Equipment Upgrades
While Link is a capable hero from the start, Majora's Mask offers several crucial equipment upgrades that significantly enhance his combat prowess, defensive capabilities, and utility throughout Termina. Prioritizing these upgrades will make your journey through the three-day cycle much smoother, especially when tackling the formidable temples and bosses.
Sword Upgrades
Your sword is your primary weapon, and upgrading it is essential for dealing increased damage to enemies and bosses. There are two main upgrades available for Link's sword:
Razor Sword
- Effect: Doubles your attack power compared to the Kokiri Sword.
- Location: Mountain Smithy in Mountain Village.
- Steps:
- Ensure you have at least 100 Rupees.
- After clearing Snowhead Temple and restoring warmth to the Mountain Village, visit the Mountain Smithy.
- Speak to the Goron smith, Zubora. He will offer to temper your Kokiri Sword into the Razor Sword for 100 Rupees.
- You must return to the smithy on the next day to pick up the upgraded sword. Be mindful of the three-day cycle; if you start the tempering on Day 1, you can pick it up on Day 2. If you start it on Day 3, you won't be able to retrieve it before the moon crashes.
- Important Note: The Razor Sword is fragile and will break after 100 strikes or if you use the Song of Time. It is a temporary upgrade.
Gilded Sword
- Effect: Triples your attack power compared to the Kokiri Sword, making it the strongest sword in the game. It is also unbreakable.
- Location: Mountain Smithy in Mountain Village.
- Prerequisites: You must first obtain the Razor Sword.
- Steps:
- After obtaining the Razor Sword, you will need Gold Dust.
- To get Gold Dust, you must win the Goron Race. This race becomes available after you have thawed Darmani III (the Goron Elder's son) with Hot Spring Water and learned the Goron Lullaby.
- Enter the Goron Shrine (the cave behind the Goron Village) and speak to the Goron Elder. Play the Goron Lullaby to him to wake him up.
- As a Goron, roll down the path from Goron Village towards the Mountain Village. You will find a large Goron blocking a cave entrance. Use a Powder Keg to blast open the cave.
- Inside, you'll find a Hot Spring. Fill an Empty Bottle with Hot Spring Water.
- Return to Darmani III (the frozen Goron near the entrance to Snowhead Temple) and use the Hot Spring Water on him. He will then challenge you to a race.
- Win the Goron Race (as Goron Link) by following the path and using your Goron Roll effectively. The prize for winning is the Gold Dust.
- Return to the Mountain Smithy with the Razor Sword and the Gold Dust.
- Speak to Zubora again. He will offer to temper your Razor Sword into the Gilded Sword using the Gold Dust. This costs no additional Rupees.
- Similar to the Razor Sword, you must return on the next day to pick up the Gilded Sword. Plan your time carefully!
Shield Upgrades
Your shield is crucial for defense, deflecting enemy attacks and projectiles. While you start with the basic Hero's Shield, a significant upgrade is available.
Mirror Shield
- Effect: Not only deflects attacks like the Hero's Shield, but can also reflect light, which is essential for solving puzzles and defeating certain enemies.
- Location: Beneath the Graveyard in Ikana Canyon.
- Prerequisites: You need to have learned the Song of Storms and obtained the Hookshot.
- Steps:
- Travel to Ikana Canyon.
- Go to the Ikana Graveyard, located in the southeastern part of the canyon.
- On the first night (Day 1, 6 PM to 6 AM), a Stalchild will appear near the large tombstone in the center of the graveyard. Speak to him and agree to help him.
- He will lead you to a grave. Use the Song of Storms to open the grave.
- Descend into the grave. You will encounter several Iron Knuckles. Defeat them.
- Navigate through the dungeon-like area, using the Hookshot to cross gaps and solve minor puzzles.
- Eventually, you will reach a room with a large, mummified creature – the Garo Master. Defeat him.
- After defeating the Garo Master, he will teach you the Garo's Mask.
- Proceed further into the grave until you find a large block. Push it aside to reveal a hidden passage.
- In the next room, you will find the Mirror Shield on a pedestal.
Quiver Upgrades
Increasing your arrow capacity is incredibly useful, especially for ranged combat and puzzles that require multiple shots.
Large Quiver
- Effect: Increases your maximum arrow capacity from 20 to 30.
- Location: Southern Swamp Shooting Gallery in the Southern Swamp.
- Steps:
- Travel to the Southern Swamp.
- Locate the Southern Swamp Shooting Gallery, which is near the entrance to Woodfall.
- Pay 20 Rupees to play the shooting game.
- Achieve a perfect score of 2,120 points or higher by hitting all targets. This requires good aim and quick reflexes.
- Upon achieving the perfect score, you will be awarded the Large Quiver.
Biggest Quiver

- Location: East Clock Town Shooting Gallery.
- Prerequisites: You must have already obtained the Large Quiver.

- Locate the East Clock Town Shooting Gallery, next to the Honey & Darling's Shop.
- Pay 20 Rupees to play the shooting game.
- Achieve a perfect score of 2,180 points or higher by hitting all targets. This game is generally considered more challenging than the swamp version due to faster-moving targets.
- Upon achieving the perfect score, you will be awarded the Biggest Quiver.
Bomb Bag Upgrades
More bombs mean more opportunities to blast open secret passages, defeat armored enemies, and solve environmental puzzles.
Big Bomb Bag
- Effect: Increases your maximum bomb capacity from 20 to 30.
- Location: Bomb Shop in West Clock Town.
- Steps:
- On the first night (Day 1, 6 PM to 6 AM), a thief named Sakon will attempt to steal the Bomb Bag from the old lady in West Clock Town.
- Wait outside the Bomb Shop until 12:00 AM (midnight) on the first night.
- Sakon will emerge and attempt to steal the Bomb Bag.
- As Link, quickly attack Sakon to prevent him from escaping with the Bomb Bag.
- If you successfully stop him, the old lady will reward you with the Big Bomb Bag.
- Alternative Method: If you fail to stop Sakon, or miss the event, you can purchase the Big Bomb Bag from the Bomb Shop for 90 Rupees on subsequent days.
Biggest Bomb Bag
- Effect: Increases your maximum bomb capacity from 30 to 40.
- Location: Goron Village.
- Prerequisites: You must have already obtained the Big Bomb Bag.
- Steps:
- Travel to Goron Village.
- Locate the Goron who sells Powder Kegs. He is usually found inside the Goron Shop.
- You need to be Goron Link to speak with him.
- Purchase a Powder Keg from him for 50 Rupees.
- Take the Powder Keg to the path leading to the Goron Racetrack (the one blocked by the large Goron).
- Use the Powder Keg to blow up the large boulder blocking the cave entrance.
- Inside this cave, you'll find a small Goron. Speak to him.
- He will offer to sell you the Biggest Bomb Bag for 200 Rupees.
