Adopting Children (Hearthfire)

The Hearthfire DLC for Skyrim introduces the heartwarming ability to adopt children, adding a personal touch to your Dragonborn's life. This feature allows you to bring orphaned children from various cities into your custom-built homes, creating a family and a sense of belonging. It's a rewarding experience that adds a new dimension to gameplay beyond combat and exploration.

To adopt children, you must first own a house with a child's bedroom. This means building a homestead with at least one bedroom furnished with a child's bed. Once your home is ready, you can visit an orphanage or speak with children in various cities. The key requirement is that you must be married to adopt. If you are not married, you will need to find a spouse first.

The process of adoption is straightforward:

  1. Build a Home: Construct a homestead with a child's bedroom. This requires purchasing land from a Jarl's steward and gathering building materials like quarried stone, sawn logs, and eventually, furnishings.
  2. Get Married (Optional but Recommended): If you wish to adopt, you'll need to be married. You can marry any eligible NPC by completing their favor quest and then obtaining an Amulet of Mara from Maramal in Riften.
  3. Visit an Orphanage or City: The primary locations for finding adoptable children are the Honorhall Orphanage in Riften and various cities like Whiterun, Solitude, and Windhelm.
  4. Speak to a Child: Approach a child and initiate dialogue. If you are married and have a suitable home, the option to adopt will become available.
  5. Choose Your Child: You can adopt up to two children. If you have multiple homes with child's bedrooms, you can move your adopted family between them.

The children available for adoption are:

  • From Honorhall Orphanage: Lucia, Sofie, Alesan, Britte, and Constance. You'll need to complete the "Immoral Advice" quest for Constance to adopt her.
  • From Cities: Some children in cities, like Braith in Whiterun or Brynjolf in Solitude, can also be adopted if their circumstances allow.

Once adopted, your children will live in your home, interact with you, and engage in daily activities. They can be given toys, and their presence adds a lively atmosphere to your homestead. You can also ass a Housecarl to protect them if you have one. Adopting children is a peaceful and fulfilling aspect of Hearthfire, allowing you to experience a different side of Skyrim's world.

Remember that children are vulnerable and can be affected by the dangers of Skyrim. While they are generally safe within your homes, it's wise to ensure your homes are well-protected, especially if you have a Steward who can hire guards.
