Mask Locations
Collecting all the masks in Termina is one of the most rewarding (and challenging!) aspects of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. Many masks are essential for progression, while others unlock side quests, provide unique abilities, or are simply fun to collect. This comprehensive guide details the acquisition of every mask, including specific steps, required items, optimal strategies, and common pitfalls to ensure you don't miss a single one.
There are a total of 24 masks to collect in Majora's Mask. They can be broadly categorized into Transformation Masks, Utility Masks, and the ultimate reward, the Fierce Deity Mask.
Transformation Masks
These powerful masks allow Link to transform into different races, granting him their unique abilities and access to new areas. Mastering their unique controls and abilities is crucial for navigating Termina and completing dungeons.
- Deku Mask
- Location: Clock Tower (East Clock Town)
- Acquisition: This is the very first mask you obtain and is integral to the game's opening sequence. After Skull Kid transforms Link into a Deku Scrub, you'll awaken in the Clock Tower. Speak to the Happy Mask Salesman, who will teach you the Song of Healing. Playing this song will transform you back into your Hylian form and bestow upon you the Deku Mask.
- Required Items: None (part of the main story progression).
- Strategy: No special strategy required; simply follow the game's introduction. The Deku Mask allows Link to hover using flowers, shoot bubbles, and spin attack, which are vital for early game puzzles and combat.
- Goron Mask
- Location: Mountain Village / Goron Shrine
- Acquisition:
- First, you must acquire the Lens of Truth from the cave in the Southern Swamp. This requires having the Hookshot (from Pirates' Fortress) or using the Deku Mask to fly across the swamp.
- Head to Mountain Village. If it's the First or Second Day, the area will be frozen. You'll need a bottle of Hot Spring Water to melt the large ice blocks blocking the path to the Goron Shrine. The Hot Spring Water can be found in a cave near the base of Snowhead Mountain.
- Near the frozen waterfall in Mountain Village, use the Lens of Truth to spot the invisible ghost of Darmani III.
- Follow Darmani's ghost as he floats towards the Goron Shrine (a cave high up on the mountain).
- Inside the Goron Shrine, play the Song of Healing for Darmani's spirit. He will pass on, leaving behind the Goron Mask.
- Required Items: Lens of Truth, Empty Bottle (for Hot Spring Water), Hot Spring Water (if on Day 1 or 2).
- Strategy: Navigating the icy paths to the Goron Shrine can be tricky. As a Deku Scrub, you can use the Deku Flowers to fly over some obstacles. The Goron Mask allows Link to roll at high speeds, punch with powerful attacks, and stomp the ground, which are essential for traversing Snowhead Mountain and its temple.
- Common Pitfall: Forgetting the Lens of Truth will prevent you from seeing Darmani's ghost, halting your progress. Also, Hot Spring Water only stays hot for a short time, so be quick to use it before it cools down.
- Zora Mask
- Location: Great Bay Coast
- Acquisition:
- After reaching Great Bay, swim out into the ocean towards the Zora Cape.
- You'll discover Mikau, the Zora guitarist from the Indigo-Go's, severely injured and floating in the water.
- Crucially, you must push Mikau to the nearby shore. Swim behind him and continuously push him towards the beach.
- Once Mikau is safely on the sand, play the Song of Healing for him. He will share his dying thoughts and then pass on, leaving behind the Zora Mask.
- Required Items: None (part of main story progression).
- Strategy: Be mindful of the Bio Deku and other enemies in the water while pushing Mikau. The Zora Mask allows Link to swim incredibly fast, dive, use electric barriers, and fire boomerang fins, making underwater exploration and combat much easier. It's indispensable for Great Bay Temple.
- Common Pitfall: Many players forget the crucial step of pushing Mikau to shore, leading to confusion when the Song of Healing doesn't work while he's still in the water.
Utility and Side Quest Masks
These masks offer various benefits, from aiding in side quests and unlocking secrets to providing minor conveniences and unique interactions with Termina's inhabitants.
- Postman's Hat
- Location: Post Office, West Clock Town
- Acquisition: This mask is obtained by completing a specific part of the "Anju and Kafei" side quest.
- On the Final Day (Day 3), after 6 PM, go to the Post Office in West Clock Town.
- Speak to the Postman. He will be agonizing over his duty to deliver the Express Mail to Madame Aroma.
- Accept the Express Mail to Mama from him.
- Immediately take the Express Mail to Madame Aroma, who is located in the Mayor's Residence in East Clock Town.
- Return to the Post Office. You will find the Postman there, having decided to abandon his post. Speak to him, and he will give you the Postman's Hat as thanks for delivering the letter and freeing him from his duties.
- Required Items: Express Mail to Mama (obtained from the Postman on Day 3 after 6 PM). This entire sequence is only possible if you have progressed far enough in the Kafei and Anju questline to have the Postman receive the Express Mail.
- Strategy: This is a time-sensitive event on the Final Day. Ensure you have completed the necessary steps of the Kafei and Anju quest to trigger the Postman's dilemma. The Postman's Hat allows Link to check any mailbox in Termina, revealing how many rupees are inside.
- Common Pitfall: Missing the 6 PM window on the Final Day, or not having the preceding steps of the Kafei quest completed, will prevent you from obtaining this mask.
- All-Night Mask
- Location: Curiosity Shop, West Clock Town
- Acquisition: This is one of the most expensive masks in the game.
- On the First Night, around midnight (12:00 AM - 1:00 AM), go to North Clock Town. Sakon, the thief, will attempt to steal the Bomb Bag from the old woman (Bomb Shop Owner's Mother).
- You must intervene and defeat Sakon before he escapes with the Bomb Bag. Successfully doing so will ensure the Curiosity Shop has special inventory later.
- On the Final Night (Day 3), after 10 PM, the Curiosity Shop in West Clock Town will open.
- Enter the shop and purchase the All-Night Mask for a hefty 500 Rupees.
- Required Items: 500 Rupees. Successfully saving the old woman from Sakon on the First Night.
- Strategy: Saving the old woman is crucial; if Sakon succeeds, the All-Night Mask will not be available. Make sure you have enough Rupees saved up. The All-Night Mask allows Link to stay awake during long stories told by NPCs (like Anju's Grandmother), preventing him from falling asleep and missing dialogue or items.
- Common Pitfall: Failing to save the old woman from Sakon, or not having 500 Rupees on hand on the Final Night.
- Blast Mask
- Location: North Clock Town
- Acquisition: On the First Night, around midnight (12:00 AM - 1:00 AM), an old woman carrying a large Bomb Bag will be mugged by Sakon in North Clock Town. Intervene and defeat Sakon before he can escape with her goods. She will reward you with the Blast Mask as thanks.
- Required Items: None.
- Strategy: Be quick! Sakon is fast, and you need to hit him several times (with your sword or Deku bubbles) before he reaches the exit. The Blast Mask allows Link to create an explosion at will, similar to a bomb, but it damages Link unless he blocks with his shield. It's useful for breaking cracked walls or activating bomb-triggered switches without using actual bombs.
- Common Pitfall: Allowing Sakon to escape with the Bomb Bag. If this happens, you'll need to reset time and try again.
- Stone Mask
- Location: Ikana Canyon (Pirates' Fortress entrance)
- Acquisition:
- Travel to the area just before the Pirates' Fortress in Great Bay.
- Near the entrance, slightly to the right, behind a large boulder, use the Lens of Truth.
- You will spot an invisible soldier named Shiro, who is exhausted and unable to move.
- Give him a Red Potion or a Blue Potion to restore his energy.
- As thanks, Shiro will give you the Stone Mask.
- Required Items: Lens of Truth, Red Potion or Blue Potion.
- Strategy: The Stone Mask makes Link invisible to most enemies (though not all, and not bosses). This is incredibly useful for sneaking through areas like the Pirates' Fortress without being detected, or simply avoiding combat.
- Common Pitfall: Forgetting to bring a potion, or not having the Lens of Truth.
- Kamaro's Mask
- Location: North Clock Town (on a mushroom-shaped rock)
- Acquisition:
- On the First or Second Night, after midnight (12:00 AM - 6:00 AM), go to North Clock Town.
- Look for a mushroom-shaped rock formation. On top of it, you'll find the ghost of Kamaro, the dancer.
- Play the Song of Healing for him.
- Kamaro will be able to pass on, and as thanks, he will give you his mask.
- Required Items: None.
- Strategy: To reach Kamaro, you can use the Deku Mask to fly from the higher ledges in North Clock Town (e.g., from the path leading to the Observatory) onto the mushroom rock. The Kamaro's Mask allows Link to perform Kamaro's unique dance, which can teach the Rosa Sisters in East Clock Town a new dance, rewarding you with a Piece of Heart.
- Common Pitfall: Trying to find Kamaro during the day, or outside the specific night hours.
- Couple's Mask
- Location: Mayor's Residence, East Clock Town
- Acquisition: This mask is the ultimate reward for successfully completing the lengthy and intricate "Anju and Kafei" side quest. This quest spans all three days and requires precise timing and actions.
- Day 1, 10 AM - 8 PM: Obtain Kafei's Mask from Madame Aroma in the Mayor's Residence.
- Day 1, 2:10 PM: Wait for the Postman to deliver a letter to Anju at the Stock Pot Inn.
- Day 1, 2:10 PM - 8 PM: Speak to Anju while wearing Kafei's Mask. She will give you a letter to mail.
- Day 1, before 9 PM: Mail Anju's Letter to Kafei in any mailbox.
- Day 2, 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM: Wait in the Laundry Pool for Kafei to retrieve the letter. Follow him into the Curiosity Shop's back entrance.
- Day 2, 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM: Speak to Kafei in the Curiosity Shop's back room. He will give you the Pendant of Memories.
- Day 2, before 9 PM: Deliver the Pendant of Memories to Anju at the Stock Pot Inn.
- Day 3, 1:00 PM - 10:00 PM: Go to Ikana Canyon. Follow the path to Sakon's Hideout.
- Day 3, 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM: Enter Sakon's Hideout with Kafei. Complete the stealth and puzzle sequence to retrieve the Sun Mask.
- Day 3, 10:00 PM - 6:00 AM (Final Night): Return to the Stock Pot Inn. Anju and Kafei will reunite in the Employee's Only room.
- Speak to them after their reunion. They will thank you for bringing them together and give you the Couple's Mask.
- Required Items: Kafei's Mask, Anju's Letter, Pendant of Memories.
- Strategy: This is arguably the most complex side quest in the game, requiring precise timing over all three days. Consult a dedicated guide for the "Anju and Kafei" quest for full, step-by-step details. The Couple's Mask allows Link to calm down the arguing Mayor Dotour in the Mayor's Residence, earning you a Piece of Heart.
- Common Pitfall: Missing any of the precise time windows or steps will fail the quest. It's highly recommended to use the Song of Time to reset if you make a mistake.
- Great Fairy's Mask
- Location: Laundry Pool, Clock Town
- Acquisition:
- Collect all 15 Stray Fairies within the first dungeon, Woodfall Temple. Some are hidden in chests, others require specific actions or Deku Link's abilities.
- Bring all 15 Stray Fairies to the Great Fairy of Magic, located in the Great Fairy Fountain in the Laundry Pool (south of Clock Town).
- She will restore her true form and reward you with the Great Fairy's Mask.
- Required Items: All 15 Stray Fairies from Woodfall Temple.
- Strategy: This mask is obtained from the first set of Stray Fairies. Each dungeon has 15 Stray Fairies, but only the first set gives this mask. The Great Fairy's Mask attracts Stray Fairies to Link, making it easier to find them in subsequent dungeons. It will glow when a Stray Fairy is nearby.
- Common Pitfall: Missing even one Stray Fairy in Woodfall Temple will prevent you from getting the mask until you return and find it.
- Romani's Mask
- Location: Romani Ranch
- Acquisition: This mask is obtained by successfully completing the "Protect Romani's Milk" side quest over two days.
- Day 1, 6 AM - 8 PM: Go to Romani Ranch. Speak to Romani and agree to help her.
- Day 1, 2:30 AM - 5:15 AM (early Day 2): Defend the cows from "Them" (aliens) by shooting them with your Bow. You must prevent any alien from reaching the barn.
- Day 2, 6 PM - 10 PM: Speak to Cremia at Romani Ranch. Agree to help her deliver milk to Clock Town.
- During the delivery, protect Cremia's wagon from the Gorman Brothers who will try to attack it. Use your Bow to fend them off.
- Successfully deliver the milk. Cremia will give you Romani's Mask as a token of her gratitude.
- Required Items: Bow.
- Strategy: For the First Day's alien invasion, use your Bow effectively to shoot the aliens before they reach the barn. For the Second Day's milk delivery, continuously shoot the Gorman Brothers to keep them away from the wagon. Romani's Mask allows Link to enter the Latte Milk Bar in East Clock Town at night, which is otherwise restricted.
- Common Pitfall: Failing to protect the cows or the milk wagon. If either fails, you'll need to reset time and try again.
- Circus Leader's Mask (Gorman's Mask)
- Location: Milk Bar, East Clock Town
- Acquisition:
- On the First or Second Night, after 10 PM, go to the Latte Milk Bar in East Clock Town. You must be wearing Romani's Mask to enter.
- Speak to Gorman, the owner of the Gorman Troupe, who is sitting at a table.
- He will ask for a performance. Play the following songs in order, using the corresponding transformation masks:
- As Zora Link, play the Ballad of the Wind Fish (or New Wave Bossa Nova).
- As Goron Link, play the Goron Lullaby.
- As Deku Link, play the Song of Healing.
- Gorman will be deeply moved by the performance and will give you the Circus Leader's Mask.
- Required Items: Romani's Mask (to enter the bar), Zora Mask, Goron Mask, Deku Mask.
- Strategy: Ensure you have all three transformation masks and Romani's Mask before attempting this. The Circus Leader's Mask has no direct in-game effect other than being a collectible and a symbol of completing this emotional side quest.
- Common Pitfall: Forgetting Romani's Mask, or not having all transformation masks.
- Kafei's Mask
- Location: Mayor's Residence, East Clock Town
- Acquisition: This mask is the starting point for the "Anju and Kafei" quest.
- On the First Day, after 10 AM, go to the Mayor's Residence in East Clock Town.
- Enter the Mayor's office and speak to Madame Aroma.
- She will ask you to find her missing son, Kafei, and give you his mask to aid in your search.
- Required Items: None.
- Strategy: This mask is essential for progressing the "Anju and Kafei" questline. Wearing Kafei's Mask allows Link to ask NPCs about Kafei without revealing his identity, and it's required for certain interactions with Anju.
- Common Pitfall: Forgetting to pick up the mask, which will halt progress on the lengthy side quest.
- Keaton Mask
- Location: Various locations (e.g., North Clock Town, Milk Road)
- Acquisition:
- Acquire Kafei's Mask.
- Find a patch of rustling grass (e.g., in North Clock Town near the tree, Milk Road, Mountain Village, Southern Swamp, Termina Field).
- Wear Kafei's Mask and cut the rustling grass with your sword.
- A Keaton will appear. It will challenge you to a quiz. Answer its five questions correctly.
- If you answer all questions correctly, the Keaton will disappear, leaving behind the Keaton Mask.
- Required Items: Kafei's Mask.
- Strategy: The Keaton quiz questions are random but generally relate to facts about Termina or the game's lore. If you fail, just try again at another rustling grass patch. The Keaton Mask has no direct in-game effect other than being a collectible.
- Common Pitfall: Not wearing Kafei's Mask when cutting the grass, or failing the quiz.
- Bunny Hood
- Location: Romani Ranch
- Acquisition:
- First, you must acquire the Garo's Mask (see below for details).
- Go to Romani Ranch.
- Enter the barn and speak to the scarecrow inside while wearing the Garo's Mask.
- The scarecrow will recognize you and give you the Bunny Hood.
- Required Items: Garo's Mask.
- Strategy: The Bunny Hood is one of the most useful masks in the game, as it doubles Link's movement speed. It's invaluable for traversing large areas, completing timed challenges, and simply speeding up gameplay.
- Common Pitfall: Not having Garo's Mask, or trying to talk to the scarecrow without wearing it.
- Garo's Mask
- Location: Gorman Track, Milk Road
- Acquisition:
- On the First or Second Day, go to the Gorman Track on Milk Road (accessible after clearing the path from the large boulder with a Bomb).
- Speak to the Gorman Brothers.
- Challenge them to a race while riding Epona and win.
- Upon winning, they will begrudgingly give you Garo's Mask.
- Required Items: Epona (obtained from Romani Ranch on Day 1 after the alien invasion).
- Strategy: This race can be challenging. Use Epona's carrots wisely to maintain speed, especially on turns, and avoid the obstacles. The Garo's Mask allows Link to summon a Garo (a ghost-like ninja) in specific locations in Ikana Canyon, who will give hints or open secret paths.
- Common Pitfall: Losing the race, or not having Epona.
- Captain's Hat
- Location: Ikana Graveyard
- Acquisition:
- On the First or Second Night (6 PM - 6 AM), go to the Ikana Graveyard.
- Pull the large grave at the very back of the graveyard. This will wake up three Stalchildren.
- Defeat the three Stalchildren.
- After their defeat, their leader, Captain Keeta, will emerge from the grave.
- Defeat Captain Keeta in battle.
- Upon his defeat, he will give you his Captain's Hat.
- Required Items: None.
- Strategy: Be prepared for a fight. The Stalchildren are numerous, and Captain Keeta has a powerful attack. The Captain's Hat allows Link to command Stalchildren (skeletal enemies), making them open certain paths or reveal secrets in Ikana Graveyard.
- Common Pitfall: Trying to get the mask during the day, or being unprepared for the fight.
- Giant's Mask
- Location: Stone Tower Temple
- Acquisition: This mask is found within the Stone Tower Temple itself.
- Progress through the Stone Tower Temple until you reach the second main room (the large room with the central pillar and numerous platforms, after the first mini-boss).
- The mask is located in a chest on one of the higher platforms in this room. You will need to manipulate the temple's gravity and use various abilities to reach it.
- Required Items: None (found within the dungeon).
- Strategy: You'll need to navigate the temple and solve some puzzles to reach this chest. The Giant's Mask is absolutely essential for the boss fight against Twinmold, allowing Link to grow to a massive size and fight them effectively. It can only be used in boss rooms.
- Common Pitfall: Missing the chest in the complex Stone Tower Temple.
- Don Gero's Mask
- Location: Mountain Village
- Acquisition:
- Complete Snowhead Temple and melt the ice around Snowhead Mountain.
- As Goron Link, go to the Goron Shrine (the cave where you got the Goron Mask).
- Inside, you'll find a large piece of Rock Sirloin. Pick it up.
- Carry the Rock Sirloin to the hungry Goron located on a high ledge in Mountain Village (near the frozen waterfall area). You'll need to use Goron Link's rolling ability and possibly Deku Link's flying to reach him.
- Give the Rock Sirloin to the hungry Goron. He will give you Don Gero's Mask.
- Required Items: Goron Mask, ability to clear Snowhead Temple.
- Strategy: The Rock Sirloin is heavy and will slow you down. The Don Gero's Mask allows Link to gather the five Frog Choir members scattered across Termina. Once all are gathered, they will sing, and you will receive a Piece of Heart.
- Common Pitfall: The Rock Sirloin will disappear if you reset time, so you must complete the delivery in one cycle.
- Gibdo Mask
- Location: Music Box House, Ikana Canyon
- Acquisition:
- First, you must acquire the Song of Storms from the Ikana Graveyard (by pulling the grave on Day 2 or 3 night, defeating the Big Poe, and learning the song).
- Go to the Music Box House in Ikana Canyon.
- Enter the house and go downstairs to the well.
- Play the Song of Storms to make the well fill with water, extinguishing the flames and revealing a hidden passage.
- Enter the passage and find Pamela's father, who has been turned into a Gibdo.
- Play the Song of Healing for him. He will be cured and give you the Gibdo Mask.
- Required Items: Song of Storms.
- Strategy: The Gibdo Mask allows Link to communicate with Gibdos (mummies) and Mummys (Redeads). In Ikana Canyon, this is essential for entering the Secret Shrine and the Stone Tower Temple by trading items with the Gibdos in the well.
- Common Pitfall: Not knowing the Song of Storms, or trying to enter the well without it.
- Mask of Scents
- Location: Southern Swamp (Deku Palace)
- Acquisition:
- After completing Woodfall Temple and rescuing Princess Anju, she will return to the Deku Palace.
- Go to the Deku Palace and speak to the Butler (the Deku who runs the Deku Palace maze).
- He will challenge you to a race through the Deku Palace maze as Deku Link.
- Win the race, and he will give you the Mask of Scents.
- Required Items: Deku Mask, Woodfall Temple completed.
- Strategy: The race requires good control of Deku Link's hovering and spinning abilities. The Mask of Scents allows Link to detect certain smells, particularly mushroom spores, which can be used to find hidden items or ingredients for potions.
- Common Pitfall: Losing the race; you can try again.
- Bremen Mask
- Location: Laundry Pool, Clock Town
- Acquisition:
- On the First or Second Night, after 6 PM, go to the Laundry Pool in Clock Town.
- Speak to Guru-Guru, the leader of the Gorman Troupe, who is practicing his accordion.
- He will tell you a story about his past. Listen to his entire story.
- After he finishes, he will give you the Bremen Mask.
- Required Items: None.
- Strategy: The Bremen Mask allows Link to march, and when worn, small animals (like chicks) will follow him. This is used to gather chicks into a flock at Romani Ranch, which will then grow into Cuccos, earning you a Piece of Heart.
- Common Pitfall: Not listening to the entire story, or trying to get the mask during the day.
The Ultimate Mask
This mask is the most powerful in the game and is reserved for the final confrontation.
- Fierce Deity Mask
- Location: Moon (inside Majora's Mask)
- Acquisition: This legendary mask can only be obtained just before the final boss battle.
- You must have collected all 20 other non-transformation masks (excluding the Deku, Goron, and Zora Masks).
- On the Final Day, when the moon is about to crash, enter the Moon.
- Inside the Moon, you will find five children playing around a tree. Each child represents a boss from the four main dungeons.
- Speak to the four children wearing the masks of Odolwa, Goht, Gyorg, and Twinmold. They will ask you to play a game with them inside their respective boss arenas.
- You must give each of these four children a specific number of your collected masks (any masks, except the transformation masks).
- Child with Odolwa's Mask: Give 1 mask.
- Child with Goht's Mask: Give 2 masks.
- Child with Gyorg's Mask: Give 3 masks.
- Child with Twinmold's Mask: Give 4 masks.
- After giving masks to all four children, approach the child wearing Majora's Mask, who is sitting under the tree.
- Speak to him. He will give you the Fierce Deity Mask, stating that "You have no more masks left, do you?"
- Required Items: All 20 non-transformation masks (excluding Deku, Goron, Zora).
- Strategy: The Fierce Deity Mask transforms Link into Fierce Deity Link, a powerful adult form with a massive double-helix sword that can shoot energy beams. This form is incredibly powerful and makes the final boss battle against Majora much easier. It can only be used in boss rooms.
- Common Pitfall: Missing any of the 20 required masks will prevent you from obtaining the Fierce Deity Mask. Ensure you have completed all mask-related side quests before entering the Moon.
By following this comprehensive guide, you'll be well on your way to collecting every mask in Termina and unlocking all the secrets and powers they hold. Good luck, and may the goddesses be with you!
