Marriages in Skyrim: Companionship and Benefits
Skyrim offers the unique opportunity for the Dragonborn to marry an NPC, providing companionship, unique dialogue, and tangible benefits. Marriage is a simple process that can add a personal touch to your adventures and offer practical advantages, such as a daily bonus to skill progression and a shared home.
To initiate marriage, you must first complete the quest 'The Bonds of Matrimony'. This quest begins by speaking with Maramal, a priest of Mara, in Riften. He will explain the importance of the Amulet of Mara, which you must wear to sify your intent to marry. Once you have the amulet and have spoken to Maramal, you can approach any eligible NPC and propose marriage.
Eligibility for marriage is determined by several factors:
- Race: Most races in Skyrim can be married.
- Gender: Marriage is available between any two genders.
- Quest Status: Some NPCs may be unavailable until certain quests are completed or they are no longer hostile.
- Friendship/Relationship: While not strictly required, having a positive relationship with an NPC can make them more receptive.
Once you have proposed and the NPC accepts, the wedding ceremony will take place the following day at the Temple of Mara in Riften. After the ceremony, your spouse will become available to live with you in one of your homes, and they will offer unique dialogue and interactions.
The benefits of marriage include:
- Companionship: Your spouse can accompany you on your adventures as a follower.
- Daily Bonus: Each day, you can receive the 'Lover's Comfort' bonus, which grants 15% faster skill progression for eight hours. This is activated by sleeping in the same bed as your spouse.
- Shared Home: Your spouse can move into one of your owned homes, providing a sense of stability and a place to store items.
- Merchant Services: Some spouses will open a shop, allowing you to sell goods to them.
- Unique Dialogue: Spouses offer special conversations and comments about your adventures.
To find an eligible spouse, you can speak with Maramal in Riften. He can provide a list of potential candidates. Some popular choices include Aela the Huntress (Companions), Lydia (Housecarl), Farkas (Companions), and Jenassa (a mercenary in Whiterun). Remember to wear the Amulet of Mara when speaking to a potential partner to initiate the dialogue option for marriage.
