Reaching Clock Town
After your transformative encounter with the mischievous Skull Kid and the subsequent chase through the Lost Woods, you'll find yourself in the unfamiliar form of a Deku Scrub. Your immediate objective is to reach Clock Town, the vibrant central hub of Termina, to seek help and understand your predicament. This crucial journey begins within the confines of the Deku Palace grounds.
Navigating the Deku Palace Grounds as a Deku Scrub
As a Deku Scrub, your movement and combat options are unique. You cannot use your sword, but you possess a versatile bubble attack and the invaluable ability to launch from Deku Flowers, allowing you to glide over obstacles. Mastering these abilities is key to traversing the palace grounds efficiently.
- Initial Area & Basic Controls: You'll start in a small, enclosed area. Take a moment to practice your bubble attack (press B) on the nearby enemies. This is your primary offensive move in Deku form.
- Utilizing Deku Flowers: To cross larger gaps and reach higher platforms, locate the glowing Deku Flowers embedded in the ground.
- Stand on a Deku Flower.
- Hold the A button to burrow into it.
- Release A to launch into the air.
- Guide your flight using the control stick to land precisely on distant platforms.
- Evading Deku Guards: The Deku Palace is patrolled by Deku Scrubs. While you can defeat them with your bubble attack, it's often more efficient and safer to simply avoid them by flying over their patrol paths using Deku Flowers. Be warned: getting caught by a Deku Palace guard will result in you being thrown out of the palace grounds, forcing you to restart this section from the entrance. Prioritize stealth and aerial movement.
- Path to Exit: Work your way through the palace gardens, utilizing Deku Flowers to bypass obstacles and guards. The path is generally linear, leading you eastward. You'll eventually reach an exit that leads directly into the Southern Swamp.
Journey Through the Southern Swamp to Clock Town
Upon exiting the Deku Palace, you'll find yourself in the vast expanse of the Southern Swamp. While the swamp itself holds many secrets and future objectives, your immediate goal is to reach Clock Town. The path is relatively straightforward, but new players might find the open area a bit disorienting. Follow these steps carefully:
- Exit the Palace: From the Deku Palace entrance, head straight out. You'll be facing roughly north.
- Follow the Main Path: Look for a clear, dirt path that winds through the swamp. This path is your primary guide. You'll pass by various swamp features, including small ponds and patches of tall grass.
- Cross the Wooden Bridge: Shortly after leaving the palace area, you'll encounter a wooden bridge spanning a small body of water. Cross this bridge to continue on the main path.
- Observe Directional Signs: Keep an eye out for wooden signs along the path. These signs often point towards "Clock Town" or indicate the general direction. If you see a sign pointing left or straight ahead, follow it.
- The Fork in the Road: The path will eventually lead to a more open area where you'll encounter a distinct fork.
- One path leads towards the Woodfall Temple area (which you'll visit later).
- The other leads to Clock Town. To reach Clock Town, you need to take the path that veers to the right. This path will lead you uphill slightly.
- Approaching the Gates: Continue following this right-hand path. You'll soon see the imposing stone walls and gates of Clock Town in the distance. The path will lead you directly to the South Gate of Clock Town.
Important Note: As a Deku Scrub, you are vulnerable to many enemies in the swamp. While you can use your bubble attack, it's often safer and quicker to simply run past them. Avoid getting bogged down in combat unless absolutely necessary, especially given your limited health as a Deku.
Activating the Southern Swamp Owl Statue
Just before you enter the South Gate of Clock Town, you'll spot an Owl Statue on your left. This is a crucial landmark and save point. Strike it with your Deku Scrub's bubble attack to activate it. Activating Owl Statues allows you to:
- Save Your Progress: This is your primary method of saving in the game (outside of the Song of Time). Always activate and save at Owl Statues when you encounter them.
- Warp Points: Later in the game, once you learn the Song of Soaring, activated Owl Statues will serve as convenient warp points, allowing you to quickly travel across Termina.
Once you pass through the South Gate, you will officially arrive in Clock Town. Take a moment to appreciate the bustling atmosphere, but remember your urgent quest to revert to your Hylian form and prevent the moon's descent. Your adventure in Termina truly begins now!
