Masks (General Overview)
Masks are arguably the most iconic and central mechanic in The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. Unlike previous Zelda titles where masks were often purely cosmetic or provided minor, temporary buffs, here they are fundamental to progression, exploration, and even combat. Link can acquire a total of 24 masks throughout his three-day cycle in Termina, each offering unique abilities, transformations, or facilitating specific interactions with the world's inhabitants.
Types of Masks
Masks in Majora's Mask can be broadly categorized into two main types:
- Transformation Masks: These are the most significant masks, fundamentally altering Link's form and abilities. They are crucial for navigating specific environments, solving puzzles, and engaging in unique combat scenarios.
- Utility/Social Masks: These masks do not change Link's physical form but provide various benefits, such as allowing access to certain areas, influencing NPCs, or granting minor advantages. Many are essential for completing side quests and collecting valuable items like Pieces of Heart.
Equipping and Using Masks
To equip a mask, simply open your inventory screen (typically by pressing the START button), select the desired mask, and assign it to one of your C-buttons (C-Left, C-Down, C-Right). Pressing the assigned C-button will instantly equip or unequip the mask. Note that transformation masks have unique animations and sound effects when equipped or unequipped, signifying the change.
- Transformation Restrictions: While in a transformed state (e.g., as Deku Link), you cannot equip other masks. You must revert to human Link first.
- Time Sensitivity: Some mask-related events or quests are time-sensitive, requiring you to wear a specific mask at a particular time of day or night. Always consult your Bomber's Notebook for detailed schedules.
- Mask Inventory: All collected masks are stored in a dedicated section of your inventory. They are permanent acquisitions and will carry over even when you reset the three-day cycle by playing the Song of Time.
Key Transformation Masks and Their Acquisition
These four masks are central to the main quest and are obtained early in your adventure:
- Deku Mask:
- Acquisition: Obtained automatically at the very beginning of the game after the Skull Kid transforms Link into a Deku Scrub.
- Abilities: Allows Link to hover using Deku Flowers, shoot bubbles, and interact with Deku-specific objects and characters. Essential for navigating the Southern Swamp and Woodfall Temple.
- Goron Mask:
- Acquisition: Found in the Goron Shrine in Snowhead Mountain. You must first obtain the Lens of Truth from the Great Fairy in Ikana Canyon (or use the Stone Mask to sneak past the invisible Goron Elder's son) and then play the Goron Lullaby to the frozen Goron Elder.
- Abilities: Transforms Link into a powerful Goron, allowing him to roll at high speeds, punch enemies, and activate heavy switches. Crucial for traversing Snowhead Mountain and Snowhead Temple.
- Zora Mask:
- Acquisition: Discovered on the coast of Great Bay, after finding the dying Zora, Mikau, and playing the Song of Healing for him.
- Abilities: Transforms Link into a Zora, granting him the ability to swim underwater indefinitely, use Zora fins as boomerangs, and generate an electric barrier. Indispensable for exploring Great Bay and Great Bay Temple.
- Fierce Deity Mask:
- Acquisition: This powerful mask is obtained only after collecting all 20 other masks in the game. On the final moon, speak to the children playing inside the moon and give them all your collected masks. The last child will give you the Fierce Deity Mask.
- Abilities: Transforms Link into a towering, sword-wielding deity with immense power, capable of firing energy beams. Primarily used for the final boss battle against Majora.
The Importance of Side Quests
While the main transformation masks are given to you as part of the story, many of the utility and social masks are acquired through engaging in Termina's rich and often emotional side quests. These quests frequently involve observing NPC schedules, using specific items, or performing certain actions within the three-day cycle. Completing these side quests not only rewards you with masks but also often grants Pieces of Heart, additional rupees, or other valuable items. Don't underestimate the power of these seemingly minor masks; they can unlock new areas, reveal hidden secrets, and deepen your understanding of Termina's struggling inhabitants.
