While not as prevalent as swords or spears, Boomerangs offer a unique and often overlooked combat style in Breath of the Wild. Their primary advantage lies in their ability to be thrown and retrieved, conserving weapon durability and offering a ranged attack option without consuming arrows. Mastering the boomerang can add a versatile tool to Link's arsenal, especially against multiple weaker foes or for triggering distant environmental puzzles.

Understanding Boomerang Mechanics

Boomerangs function differently from other thrown weapons. When thrown, they will travel a certain distance, hit enemies or objects, and then return to Link. If Link moves too far from the boomerang's return path, or if it hits an obstacle that prevents its return, it will drop to the ground and must be manually picked up. Catching a returning boomerang requires precise timing; press the 'A' button when the boomerang is close to Link to seamlessly retrieve it. Missing the catch will cause it to clatter to the ground, requiring you to pick it up.

• Durability Conservation: The primary benefit of boomerangs is that they do not lose durability when caught. They only take durability damage if they hit an enemy or object and are NOT caught on the return. This makes them excellent for clearing out groups of low-health enemies without burning through your more powerful weapons.
• Multi-Target Potential: A single thrown boomerang can hit multiple enemies in its path, making it effective for crowd control.
• Environmental Interaction: Boomerangs can be used to activate distant switches, cut down distant beehives, or even knock fruit from trees.

Notable Boomerangs and Where to Find Them

While most Boomerangs are found as drops from specific enemies, some can be found in fixed locations or chests.

  • Location: Often dropped by early-game Bokoblins, particularly those wielding them. You can reliably find one in the East Necluda region, near the coast, carried by a Bokoblin.

• Lizal Boomerang:
  • Damage: 14
  • Location: Dropped by Lizalfos who wield them. These are common in wetlands and near water bodies, such as the Lanayru Wetlands or Zora's Domain.
  • Strategy: A solid upgrade from the basic boomerang. Its increased damage makes it more viable for combat against stronger Lizalfos or Moblins.
• Giant Boomerang:
  • Damage: 25
  • Location: This powerful boomerang is often found in chests in more challenging areas or dropped by stronger enemies like Black Lizalfos. A guaranteed location is in a chest within the Dueling Peaks region, specifically in the Kakariko Village area, look for it in the small pond near the village entrance.
  • Strategy: The Giant Boomerang deals significant damage, making it a viable option for mid-game combat. Its larger size can make it slightly trickier to catch, so practice is key. Consider using it to clear out camps of Moblins or even weaker Hinox.

Advanced Boomerang Techniques

• Elemental Infusion: Like other weapons, boomerangs can be infused with elemental effects by throwing them through an elemental effect (e.g., a fire created by a Red Chuchu jelly). This allows for ranged elemental attacks without consuming elemental arrows.
• Stasis+ Combo: Throw a boomerang, then use Stasis+ on an enemy. As the boomerang returns, it will hit the frozen enemy, dealing damage. This is particularly effective with the Giant Boomerang.
• Glide Catch: If you're on a high vantage point, you can throw a boomerang and then glide down, catching it as you descend. This is a stylish way to maintain momentum and retrieve your weapon.
• Ranged Headshots: With practice, you can aim boomerangs for headshots on Bokoblins and Lizalfos, dealing critical damage and often stunning them.

• Mind Your Surroundings: Boomerangs can get stuck on trees, walls, or other environmental obstacles, preventing their return. Ensure you have a clear throwing path.
• Don't Over-rely: While versatile, boomerangs are not always the best choice. For single, powerful enemies, a strong melee weapon or bow might be more efficient. Use boomerangs for their specific strengths: durability conservation and crowd control.
