Weapons & Upgrades

Mastering your arsenal is key to conquering both Hyrule and Lorule. This section details every weapon and item Link can acquire, along with crucial upgrade paths to maximize your combat effectiveness and exploration capabilities. Discover where to find them and how to enhance their power.

Key areas covered include the Master Sword's enhancements, the utility of Ravio's shop for item acquisition and upgrades via Great Fairy Fountains, and other essential tools like shields and bottles.

The Master Sword

The legendary blade of evil's bane, the Master Sword, is your primary weapon. While powerful from the start, it can be significantly enhanced through the use of Master Ore.

  • Acquisition: Obtained after completing the first three dungeons in Hyrule (Eastern Palace, House of Gales, Tower of Hera) and then retrieving it from the treacherous Lost Woods.
  • Master Sword Lv. 2
    • Requirement: Collect 2 Master Ore pieces.
    • Location: Master Ore can be found scattered throughout both Hyrule and Lorule, often in chests after defeating mini-bosses, solving puzzles, or in hidden areas.
    • Process: Visit the Blacksmith in Hyrule with 2 Master Ore pieces. He will forge your Master Sword into a more powerful version, increasing its attack power.
  • Master Sword Lv. 3 (Tempered Master Sword)
    • Requirement: Collect 2 additional Master Ore pieces (for a total of 4).
    • Location: Continue your search for Master Ore in later dungeons and more challenging areas of Lorule.
    • Process: Return to the Blacksmith with your 4 total Master Ore pieces. He will temper the blade further, making it the strongest weapon in the game.

Rental & Purchased Items

Most of your essential tools are acquired through Ravio's Shop. Initially, items are rented, but purchasing them permanently grants you access to their upgraded forms via the Great Fairy Fountains.

  • Ravio's Shop: Located in Link's House in Hyrule. Ravio will rent you almost every item you need for a small fee. Renting allows you to try out items and progress through dungeons without a massive upfront cost.
  • Purchasing Items: After renting an item, you'll have the option to purchase it permanently from Ravio. This is highly recommended as soon as you can afford it, as purchased items can be upgraded.

Item Upgrades (Great Fairy Fountains)

Once an item is purchased from Ravio, it can be upgraded at one of the Great Fairy Fountains. There are three Great Fairy Fountains in total, each capable of upgrading a specific set of items. Finding all three is crucial for maximizing your potential.

  • Great Fairy Fountain 1 (Hyrule):
    • Location: Northeast of Link's House, hidden behind a cracked wall requiring the Bomb to access.
    • Upgrades:
      • Bow: Increases the number of arrows fired per shot (from 1 to 3).
      • Bombs: Increases the blast radius and damage.
      • Hookshot: Increases the range and speed.
      • Master Sword: Fully upgrades the Master Sword to its final form (requires Master Ore, see above).
  • Great Fairy Fountain 2 (Lorule):
    • Location: In the southwest region of Lorule, near the Swamp Palace. Navigate a small maze of platforms and use the Hookshot.
    • Upgrades:
      • Hammer: Increases damage and the area of effect.
      • Fire Rod: Increases the size and duration of the flame pillar.
      • Ice Rod: Increases the size and duration of the ice block.
  • Great Fairy Fountain 3 (Lorule):
    • Location: In the northeast region of Lorule, near the Dark Palace. This fountain is often guarded by tougher enemies.
