Defenses: Jewelry
While often overlooked, jewelry in Breath of the Wild offers unique defensive properties that can be crucial for survival in specific environments. Unlike traditional armor, these items typically provide elemental resistance rather than raw defense points. Understanding when and how to utilize them can save you from harsh environmental damage or even powerful elemental attacks from enemies.
Acquiring Jewelry
Most jewelry items are crafted by the Gerudo jeweler, Isha, in Gerudo Town. To unlock her services, you must first complete the side quest "Tools of the Trade."
- Initiate "Tools of the Trade": Speak to Isha in Gerudo Town. She'll lament her inability to craft due to a lack of specific gems.
- Gather Required Gems: Isha will request a specific gem for her first crafting project. This is usually a Diamond.
- Return to Isha: Once you provide the requested gem, she will craft an item for you and open her shop for business, allowing you to commission other jewelry pieces.
Each piece of jewelry requires a specific type and quantity of precious gems, along with a certain amount of Rupees. Therefore, regular mining expeditions and selling surplus materials are essential to afford these valuable accessories.
Types of Defensive Jewelry & Strategies
Here's a breakdown of the defensive jewelry available and how best to employ them:
-
Ruby Circlet
- Effect: Heat Resistance (Level 1)
- Crafting Cost: 3 Rubies, 500 Rupees
- Location: Gerudo Town (Isha)
- Strategy: The Ruby Circlet is indispensable for exploring hot regions like the Gerudo Desert during the day or the lower slopes of Death Mountain. While it only provides Level 1 Heat Resistance, it can be combined with other heat-resistant armor pieces (like the Gerudo Veil/Top/Trousers) or heat-resistant elixirs/food to achieve Level 2 Heat Resistance, allowing safe passage through even the hottest areas. It's a lightweight alternative to carrying full heat-resistant armor sets if you only need a minor boost.
-
Sapphire Circlet
- Effect: Cold Resistance (Level 1)
- Crafting Cost: 3 Sapphires, 500 Rupees
- Location: Gerudo Town (Isha)
- Strategy: Essential for traversing cold environments such as the Hebra Mountains, Mount Lanayru, or the Great Hyrule Forest. Similar to the Ruby Circlet, its Level 1 Cold Resistance can be stacked with other cold-resistant gear (like the Snowquill Tunic/Trousers or Warm Doublet) or cold-resistant meals/elixirs to reach Level 2, which is necessary for surviving the coldest peaks. This is a good option if you prefer to mix and match armor or need a quick cold resistance solution without changing your entire outfit.
-
Topaz Earrings
- Effect: Shock Resistance (Level 1)
- Crafting Cost: 10 Topaz, 500 Rupees
- Location: Gerudo Town (Isha)
- Strategy: These earrings are invaluable when facing electric-based enemies like Electric Wizzrobes, Electric Chuchus, or Electric Lizalfos. They also provide protection against environmental hazards like lightning strikes during thunderstorms. While Level 1 Shock Resistance won't make you immune, it significantly reduces the damage taken and prevents you from dropping your metallic weapons. Combine with the Rubber Armor set for full immunity, or use them as a standalone defense against weaker electric attacks.
-
Diamond Circlet
- Effect: Guardian Resist (Level 1)
- Crafting Cost: 3 Diamonds, 1000 Rupees
- Location: Gerudo Town (Isha)
- Strategy: The Diamond Circlet is a late-game gem, offering a flat reduction in damage taken from Guardian attacks. This is incredibly useful when raiding Hyrule Castle, exploring the Akkala Citadel Ruins, or farming Guardian Stalkers. While it doesn't offer as much protection as the full Ancient Armor set, it's a solid headpiece that can be combined with other armor for a balanced defense. It's particularly effective when you need to free up other armor slots for different set bonuses but still want some Guardian protection.
General Tips for Jewelry Use
- Stacking Effects: Remember that elemental resistance from jewelry stacks with other armor pieces and temporary buffs from food/elixirs. Always aim for Level 2 resistance in extreme environments.
- Cost vs. Benefit: Gems are valuable. Consider if the defensive benefit of a jewelry piece outweighs the potential to sell the gems for Rupees or use them for armor upgrades. Early in the game, selling gems might be more beneficial for acquiring essential gear.
- Quick Swaps: Utilize the quick menu to swap jewelry pieces on the fly. If you're entering a cold region, quickly equip your Sapphire Circlet. If a thunderstorm rolls in, switch to your Topaz Earrings.
- Fashion Over Function: While jewelry offers defensive properties, it also allows for more aesthetic customization compared to full armor sets. Don't be afraid to mix and match for style, especially if you've mastered combat and environmental navigation.
