Before Dungeons
Before you dive headfirst into the challenges of Hyrule's dungeons, a little preparation goes a long way. This section will guide you through essential steps to ensure Link is well-equipped, powered up, and ready to face whatever dangers lie ahead. Taking these steps will make your dungeon runs smoother and increase your chances of success.
1. Heart Container & Stamina Vessel Hunting
Prioritizing your health and stamina is crucial. More hearts mean you can take more hits, and an extended stamina gauge allows for longer merging, more dodges, and sustained item use. Always keep an eye out for these vital upgrades.
- Heart Pieces: These are scattered throughout Hyrule and Lorule. Collecting four Heart Pieces will grant you one additional Heart Container. Many are found in chests after solving puzzles, completing mini-games, or exploring hidden areas. Consult a dedicated Heart Piece guide if you're struggling to find them all.
- Maiamai: These adorable creatures are essential for upgrading your rented items into permanent, more powerful versions. There are 100 Maiamai hidden across both worlds. For every ten Maiamai you return to Mother Maiamai in her cave (located near Link's House in Hyrule), she will upgrade one of your rented items. Prioritize upgrading items you use frequently or those required for upcoming dungeons.
- Stamina Vessels: Unlike previous Zelda titles, stamina is key to your merging ability. While there are no separate "Stamina Vessels" to collect in the traditional sense, your stamina gauge naturally extends as you progress through the main story and defeat bosses. However, finding Maiamai and upgrading certain items can indirectly improve your efficiency, reducing stamina consumption.
2. Item Acquisition & Upgrades
Renting items from Ravio's Shop is a core mechanic of A Link Between Worlds. Don't be shy about trying out different tools!
- Ravio's Shop: Located in Link's House, Ravio offers a wide array of essential items for rent. These include the Bow, Boomerang, Hookshot, Bombs, Lamp, and more. Renting an item costs a small rupee fee, but allows you to use it indefinitely until you fall in battle. If you fall, you'll lose all rented items and must re-rent them.
- Purchasing Items: After you've cleared certain dungeons or progressed far enough in the story, Ravio will begin to offer items for permanent purchase. These purchased items are yours forever, even if you fall in battle. They are often more expensive than renting, but provide peace of mind. Prioritize purchasing items that are integral to your combat style or puzzle-solving.
- Maiamai Upgrades: As mentioned, returning Maiamai to Mother Maiamai allows you to upgrade one rented item into a permanent, more powerful version. For example, the Bow upgrade allows you to fire three arrows at once, and the Bombs upgrade makes them explode with a wider radius. These upgrades are invaluable for both combat and exploration.
3. Rupee Management
Rupees are your lifeline in Hyrule and Lorule. You'll need them for renting and purchasing items, buying potions, and participating in mini-games.
- Farming Rupees:
- Grass Cutting: A classic method. Simply cut grass, bushes, and pots to find rupees.
- Enemy Drops: Many enemies drop rupees upon defeat.
- Mini-games: The Cucco Ranch mini-game (located in Kakariko Village) and the Octoball Derby (in Lorule) are excellent ways to earn large sums of rupees once you get the hang of them.
- Chests: Always open any chests you find, as they often contain significant rupee amounts.
- Hidden Grottos: Keep an eye out for suspicious cracks in walls or areas where you can use Bombs to reveal hidden caves with rupee stashes.
- Spending Wisely: Initially, focus on renting items that will help you progress. Once you have a steady income, start saving for permanent item purchases and essential upgrades. keep a few hundred rupees on hand for unexpected potion needs or re-renting items if you happen to fall.
4. Potion Stockpile
Never underestimate the power of a good potion! They can turn the tide of a difficult battle or save you from a frustrating trip back to a save point.
- Purchasing Potions: The Witch's House, located east of Link's House, is your primary source for potions.
- Red Potion: Restores 8 hearts. A must-have for any dungeon delve.
- Blue Potion: Restores all hearts. More expensive, but invaluable for boss fights.
- Purple Potion: Restores your magic gauge. Useful if you rely heavily on magic-consuming items.
- Yellow Potion: Makes you temporarily invincible. Extremely useful for tricky sections or powerful enemies.
- Empty Bottles: You'll want to find as many Empty Bottles as possible to carry several potions.
- Bottle 1: Given to you by the Witch after delivering a Monster Tail.
- Bottle 2: Found in a chest in the Hyrule Castle sewers after completing a short puzzle.
- Bottle 3: Purchased from the Street Merchant in Kakariko Village for 100 rupees.
- Bottle 4: Obtained by completing the Death Mountain Trail mini-game (requires the Hookshot).
5. Exploration & Side Quests
Don't rush straight to the next dungeon. Exploring the overworld of Hyrule and Lorule can yield significant rewards.
- Hidden Caves & Secrets: Use your Bombs on suspicious walls, lift rocks with the Power Glove, and explore every nook and cranny. You'll often find rupees, Maiamai, or even Heart Pieces.
- Mini-games: Engage in the various mini-games scattered across both worlds. They offer fun distractions and often provide valuable rewards like rupees, Heart Pieces, or even Empty Bottles.
- Characters & Lore: Talk to the NPCs! They often provide hints, offer side quests, or simply add to the rich lore of the game. Some side quests might lead to unique items or upgrades.
