Unlike traditional fighting game stories, KOF XIII's narrative branches significantly based on your performance and character choices. Missing a specific interaction or failing to meet certain conditions can lock you out of crucial scenes and even alter the final boss encounter. Pay close attention!

General Tips for Story Mode Progression

Character Selection Matters: The game's story is heavily influenced by your chosen team. While some scenes are generic, many are exclusive to specific character combinations. To see everything, you'll need to play through Story Mode multiple times with different teams.
Performance-Based Triggers: Certain scenes, particularly those involving the "Awakened" versions of characters or specific boss encounters, are triggered by achieving a high rank (e.g., 'S' or 'A') on previous matches, or by finishing opponents with specific moves (e.g., a Super Desperation Move or Neo Max).
Don't Skip Dialogue: While tempting, skipping dialogue can cause you to miss subtle cues or even direct instructions that might lead to a hidden scene. Always read through the conversations.
Save Your Progress (Console Versions): If playing on a console port (PS3, Xbox 360), utilize the save feature frequently, especially before critical matches. This allows you to reload and retry if you miss a condition for a specific scene. Arcade be more precise!

Key Scene Triggers & Walkthroughs

Scene 1: The Invitation

Trigger: This is the introductory scene for all teams. No special conditions required.
Location: Automatically plays after selecting Story Mode and your team.

Scene 2: Ash's Schemes (Early Encounter)

Trigger: To unlock an early, brief encounter with Ash Crimson, you must achieve at least an 'A' rank on your first three matches.
Location: After your third match, before the fourth.
Strategy: Focus on perfects, high combo counts, and finishing with Desperation Moves or Neo Maxes to boost your score. Characters with easy-to-land Neo Maxes (e.g., Kyo Kusanagi, Iori Yagami) can be helpful here.

Scene 3: Saiki's First Appearance

Trigger: This scene is tied to your overall performance leading up to the penultimate boss. If your team has consistently achieved 'A' or 'S' ranks throughout the tournament, Saiki will appear in his human form before the final boss.
Location: Before the final boss fight against Dark Ash.
Strategy: Maintain high performance across all matches. Don't just win; dominate. Utilize Hyper Drive cancels and Neo Maxes for maximum damage and style points.

Scene 4: Dark Ash Confrontation (True Ending Path)

Trigger: To face Dark Ash as the true final boss and unlock the best ending for your team, you MUST have triggered Saiki's first appearance (Scene 3) and then defeat Saiki (in his transformed state) with a Super Desperation Move or Neo Max.
Location: The final boss fight.
Strategy:
1. Ensure you've met the conditions for Scene 3.
2. During the fight against Saiki (transformed), save at least one stock of your Power Gauge.
3. Once Saiki's health is low, finish him with a Super Desperation Move (e.g., Kyo's Ura 108 Shiki: Orochinagi) or a Neo Max (e.g., Iori's Ya Otome).
4. If successful, the story will proceed to the Dark Ash confrontation. If not, you'll face a different, less impactful final boss and a standard ending.

Scene 5: Specific Team Interactions

Many teams have unique scenes that play out at various points in the story. Here are a few notable examples:

Japan Team (Kyo, Benimaru, Goro): Look for unique dialogue and interactions after defeating the Ikari Warriors Team. Kyo's rivalry with Iori also triggers specific exchanges if they are on opposing teams.
Yagami Team (Iori, Mature, Vice): Their scenes often delve deeper into the Orochi curse and their motivations. Pay attention to their interactions with Ash, particularly after the mid-boss fights.
Elisabeth Team (Elisabeth, Duo Lon, Shen Woo): Their storyline is central to understanding Ash's actions. Expect unique scenes before and after encounters with Ash, especially if you manage to trigger the Dark Ash path.
