The Hyrule Compendium is an in-game encyclopedia accessed via your Sheikah Slate's camera rune. Take pictures of every creature, monster, material, weapon, and treasure chest you encounter to fill it. Once an item is in your Compendium, you can use the Sensor+ upgrade (obtained from Purah in Hateno Tech Lab) to track it, making it easier to find specific items for quests or upgrades.
