Link starts with the Kokiri Sword and Hero's Shield. The Kokiri Sword can be upgraded to the Razor Sword (requires 100 Rupees and a visit to the Mountain Smithy) and then to the Gilded Sword (requires Gold Dust from the Goron Race). The Mirror Shield, found in Ikana Canyon, is essential for reflecting light and solving puzzles. Each sword upgrade significantly increases your attack power, making combat easier. The Mirror Shield also offers superior defense against certain attacks.
