Merchants & Bartering
Navigating the economy of Skyrim is crucial for any aspiring Dragonborn. From selling your hard-earned loot to acquiring essential gear, understanding merchants and the art of bartering will significantly impact your journey. This section will guide you through maximizing your profits and finding the right vendors for your needs.
Types of Merchants and Their Wares
Skyrim features a diverse range of merchants, each specializing in particular goods. Knowing who sells what can save you valuable time and septims.
- General Goods Merchants: These are your all-purpose vendors, found in most towns and cities. Examples include Lucan Valerius at the Riverwood Trader and Belethor in Belethor's General Goods in Whiterun. They buy and sell a wide variety of items, including weapons, armor, food, and miscellaneous goods. Their gold reserves are usually moderate.
- Blacksmiths: Specializing in weapons and armor, blacksmiths like Alvor in Riverwood or Adrianne Avenicci in Whiterun are your go-to for upgrading your gear or selling off unwanted arms and armor. They often have a good amount of gold, especially for quality items.
- Alchemists: For all your potion and ingredient needs, visit alchemists such as Arcadia in Arcadia's Cauldron in Whiterun or Frida in Mortar and Pestle in Dawnstar. They buy and sell ingredients, potions, and poisons.
- Court Wizards: Found in Jarls' longhouses (e.g., Farengar Secret-Fire in Dragonsreach, Whiterun), these mages deal in spell books, staves, and magical ingredients. They are the primary source for learning new spells.
- Innkeepers: While primarily offering food, drink, and lodging, innkeepers like Delphine at the Sleeping Giant Inn in Riverwood or Hulda at The Bannered Mare in Whiterun also buy and sell a limited selection of general goods.
- Khajiit Caravans: These nomadic merchants, like Ahkari's Caravan or Ri'saad's Caravan, travel between major cities (e.g., Whiterun, Markarth, Solitude, Windhelm, Riften). They often have a larger gold reserve than most static merchants and buy almost anything, making them excellent for offloading large quantities of loot.
Maximizing Your Profits: The Art of Bartering
Your ability to buy low and sell high is directly influenced by your Speech skill and various perks and enchantments.
Speech Skill and Perks
Investing in the Speech skill tree is the most direct way to improve your bartering efficiency. Key perks include:
- Haggling (5 ranks): Increases your buying and selling prices by 10/15/20/25/30%. This is a fundamental perk for any aspiring merchant.
- Allure: Buying and selling prices are 10% better with the opposite sex. Useful if you frequently deal with merchants of a specific gender.
- Merchant: You can sell any type of item to any kind of merchant. This is incredibly useful for offloading diverse loot without needing to visit multiple specialized vendors. For example, you can sell a sword to an alchemist.
- Investor: You can invest 500 gold with a shopkeeper to increase their available gold permanently. Target merchants you frequently use, such as Belethor or Lucan Valerius.
- Fence: You can sell stolen goods to any merchant you have invested in. This is essential for characters who dabble in thievery.
- Master Trader: All merchants gain 1000 gold for bartering. This is a late-game perk but incredibly powerful for selling high-value items.
Enchantments and Potions
Beyond perks, certain items and consumables can temporarily boost your bartering prowess:
- Fortify Barter Enchantments: Look for items with the "Fortify Barter" enchantment. These can be found on necklaces, rings, and circlets. Examples include the Amulet of Zenithar (found during the "Blessings of Nature" quest or randomly) or the Masque of Clavicus Vile (reward for "A Daedra's Best Friend" quest). You can also disenchant these items to learn the enchantment and apply it to your own gear.
- Potions of Bartering: These temporary potions can significantly improve your prices. Keep a few on hand for high-value transactions. Ingredients for crafting include Butterfly Wing, Dragon's Tongue, Hagraven Claw, and Tundra Cotton.
Strategy for Selling Loot
- Equip Bartering Gear: Before initiating a trade, equip any items enchanted with Fortify Barter.
- Consume Potions: If you have a particularly valuable haul, drink a Potion of Bartering.
- Prioritize High-Value Items: Always sell your most expensive items first, especially if the merchant has limited gold.
- Utilize Khajiit Caravans: Due to their higher gold reserves and willingness to buy almost anything, Khajiit caravans are ideal for selling large amounts of varied loot. Track their movements between cities.
- Invest in Merchants: Use the Investor perk on key merchants in cities you frequent to increase their available gold, allowing you to sell more items per visit.
- Wait 48 Hours: Merchant inventories and gold reserves reset every 48 in-game hours. If you've exhausted a merchant's gold, simply wait two full days (using the wait function) and return.
Specific Merchant Locations and Tips
- Riverwood Trader (Riverwood): Lucan Valerius is one of the first general goods merchants you'll encounter. His sister, Camilla Valerius, also works there. He's a good early-game option for selling miscellaneous items.
- Belethor's General Goods (Whiterun): Belethor is a reliable general goods merchant in the heart of Whiterun. He's a prime candidate for the Investor perk.
- Warmaiden's (Whiterun): Adrianne Avenicci and Ulfberth War-Bear run this blacksmith shop. Adrianne is often found outside working the forge, while Ulfberth is inside. Both buy and sell weapons and armor.
- Arcadia's Cauldron (Whiterun): Arcadia is your go-to alchemist in Whiterun for potions and ingredients.
- Fletcher (Solitude): Fihada and Jawanan run this archery shop. They specialize in bows, arrows, and related gear, making them excellent for selling off excess archery equipment.
- Bits and Pieces (Solitude): Sayma is a general goods merchant here, another good option for diverse sales.
- The Drunken Huntsman (Whiterun): Elrindir is an archery merchant and innkeeper. He buys and sells bows and arrows, and also offers general goods.
By understanding merchant types, leveraging your Speech skill, and employing smart bartering strategies, you'll never be short on septims in your adventures across Skyrim.
