Towers and Shrines
Towers and Shrines are the cornerstones of exploration and progression in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Towers act as vantage points, revealing the map of surrounding regions, while Shrines offer bite-sized puzzle or combat challenges that reward Link with Spirit Orbs, essential for increasing his health and stamina.
These ancient Sheikah structures are scattered across Hyrule, serving as vital landmarks and progression markers. Activating a Tower not only fills in your map but also provides a convenient launching point for gliding to explore the area below. Shrines, on the other hand, are mini-dungeons that test your mastery of the game's mechanics.
Sheikah Towers
Activating a Sheikah Tower is usually one of the first objectives in a new region. Upon reaching the top of a Tower and interacting with the terminal, the following occurs:
- Map Revelation: The map for that region is fully revealed on your Sheikah Slate, showing terrain, landmarks, and points of interest.
- Fast Travel Point: The Tower becomes a permanent fast travel location, allowing you to instantly warp back to it from anywhere in Hyrule.
- Gliding Launch Point: The top of the Tower serves as an excellent vantage point for gliding to explore the surrounding areas, especially those that are difficult to reach by foot.
There are 15 Sheikah Towers in total, spread across Hyrule's various regions. Finding and activating them all is crucial for complete map coverage.
Sheikah Shrines
Shrines are smaller, self-contained challenges that dot the landscape of Hyrule. Each Shrine contains a puzzle, a combat trial, or a combination of both. Successfully completing a Shrine rewards Link with a Spirit Orb.
Types of Shrines
- Puzzle Shrines: These focus on environmental puzzles, often requiring the use of Link's Sheikah Slate runes (Magnesis, Stasis, Cryonis, Bombs) or clever manipulation of objects.
- Combat Shrines: These present Link with a series of enemies to defeat, testing his combat prowess and weapon management.
- Test of Strength Shrines: A specific type of combat shrine where Link faces a powerful Guardian Scout. These are categorized by difficulty (Minor, Moderate, Major).
- Blessing Shrines: These Shrines contain no puzzles or combat. Upon entering, Link is immediately rewarded with a chest containing a valuable item (often a weapon or shield) and a Spirit Orb.
Using Spirit Orbs
Once you have collected four Spirit Orbs, you can exchange them at any Goddess Statue (found in towns and at the Temple of Time) for either:
- A Heart Container: Increases Link's maximum health.
- A Stamina Vessel: Increases Link's maximum stamina.
Choosing between health and stamina is a key strategic decision that influences your playstyle. Prioritizing stamina allows for more exploration and combat maneuvers, while prioritizing health increases your survivability.
Finding Shrines
Shrines are often indicated by a glowing orange pillar of light when you are nearby. They can be found:
- In plain sight, often near Towers or villages.
- Hidden behind breakable walls or in caves.
- As rewards for completing Shrine Quests, which are often given by NPCs.
- Discovered through exploration and observation.
Towers and Shrines are integral to your progression and exploration in Breath of the Wild. Activating all Towers and completing as many Shrines as possible will greatly enhance your ability to explore Hyrule and prepare for the challenges ahead.
