete a small task or quest before they agree to train you. It's also worth noting that completing certain quests or joining specific factions can unlock unique training opportunities or reduce training costs. For example, completing the questline for the Thieves Guild can lead to trainers offering better rates or unlocking new training options. When considering training, it's often more cost-effective to train skills you find difficult to level through normal gameplay or to use training to quickly boost a skill to unlock a crucial perk. Remember that you can only train five times per character level. Therefore, strategically using your training sessions is key to maximizing your character's potential. Some players choose to save their gold for training rather than spending it on gear, especially in the early to mid-game.
