Defenses: Boots
While often overlooked, your choice of footwear in Breath of the Wild can significantly impact your survival and traversal across Hyrule's diverse landscapes. Beyond mere aesthetics, boots provide crucial environmental resistances, movement buffs, and even defensive capabilities. Equipping the right pair can mean the difference between a brisk journey and a frustrating, health-draining ordeal.
Environmental Protection Boots
These specialized boots are essential for navigating extreme climates without taking constant damage or suffering from movement penalties. Prioritize obtaining these early in your adventure, especially if you plan to explore regions like the Hebra Mountains or Death Mountain.
- Snow Boots:
- Effect: Prevents damage from freezing temperatures and allows for normal movement speed in deep snow. Without these, Link will shiver, lose health, and move agonizingly slow through snowy areas.
- Location: These are obtained as a reward from the "The Test of Will" side quest. You'll find this quest at the Gerudo Canyon Stable, given by a Gerudo named Bozai. He challenges Link to a race across the Gerudo Desert in the heat of the day. You'll need to wear the complete Gerudo Vai Set (Gerudo Veil, Gerudo Top, Gerudo Sirwal) to even speak to him about the challenge. After completing the race, he will give you the Snow Boots.
- Strategy: While the quest requires the Gerudo Vai Set, you can actually equip the Snow Boots immediately after receiving them to make subsequent cold-weather exploration much easier.
- Sand Boots:
- Effect: Prevents movement penalties in deep sand, allowing Link to run at normal speed across the Gerudo Desert. Without them, Link will sink and move very slowly, making desert travel a chore.
- Location: Also obtained from Bozai at the Gerudo Canyon Stable, but only after you've completed "The Test of Will" and received the Snow Boots. Speak to him again, and he will offer a second race challenge, this time across the desert. Complete this race to earn the Sand Boots.
- Strategy: These are invaluable for exploring the vast Gerudo Desert, particularly when tracking down shrines or completing quests that require extensive travel through the sandy wastes.
- Flamebreaker Boots:
- Effect: Provides heat resistance, preventing Link from catching fire and taking damage in volcanic regions like Death Mountain. While not as critical as the full Flamebreaker Set for preventing immediate combustion, they contribute to overall heat resistance.
- Location: Can be purchased from the Armor Shop in Goron City. The full Flamebreaker Set (Helm, Armor, Boots) is highly recommended for exploring Death Mountain.
- Strategy: Combine these with other pieces of the Flamebreaker Set or consume heat-resistant elixirs/food to achieve sufficient fireproof protection for the hottest areas.
Movement & Utility Boots
These boots enhance Link's mobility and provide useful traversal benefits, making exploration more efficient and sometimes safer.
- Climber's Boots:
- Effect: Increases climbing speed. This is a game-changer for scaling mountains and cliffs, especially when combined with the full Climber's Set.
- Location: Found in a treasure chest within the Ree Dahee Shrine, located in the Dueling Peaks region. The shrine itself is quite straightforward, often serving as an early-game introduction to climbing mechanics.
- Strategy: Upgrade these at a Great Fairy Fountain to further boost their effect. The increased climbing speed significantly reduces the stamina cost of scaling vertical surfaces.
- Stealth Tights (Boots):
- Effect: Increases stealth, making Link harder for enemies to detect. Essential for sneaking past foes, hunting animals, or gathering insects.
- Location: Can be purchased from the Armor Shop in Kakariko Village. The full Stealth Set (Mask, Tights, Chest Guard) provides a significant stealth bonus.
- Strategy: Combine with the rest of the Stealth Set and consume stealth-boosting food for maximum effect. This is invaluable for early-game resource gathering and avoiding tough encounters.
- Rubber Tights (Boots):
- Effect: Provides shock resistance, reducing damage from electrical attacks and preventing Link from dropping his metallic weapons during lightning storms.
- Location: Found in a treasure chest within the Toh Yahsa Shrine, located in the Lanayru Wetlands. This shrine involves a puzzle with water and electricity.
- Strategy: Crucial for navigating regions with frequent lightning, like the Lanayru Wetlands or during thunderstorms. The full Rubber Set makes Link immune to lightning strikes.
Defensive & Combat Boots
While boots primarily focus on utility, some offer direct defensive benefits that can be upgraded to provide substantial protection.
- Soldier's Greaves:
- Effect: Offers a good base defense rating, making them a solid choice for general combat.
- Location: Can be purchased from the Armor Shop in Hateno Village.
- Strategy: These are a reliable early-to-mid game defensive option. Upgrade them at a Great Fairy Fountain to significantly boost their defense.
- Ancient Greaves:
- Effect: Provides high defense and, when worn with other Ancient Armor pieces, offers a set bonus that increases the attack power of Ancient Weapons.
- Location: Can be purchased from the Akkala Ancient Tech Lab after providing Cherry with Ancient Materials (Ancient Gears, Ancient Shafts, Ancient Cores, etc.).
- Strategy: These are among the best defensive boots in the game, especially when fully upgraded. The set bonus makes them ideal for players who frequently use Ancient Arrows, Ancient Blades, or the Master Sword against Guardians.
- Knight's Greaves:
- Effect: Offers excellent defense, comparable to the Soldier's Greaves but with a slightly higher base defense.
- Location: Can be purchased from the Armor Shop in Hateno Village after completing a certain amount of the main story, or found in various treasure chests throughout Hyrule Castle.
- Strategy: A strong choice for players seeking high defense without relying on the Ancient Set's specific weapon bonus.
Remember to regularly visit Great Fairy Fountains to upgrade your chosen boots. Upgrades not only increase their defense rating but can also enhance their special effects, making Link an even more formidable and adaptable adventurer.
