The Magic Hag (Kilton)

Deep within the wilds of Hyrule, a peculiar merchant named Kilton operates a traveling monster-themed shop known as the Fang and Bone. This enigmatic individual, often referred to by the locals as "The Magic Hag" due to his unusual appearance and nocturnal habits, offers unique monster-themed gear and items not found anywhere else in Hyrule. Tracking him down and understanding his unique currency system is key to acquiring some of the game's most distinctive apparel and resources.

Locating Kilton

Kilton is a nocturnal merchant, meaning he only appears at night (9 PM to 5 AM). His initial location is fixed, but once you've met him, he will then move to a new location near each of Hyrule's major settlements, always setting up shop near a body of water, often on the outskirts or in a secluded spot. He will always be visible from a distance due to his distinctive hot air balloon-like shop.

  1. First Encounter: Skull Lake (Akkala Region)
    • Your first encounter with Kilton must take place at Skull Lake in the Akkala region. This distinct landmark is easily identifiable on the map.
    • Travel to the Zuna Kai Shrine, which is located in the left "eye" of Skull Lake.
    • From the shrine, glide or walk to the right "eye" of the skull. Kilton's shop will be set up on the small island in the middle of this "eye" once night falls.
    • Speak to him to initiate his questline and unlock his services.
  2. Subsequent Locations: Near Major Settlements

After your initial meeting, Kilton will appear at night near the following locations. Remember to look for his distinctive purple and green hot air balloon!

    • Kakariko Village: Often found on the path leading to the Great Fairy Fountain, near the small pond.
    • Hateno Village: Typically located on the small island in the pond just outside the village entrance.
    • Lurelin Village: Look for him on the beach or the small island just off the coast.
    • Gerudo Town: Outside the main entrance, usually near the oasis pond.
    • Rito Village: On the small island in the center of Lake Totori, below the village.
    • Goron City: Near the small pond on the path leading up to the city.
    • Tarrey Town: On the small island in the center of Lake Akkala, just south of the town.

Kilton's Currency: Mon

Kilton does not accept Rupees. Instead, he trades in a unique currency called Mon. You can only acquire Mon by selling him monster parts. The more valuable the monster part, the more Mon you will receive. This encourages players to actively hunt and collect monster drops.

  • Selling Monster Parts: Approach Kilton and select the "I want to sell monster parts" option. He will display a list of your monster parts and their corresponding Mon values.
  • Mon Values (Examples):
    • Bokoblin Horn: 3 Mon
    • Moblin Fang: 5 Mon
    • Lizalfos Tail: 10 Mon
    • Hinox Toenail: 20 Mon
    • Lynel Horn: 40 Mon
    • Giant Ancient Core: 100 Mon (one of the highest value items)

What to Buy from Kilton

Kilton's inventory is unique and expands as you defeat more Divine Beasts. His primary offerings are monster masks, which allow Link to blend in with certain monster types, and the powerful Dark Link Set.

Key Items and Their Benefits:

  • Monster Masks:
    • Bokoblin Mask (99 Mon): Equipping this mask makes Bokoblins less likely to attack you immediately. They may even dance with you!
    • Moblin Mask (199 Mon): Similar to the Bokoblin Mask, this makes Moblins less hostile.
    • Lizalfos Mask (299 Mon): Grants Link temporary immunity from Lizalfos attacks.
    • Hinox Mask (399 Mon): Allows Link to approach Hinox without immediately being detected.
    • Lynel Mask (999 Mon): This is the most expensive and arguably most useful mask. It allows Link to get very close to Lynels before they become aggressive, providing an excellent opportunity for a surprise attack or to gather resources.
  • Dark Link Set: This iconic armor set is purely cosmetic and offers no defensive bonuses, but it looks incredibly cool and increases your night speed. Each piece becomes available after defeating a certain number of Divine Beasts.
    • Dark Tunic (999 Mon): Available after defeating one Divine Beast.
    • Dark Trousers (999 Mon): Available after defeating two Divine Beasts.
    • Dark Hood (999 Mon): Available after defeating all four Divine Beasts.
  • Monster Bridle (399 Mon) & Monster Saddle (299 Mon): These unique horse gear items are purely cosmetic but give your horse a distinct, monstrous appearance. They become available after defeating two Divine Beasts.
  • Spring-Loaded Hammer (199 Mon): A novelty weapon that deals no damage but sends enemies flying. Great for comedic effect or knocking enemies off cliffs.
  • Evil Spirit Armor Set (999 Mon per piece): This set is only available after completing all 120 Shrines. It mimics the appearance of Phantom Ganon and offers a disguise bonus against Stal enemies, as well as an attack boost.

Strategy Tips for Trading with Kilton

  • Hoard Monster Parts: Don't sell all your monster parts to regular merchants for Rupees. Keep a good stock of them specifically for trading with Kilton. High-value parts like Lynel Guts, Hinox Guts, and Ancient Cores are excellent for quickly accumulating Mon.
  • Night Travel: Plan your travel routes to pass by Kilton's known locations at night. If you're near a stable or shrine, you can always wait until nightfall.
  • Teleportation: Once you've visited a location and know where Kilton appears, you can fast travel to a nearby shrine or tower and then make your way to him.
  • Prioritize Masks: The monster masks are incredibly useful for stealth and resource gathering, especially the Lynel Mask if you plan on farming Lynels.
  • Dark Link for Style: If you're a completionist or just love the aesthetic, start saving Mon for the Dark Link set as soon as you begin defeating Divine Beasts.
