Cave 1: Dead Cave & Rebreather
The Dead Cave, often referred to as Cave 1, is typically one of the very first major cave systems you'll explore in The Forest. It serves as a crucial early-game objective, providing you with two indispensable tools: the Map and Compass (as highlighted in our "Finding the First Cave Entrance" section), and the highly sought-after Rebreather. While its layout can initially seem daunting due to numerous branching paths and dead ends, a systematic approach will lead you to these vital items.
Unlike later, more dangerous caves, the Dead Cave primarily features basic cannibal enemies and occasional groups of mutant babies. You generally won't encounter more advanced mutants like Virginias or Armsys in this specific cave, especially not during your initial visit. This makes it a relatively safer environment for early exploration, though vigilance is always recommended.
Navigating the Dead Cave: Your First Steps
Upon entering the Dead Cave, your immediate goal should be to acquire the Map and Compass, which are located relatively close to the entrance. These items are critical for navigating not just this cave, but the entire peninsula.
- Follow the Main Path: From the entrance, stick to the most obvious, well-trodden path. The cave will initially descend.
- Look for Light: Keep an eye out for natural light sources or the faint glow of other survivors' equipment, which often indicates a path forward or an item location.
- Stay Right (Generally): While not a strict rule, often sticking to the right-hand wall when faced with multiple paths can lead you towards the main objectives in this cave.
Key Item Acquisition: Map & Compass
The Map and Compass are usually found together, shortly after you begin your descent into the cave. They are typically located on or near a deceased passenger, often slumped against a rock or wall.
- Location: After a short walk from the entrance, you will come across a small, open area. Scan the ground and nearby rock formations.
- Visual Cue: Look for a body with a distinctive orange backpack or clothing. The Map and Compass will be lying next to or on this individual.
- Action: Approach the body and interact to pick up both items. They will automatically be added to your inventory. The Map will immediately update your current location, and the Compass will appear in your quick-select inventory.
With the Map and Compass in hand, navigation becomes significantly easier. You can now track your position within the cave system and orient yourself towards your next objective: the Rebreather.
Locating the Rebreather
The Rebreather is situated much deeper within the Dead Cave, past several winding passages and a significant water section. This item is absolutely essential for accessing numerous underwater passages and hidden areas in other caves later in the game.
- Continue Deeper: From the Map and Compass location, continue following the main cave path. You'll encounter more cannibals as you go.
- Watch for Water: The cave will eventually lead you to a large, open chamber with a significant pool of water. This is your primary landmark for the Rebreather.
- The Underwater Section: The Rebreather is not immediately visible. It is located at the bottom of this large pool, within an underwater passage.
- Prepare for the Dive: Before diving, ensure you have enough air. While the dive isn't excessively long, having full stamina and health is always a good idea.
- Find the Entrance: Look for a submerged opening or tunnel at the bottom of the pool. It might be slightly obscured by rocks or debris.
- Retrieve the Rebreather: Swim through the underwater passage. The Rebreather will be found on another deceased passenger, often near a small air pocket or at the end of a short tunnel. Interact with the body to collect it.
Important Note: While you can dive to retrieve the Rebreather without it, having a light source (like the lighter or a flashlight) is highly recommended for better visibility in the murky underwater sections.
Enemies and Threats in the Dead Cave
The Dead Cave is generally considered one of the less dangerous caves, but it's not without its threats. Be prepared for:
- Cannibals: You will encounter various types of basic cannibals, including skinny, normal, and painted variants. They often patrol in small groups.
- Mutant Babies: These small, aggressive mutants can be surprisingly dangerous in numbers. They are fast and can overwhelm you if you're not careful.
- Environmental Hazards: Watch out for ledges, slippery surfaces, and deep water. Falling can cause significant damage, and getting lost in the water without the Rebreather can be fatal.
Strategy Tips:
- Stealth: use stealth to avoid unnecessary confrontations, especially if you're low on resources.
- Melee Focus: Early in the game, melee weapons like the Crafted Axe or Plane Axe are your primary means of defense. Aim for headshots.
- Block: Learn to block incoming attacks to mitigate damage.
- Light Source: Always have a light source equipped (lighter, flashlight) to navigate the dark passages and spot enemies.
- Save Regularly: The Dead Cave has several save points (tents or shelters). Use them frequently to avoid losing progress.
Other Notable Finds
Beyond the Map, Compass, and Rebreather, the Dead Cave also contains several useful resources and minor items that can aid your survival:
- Cloth: Often found on bodies or in suitcases. Essential for crafting.
- Rope: Useful for crafting and climbing.
- Food & Drink: Energy bars, sodas, and other consumables are scattered throughout.
- Medicine: Bandages and pain pills can be found, crucial for healing.
- Explosives: Occasionally, you might find dynamite or molotovs, which are excellent for crowd control.
Exiting the Dead Cave
Once you have the Rebreather, you can either retrace your steps back to the main entrance or, in some cases, find an alternative exit that may lead you to a different part of the surface. Always consult your newly acquired map to plan your exit strategy.
The Dead Cave, while challenging for a new survivor, rewards you with fundamental tools that unlock vast new areas of exploration and significantly boost your chances of survival on the peninsula. Master its layout, secure its treasures, and you'll be well on your way to uncovering the mysteries of The Forest.
