Collectible Items
Beyond the essential dungeon items and rental gear, A Link Between Worlds is packed with several collectible items that enhance Link's abilities, unlock secrets, and provide valuable resources. Mastering their locations and acquisition methods is key to a 100% completion run and making Link an unstoppable hero!
Heart Pieces
Heart Pieces are arguably the most crucial collectible, as every four you find will grant Link an additional Heart Container, increasing his maximum health. There are 28 Heart Pieces scattered across Hyrule and Lorule, meaning you can gain 7 full Heart Containers from them alone. Keep an eye out for suspicious areas, solve environmental puzzles, and explore every nook and cranny.
- Kakariko Village Well: Head to the well in the center of Kakariko Village. Pay the man 10 Rupees to enter. Inside, use the Lamp to light the torches and reveal a hidden path leading to a chest containing a Heart Piece.
- Eastern Palace Courtyard: After completing the Eastern Palace, return to the courtyard. Look for a cracked wall on the eastern side. Use a Bomb to blow it open and reveal a secret room with a chest.
- Hyrule Castle Secret Passage: Once you gain access to the secret passage behind Hyrule Castle (after rescuing Princess Zelda), explore the area thoroughly. There's a hidden alcove accessible by merging onto a wall that holds a Heart Piece.
- Death Mountain Trail (Hyrule): On the path leading up Death Mountain, look for a series of moving platforms. Navigate them carefully to reach a secluded ledge with a chest.
- Zora's Domain (Hyrule): In Zora's Domain, use the Zora's Flippers to swim to the waterfall in the northern part of the area. Swim behind it to find a hidden cave.
- Swamp Palace (Lorule): Inside the Swamp Palace, after draining the water in one of the central rooms, a Heart Piece will become accessible on a lower platform.
- Turtle Rock (Lorule): During your exploration of Turtle Rock, you'll encounter a room with several unlit torches. Light them all with the Lamp or Fire Rod to make a chest appear.
Maiamai
The 100 lost Maiamai are perhaps the most extensive collectible quest in the game. These adorable creatures are scattered throughout Hyrule and Lorule, often hidden in plain sight, behind obstacles, or requiring specific items to reach. Each Maiamai you return to Mother Maiamai (located in a cave north of Link's House) will allow her to upgrade one of your rental items, transforming them into permanent, more powerful versions. Collecting all 100 will earn you a special reward.
- Link's House (Hyrule): Check behind Link's house; one Maiamai is often hiding there from the very beginning.
- Sanctuary (Hyrule): After the initial events at the Sanctuary, revisit the area. One Maiamai is typically hidden within the bushes or behind a pillar.
- Hyrule Castle Town (Hyrule): Look for a Maiamai on the roof of one of the buildings in the northern part of Castle Town. You'll need to merge onto a wall to reach it.
- Eastern Palace Grounds (Hyrule): Near the entrance to the Eastern Palace, there's a small pond. Use the Zora's Flippers to dive and find a Maiamai at the bottom.
- Desert Palace (Lorule): Within the Desert Palace, after activating certain switches, a Maiamai may become accessible in a previously unreachable area.
- Ice Ruins (Lorule): In the Ice Ruins, look for a Maiamai frozen within a block of ice. You'll need the Fire Rod to melt it.
- Thieves' Hideout (Lorule): Inside the Thieves' Hideout, a Maiamai can be found in one of the cells, requiring you to navigate through the dungeon to open it.
- Skull Woods (Lorule): Explore the various hollow logs and secret passages in Skull Woods; Maiamai are often tucked away in these dark corners.
Bottles
Bottles are invaluable for carrying potions, fairies, or other consumable items that can turn the tide of battle. There are five Bottles to find in total, significantly expanding your inventory options.
- Bottle 1 (Kakariko Village Merchant): The easiest Bottle to acquire. Purchase it from the merchant in Kakariko Village for 100 Rupees.
- Bottle 2 (Death Mountain Cave - Hyrule): In a cave on Death Mountain (accessible after obtaining the Power Glove), you'll find a man who asks you to retrieve a special mushroom. Complete his request to receive a Bottle.
- Bottle 3 (Lost Woods - Hyrule): Deep within the Lost Woods, there's a hidden area accessible by following a specific path (listen for the rustling leaves). A chest containing a Bottle awaits you there.
- Bottle 4 (Swamp Palace - Lorule): After completing the Swamp Palace, return to the entrance. A hidden path or puzzle solution within the initial rooms will lead you to a Bottle.
- Bottle 5 (StreetPass Reward): This Bottle is obtained by fulfilling a specific StreetPass requirement. You'll need to StreetPass with another player who has played A Link Between Worlds. Once you have enough StreetPass tags, visit the StreetPass Battle Arena in Kakariko Village to claim your prize.
Master Ore
Master Ore is a rare and powerful material used to upgrade your Master Sword at the Blacksmith in Hyrule. Each upgrade increases the sword's attack power, making Link a more formidable fighter. There are four pieces of Master Ore in total, allowing you to fully power up the Master Sword.
- Master Ore 1 (Desert Palace - Lorule): Found in a chest within the Desert Palace. You'll likely need to solve a light-based puzzle to access it.
- Master Ore 2 (Ice Ruins - Lorule): Located in the Ice Ruins. This piece often requires careful navigation over slippery surfaces and potentially using the Hookshot to reach.
- Master Ore 3 (Turtle Rock - Lorule): Within Turtle Rock, this Master Ore is usually hidden behind a cracked wall or a block that needs to be moved using the Titan's Mitt.
- Master Ore 4 (Dark Palace - Lorule): The final piece of Master Ore is found in the Dark Palace. It's often in a well-guarded chest or requires a complex puzzle solution involving the Lamp.
Stamina Scrolls
Stamina Scrolls are a rare find that permanently increase Link's Stamina Gauge, allowing him to use his merged form and rental items for longer periods. There are only a few of these in the game, so seek them out.
- Stamina Scroll 1 (Hyrule Castle Courtyard): After obtaining the Hammer, return to the Hyrule Castle Courtyard. Look for a switch embedded in the ground that can only be activated by the Hammer. This will reveal a secret passage leading to a chest.
- Stamina Scroll 2 (Death Mountain Summit - Lorule): On the summit of Death Mountain in Lorule, you'll find a hidden cave entrance. Inside, navigate a short puzzle to reach the chest.
