Equipment & Inventory Management
Effective management of Link's ever-expanding arsenal and inventory is crucial for success in Termina. Unlike other Zelda titles, Majora's Mask operates on a strict three-day cycle, meaning careful planning and understanding of item persistence is paramount. This section will guide you through optimizing your inventory, acquiring essential gear, and making the most of your limited space.
The Item Screen (Start Menu)
Pressing the START button brings up Link's menu, which is divided into several useful tabs:
- Items: This is where you'll find all your collected equipment, consumables, and quest items. You can assign most items to the C-buttons for quick access.
- Masks: A dedicated tab for all the masks you've collected. Masks cannot be assigned to C-buttons directly; instead, you must select them from this menu to equip them.
- Quest Status: Tracks your progress on various side quests, including the Bomber's Notebook and the number of Stray Fairies collected in each dungeon.
- Map: Displays the current area map. As you progress, you'll find Dungeon Maps and Compass items that enhance this feature.
Key Inventory Management Strategies
- C-Button Assignments: Always keep essential items assigned to your C-buttons. Common choices include the Bow, Bombs, Hookshot (once acquired), and a healing item like a Potion or Fairy. Remember that some items, like the Ocarina of Time, are automatically assigned to a C-button when obtained.
- Consumable Stockpiling: While most consumables (Arrows, Bombs, Rupees) reset after playing the Song of Time, certain key items do not. Always aim to maximize your stock of Arrows and Bombs before a dungeon run. You can purchase these from the Bomb Shop or Trading Post in Clock Town.
- Bank Your Rupees: Rupees are perhaps the most important resource that resets with the Song of Time. Deposit all your excess Rupees at the Bank in West Clock Town before resetting the cycle. This allows you to accumulate wealth over multiple cycles.
- Bottled Items: The six Empty Bottles are invaluable. Prioritize filling them with useful items that persist across cycles.
- Great Fairy's Tears: Obtained from the Great Fairy of Kindness in Clock Town after collecting all Stray Fairies from the first dungeon. These fully restore health and magic.
- Red Potion: Restores 8 hearts. Can be bought from various merchants or found in chests.
- Green Potion: Restores your magic meter. Useful for magic-heavy masks or items.
- Milk: Restores 5 hearts. Can be purchased from the Milk Bar in East Clock Town.
- Fairies: Catch them in bottles to automatically revive Link upon defeat. Excellent for boss fights.
- Fish: Can be used to feed hungry creatures or as bait.
Essential Equipment & Acquisition
Swords
- Kokiri Sword: Your starting weapon.

- Gilded Sword: The ultimate sword. To get this, you must first have the Razor Sword. On Day 1 or 2, take the Razor Sword to the Blacksmith's and give him Gold Dust (won from the Goron Race). This upgrade costs nothing but takes until the morning of Day 3 to complete. You must retrieve it before resetting time. This sword is permanent and does not break.
