Woodfall Temple
The first true dungeon, located deep within Woodfall, requires you to navigate treacherous poisoned waters and the Deku Palace's political intrigue. Your primary goal here is to restore the flow of clean water to the swamp, which has been tainted by Odolwa's presence.
Key Information:
- Location: Woodfall Swamp, accessible after obtaining the Deku Mask and navigating the Deku Palace.
- Required Mask: Deku Mask (essential for navigating the dungeon and boss battle).
- Primary Objective: Defeat Odolwa and cleanse the Woodfall Swamp.
- Reward: Heart Container, Odolwa's Remains (granting the first Giant's Mask), and the cleansing of Woodfall.
Walkthrough:
- Entrance and Initial Navigation:
- From the entrance, use the Deku Flower to launch across the poisoned water.
- Proceed through the door to the central chamber.
- Obtaining the Dungeon Map:
- In the central room, look for a Skulltula hanging above a door to the west. Use a Deku Nut to stun it, then enter the door.
- Inside, defeat the two Dragonflies (use Deku Bubbles) to make a chest appear. Open it for the Dungeon Map.
- Finding the Compass:
- Return to the central room. As Deku Link, fly to the platform with the unlit torch.
- Light the torch using a Deku Stick (ignite it from another torch) or a Fire Arrow (if you have it from a previous cycle). This opens a door.
- Enter and defeat the two Snappers (wait for them to expose their soft underbellies, then hit with a Deku Bubble or sword). A chest containing the Compass will appear.
- Activating the First Switch and Acquiring the Hero's Bow:
- In the central room, fly to the north side and activate the Deku Flower switch. This will raise the central platform.
- Navigate to the room with the spinning flower (east side). Use the flower to launch yourself to the upper ledge.
- Defeat the two Dragonflies here. A chest will appear containing the Hero's Bow. This item is crucial for hitting distant switches and enemies.
- Mini-Boss: Gekko and Mad Jelly:
- After obtaining the Hero's Bow, proceed to the next area. You'll encounter the Mini-Boss, Gekko.
- Strategy: As Deku Link, shoot Gekko with a Deku Bubble when he's vulnerable. When he retreats into the Mad Jelly on the ceiling, quickly switch to human Link and use a Bomb or Deku Nut to destroy the jelly, exposing Gekko again. Repeat this process until he is defeated.
- Reward: Defeating Gekko causes a chest to appear containing the Boss Key.
- Reaching the Boss Chamber:
- With the Boss Key in hand, navigate back to the central chamber.
- Use the Deku Flowers and raised platforms to reach the door leading to the boss.
- Unlock the door and prepare for the final confrontation.
- Boss: Odolwa:
- For a detailed strategy, please refer to the Odolwa Boss Strategy section.
- Key Weaknesses: Deku Nuts (stun), Deku Spin Attack (damage), Sword (human Link, damage).
- Recommended Loadout: Deku Mask, Hero's Bow, Bombs/Deku Nuts.
Common Pitfalls & Tips:
- Poisoned Water: Avoid the poisoned water as human Link; it drains health quickly. Use Deku Link's ability to hover over it.
- Deku Sticks: Always have a few Deku Sticks on hand for lighting torches.
- Deku Nuts: Useful for stunning enemies, especially the Skulltula guarding the map.
- Time Management: Woodfall Temple is relatively short, but keep an eye on the clock. If you're struggling, play the Song of Time to reset and try again with more preparation.
Snowhead Temple
Located in the perpetually frozen Snowhead Mountain, this dungeon is a vertical maze requiring precise platforming and the strategic use of your Goron abilities. The goal is to thaw the mountain and lift the curse of the eternal winter plaguing the Gorons.
Key Information:
- Location: Snowhead Mountain, accessible after obtaining the Goron Mask and learning the Goron Lullaby.
- Required Mask: Goron Mask (essential for navigating the dungeon and boss battle).
- Primary Objective: Defeat Goht and restore warmth to Snowhead.
- Reward: Heart Container, Goht's Remains (granting the second Giant's Mask), and the thawing of Snowhead.
Walkthrough:
- Entrance and Initial Navigation:
- From the main entrance, roll up the ramp as Goron Link, smashing through ice blocks.
- You'll enter a large central chamber with a massive pillar.
- Obtaining the Dungeon Map:
- In the large central room, smash the ice blocks on the ground floor. One path leads to a small room with a chest containing the Dungeon Map.
- Finding the Compass:
- After activating the first switch that raises the central pillar (usually by Goron Pounding a floor switch), roll up the newly accessible ramp.
- Enter the door on the second floor. Navigate the platforms, using Goron Link's pound to activate switches and break ice. The Compass is in a chest after a series of ice block puzzles.
- Acquiring Fire Arrows:
- The central pillar needs to be raised multiple times. Each time, new paths become accessible.
- After raising the central pillar to its highest point, enter the door on the top floor.
- You'll face a series of ice-based puzzles and enemies. Eventually, you'll encounter a Wizrobe Mini-Boss.
- Mini-Boss: Wizrobe (First Encounter): This magical foe teleports around the room, firing ice blasts. Use your Hero's Bow to hit him when he appears. He has several warp pads; learn his pattern.
- Reward: Defeating this Wizrobe grants you the Fire Arrows. These are crucial for melting ice and lighting torches throughout the dungeon.
- Obtaining the Boss Key:
- Return to the central room. Use your newly acquired Fire Arrows to melt the large ice block on the ground floor, revealing a hidden passage.
- Follow this path, solving more ice puzzles (often involving melting specific blocks or lighting torches with Fire Arrows).
- You'll eventually reach a room with a chest containing the Boss Key.
- Reaching the Boss Chamber:
- With the Boss Key, navigate to the highest accessible door in the central chamber.
- Unlock the door and prepare for the final confrontation.
- Boss: Goht:
- For a detailed strategy, please refer to the Goht Boss Strategy section.
- Key Weaknesses: Goron Roll (ramming), Fire Arrows (melting ice, stunning), Sword (human Link, damage).
- Recommended Loadout: Goron Mask, Hero's Bow, Fire Arrows, Bombs.
Common Pitfalls & Tips:
- Goron Roll Control: Mastering Goron Link's rolling ability is key. Use the control stick to steer and the A button to boost.
- Ice Blocks: Many ice blocks can be smashed with Goron Link's punch or Goron Pound. Others require Fire Arrows to melt.
- Magic Meter: Fire Arrows consume magic. Keep an eye on your magic meter and collect green pots if needed.
- Pillar Raising: The central pillar's height dictates which doors are accessible. You'll need to raise it multiple times by activating floor switches.
Great Bay Temple
This aquatic dungeon, found beneath the Great Bay, is a complex network of underwater currents and water-flow puzzles. You'll need to manipulate water pressure and direction to progress. Your Zora form is indispensable here, allowing you to swim freely and utilize special abilities.
Key Information:
- Location: Great Bay, accessible after obtaining the Zora Mask and learning the New Wave Bossa Nova.
- Required Mask: Zora Mask (essential for navigating the dungeon and boss battle).
- Primary Objective: Defeat Gyorg and restore the clear water to Great Bay.
- Reward: Heart Container, Gyorg's Remains (granting the third Giant's Mask), and the purification of Great Bay.
Walkthrough:
- Entrance and Initial Navigation:
- From the entrance, swim through the first room, getting accustomed to Zora Link's swimming controls.
- You'll arrive in a large central chamber with a massive rotating propeller and multiple pipes.
- Obtaining the Dungeon Map:
- In the large central chamber, swim to the north side. Look for a small passage (often indicated by a current) leading to a room.
- Inside, you'll find a chest containing the Dungeon Map.
- Manipulating Water Flow and Finding the Compass:
- The core mechanic of this dungeon involves activating four colored switches (red, yellow, green, blue) to change the direction and flow of water through the pipes.
- Activate the first water pump (often the red one) by hitting its switch. This will change the water level or current in certain areas.
- Swim to the upper level of the central chamber, often by riding a newly created current. The Compass is in a chest on a platform here.
- Acquiring the Hookshot:
- Continue activating the colored switches in sequence, manipulating the water flow to open new paths and raise/lower water levels.
- You'll navigate a series of underwater tunnels and rooms. One path will lead you to a room with a large chest.
- Open the chest to obtain the Hookshot. This invaluable tool allows you to grapple to specific targets (Hookshot targets) and reach previously inaccessible areas.
- Mini-Boss: Wart:
- After obtaining the Hookshot, you'll encounter the Mini-Boss, Wart, in a circular room.
- Strategy: As Zora Link, use your boomerang fins (B button) to destroy the bubbles protecting his central eye. Once the eye is exposed, hit it with your Zora Boomerang or sword. Be careful of his bouncing attacks.
- Reward: Defeating Wart causes a chest to appear, often containing a key or opening a path.
- Obtaining the Boss Key:
- Use the Hookshot to reach new areas and activate the final water pump/switch. This will often involve grappling to overhead targets or across gaps.
- This manipulation of the water flow will lead you to a room with the Boss Key.
- Reaching the Boss Chamber:
- With the Boss Key, navigate to the final boss door, usually located in the deepest part of the dungeon.
- Unlock the door and prepare for the final confrontation.
- Boss: Gyorg:
- For a detailed strategy, please refer to the Gyorg Boss Strategy section.
- Key Weaknesses: Zora Boomerang/Electric Barrier (stunning), Sword (human Link, damage).
- Recommended Loadout: Zora Mask, Hookshot, Bombs/Arrows.
Common Pitfalls & Tips:
- Water Flow Puzzles: Pay close attention to the direction of the water flow and the color of the pipes. Each switch changes the flow in a specific way.
- Zora Abilities: Master Zora Link's electric barrier (hold B), boomerang fins (tap B), and fast swimming.
- Air Pockets: As Zora Link, you can stay underwater indefinitely. As human Link, you'll need to find air pockets or surfaces to breathe.
- Currents: Use currents to your advantage to travel quickly, but be wary of strong currents that push you into danger.
Stone Tower Temple
The final and most challenging dungeon, located in Ikana Canyon, is a masterclass in environmental puzzles and combat. Its unique mechanic involves flipping the entire temple upside down, drastically altering the layout and accessibility of rooms. This dungeon tests all the skills and items you've acquired throughout your journey.
Key Information:
- Location: Ikana Canyon, accessible after obtaining the Garo's Mask and navigating the Ikana Ruins.
- Required Masks: Deku Mask, Goron Mask, Zora Mask (all are essential for various puzzles and combat).
- Required Item: Light Arrows (obtained from the Ikana King).
- Primary Objective: Defeat Twinmold and obtain the final Giant's Mask.
- Reward: Heart Container, Twinmold's Remains (granting the final Giant's Mask).
Walkthrough:
- Entrance and Initial Navigation (Right-side Up):
- From the entrance, you'll immediately notice the inverted statues and unusual architecture.
- Proceed to the first large room, which often contains a central puzzle element.
- Flipping the Temple (First Time) & Dungeon Map:
- In the first large room, look for a sun switch. Use your Light Arrows to activate it.
- This will cause the entire temple to flip upside down! The layout of rooms, gravity, and accessible areas will drastically change.
- After the flip, explore the now-accessible areas. The Dungeon Map is typically found in a chest in a newly revealed room.
- Navigating the Inverted Temple & Finding the Compass:
- You'll need to utilize all three transformation masks (Deku, Goron, Zora) to navigate the inverted temple.
- Deku Link can fly upwards (which is now downwards relative to the original structure), Goron Link can roll on ceilings (now floors), and Zora Link can swim in inverted water.
- After flipping the temple again (or navigating through a significant portion of the inverted structure), the Compass is in a chest in a room that was previously inaccessible or difficult to reach.
- Mini-Bosses and Key Item Acquisition:
- Stone Tower Temple features multiple challenging mini-bosses, often requiring specific masks or items to defeat.
- Garo Master: Encountered early on. Use your sword to parry his attacks, then strike when he's vulnerable.
- Wizrobe: Similar to Snowhead, but often in more challenging environments or requiring specific forms to reach. Use Hero's Bow or Fire Arrows.
- Eyegore: Requires Light Arrows to stun its eye, then sword attacks. Be quick, as its eye closes.
- Acquiring the Giant's Mask: This crucial mask is found within the dungeon itself, not as a boss reward. It's located in a chest after a series of challenging puzzles, often requiring you to switch between forms and utilize the flipped environment. It's absolutely essential for the final boss battle.
- Obtaining the Boss Key:
- The Boss Key is obtained after defeating the final mini-boss and solving a complex puzzle involving the temple's inversion. This often involves using Light Arrows to activate switches that open the path to the key.
- Reaching the Boss Chamber:
- With the Boss Key and the Giant's Mask, navigate to the final boss door. This often involves a final flip of the temple or a long descent/ascent.
- Unlock the door and prepare for the ultimate confrontation.
- Boss: Twinmold:
- For a detailed strategy, please refer to the Twinmold Boss Strategy section.
- Key Weaknesses: Giant's Mask (enlarged sword attacks), Arrows (targeting specific body parts).
- Recommended Loadout: Giant's Mask, Hero's Bow, Light Arrows, Magic Beans (for magic restoration).
Common Pitfalls & Tips:
- Temple Flipping: Understand that flipping the temple changes everything. What was a floor becomes a ceiling, and vice-versa. This affects enemy placement, item locations, and puzzle solutions.
- Magic Management: Light Arrows and the Giant's Mask consume magic. Keep your magic meter full by collecting green pots or using Green Potions.
- Transformation Mask Usage: You'll constantly be switching between Link's forms. Practice quick mask changes.
- Puzzles: Stone Tower Temple's puzzles are the most intricate. Don't be afraid to experiment with different masks and items in both orientations of the temple.
- Fairies: Collect all 15 Stray Fairies in this dungeon for a significant reward (Great Fairy's Blessing).
Boss Strategies
This section provides detailed strategies for defeating each of the major dungeon bosses. For general dungeon navigation, please refer to the individual dungeon overviews.
Odolwa (Woodfall Temple)
Odolwa is the masked tribal warrior who has cursed the Woodfall region. He is agile and uses a variety of attacks, but his patterns are predictable.
- Phase 1: Ground Combat
- Deku Nuts: As human Link, throw Deku Nuts at Odolwa to stun him. This is his primary weakness.
- Sword Attack: While he is stunned, rush in and attack him with your sword. A spin attack can deal significant damage.
- Dodging: Watch out for his sword slashes, spinning attacks, and charges. Roll or backflip to avoid them.
- Fire Arrows (Optional): If you have Fire Arrows (from a previous cycle), they can also stun him temporarily.
- Phase 2: Deku Flower Aerial Attack (Alternative/Primary Strategy)
- Deku Mask: Transform into Deku Link.
- Deku Flowers: Use the Deku Flowers located around the arena to launch yourself into the air.
- Deku Nut Drop: While airborne, target Odolwa and drop Deku Nuts on his head. This will stun him.
- Deku Spin Attack: Immediately after stunning him with a Deku Nut, land near him and use Deku Link's Spin Attack (hold B, release). This deals considerable damage.
- Bomb Flowers: Odolwa may summon Bomb Flowers. If he does, pick one up (as human Link) and throw it at him when he's vulnerable.
- Attacks to Watch For:
- Sword Slashes: Basic melee attacks.
- Spinning Attack: He spins rapidly across the arena.
- Charge: He will charge directly at Link.
- Summoned Enemies: He may summon moths or other small enemies. Deal with them quickly or ignore them if focusing on Odolwa.
- Falling Bombs/Fire: He can summon bombs or fire from above. Keep moving.
- Recommended Strategy: The most consistent strategy is to use Deku Link. Launch from a Deku Flower, drop a Deku Nut to stun, then follow up with a Deku Spin Attack. Repeat until defeated.
- Reward: Heart Container, Odolwa's Remains.
Goht (Snowhead Temple)
Goht is a massive, mechanical bull that races around a circular arena. This battle is a high-speed chase where Goron Link shines.
- Phase 1: The Chase
- Goron Mask: Immediately transform into Goron Link.
- Roll and Boost: Begin rolling and chase after Goht. Use the A button to boost your speed.
- Ramming: Aim to ram into Goht's legs and body. Each successful hit will cause him to stumble and eventually fall.
- Obstacles: Goht will drop bombs, rocks, and ice blocks. Avoid these as they will slow you down or damage you. Use your Goron Roll to smash through smaller obstacles.
- Fire Arrows: When Goht is running, you can switch to human Link (if you can get close enough) and shoot Fire Arrows at his face to stun him briefly, allowing Goron Link to catch up. This is more effective in the 3DS version.
- Phase 2: Vulnerable State
- Goht Falls: Once you've rammed him enough, Goht will fall to the ground, stunned.
- Switch to Human Link: Quickly revert to human Link.
- Target the Eye: Run up to Goht's head and slash his exposed eye with your sword. A spin attack is ideal.
- Repeat: Goht will eventually recover and resume his race. Repeat the chase and attack phases until he is defeated.
- Attacks to Watch For:
- Kicks: If you get too close to his legs without boosting, he might kick you.
- Falling Debris: Bombs, rocks, and ice blocks he leaves behind.
- Lightning: He can summon lightning bolts from above.
- Ice Breath: He may stop and breathe ice, creating a frozen barrier. Use Fire Arrows to melt it if needed.
- Recommended Strategy: Stay in Goron Link and continuously boost, ramming into Goht. Only switch to human Link when he's down to attack his eye. Keep your magic meter full for boosting.
- Reward: Heart Container, Goht's Remains.
Gyorg (Great Bay Temple)
Gyorg is a giant, monstrous fish that inhabits the murky waters of the Great Bay Temple. This battle takes place on a central platform surrounded by water.
- Phase 1: Platform Combat
- Zora Mask: Transform into Zora Link.
- Electric Barrier: Gyorg will swim around the central platform. When he surfaces, quickly use Zora Link's electric barrier (hold B button) to stun him.
- Platform Attack: While Gyorg is stunned on the surface, jump onto the central platform (as human Link or Zora Link) and slash him with your sword.
- Mines: Gyorg will occasionally release mines. Destroy them with your Zora Boomerang or avoid them.
- Tongue Attack: If you're on the platform, Gyorg might try to bite or lash out with his tongue. Dodge by rolling.
- Phase 2: Underwater Chase (More prominent in 3DS version)
- Submerged Attack: After taking enough damage, Gyorg will become more aggressive and try to swallow Link whole if he falls into the water.
- Underwater Combat: If you fall in, quickly activate Zora Link's electric barrier and swim towards Gyorg's mouth when he opens it. The barrier will damage him from the inside.
- Zora Boomerang: You can also try to hit him with your Zora Boomerang while underwater, but the electric barrier is more reliable for damage.
- Piranhas: Gyorg may release schools of piranhas. Deal with them using your electric barrier or Zora Boomerang.
- Attacks to Watch For:
- Bite/Tongue Lash: When on the platform.
- Mines: Released into the water.
- Swallowing: His most dangerous attack if you're in the water.
- Piranhas: Summoned in the water.
- Recommended Strategy: Stay on the central platform as much as possible. When Gyorg surfaces, stun him with the electric barrier, then quickly switch to human Link for sword slashes. If you fall in, use the electric barrier to damage him from inside his mouth.
- Reward: Heart Container, Gyorg's Remains.
Twinmold (Stone Tower Temple)
Twinmold consists of two giant, segmented worms (one red, one blue) that fly around a vast, sandy arena. This battle requires the use of the Giant's Mask.
- Phase 1: Attacking the Red Twinmold
- Giant's Mask: Immediately put on the Giant's Mask to become enormous. This is crucial for dealing damage.
- Target Red Twinmold: Focus on the red Twinmold first, as it is generally more aggressive.
- Sword Attacks: As Giant Link, use your massive sword to slash at the red Twinmold's body segments or head.
- Dodging: The Twinmolds will fly around, attempting to ram you or whip you with their tails. Roll or run to avoid their attacks.
- Magic Meter: The Giant's Mask continuously drains your magic meter. Keep an eye on it and collect green pots or use Green Potions if needed. If your magic runs out, you'll revert to normal Link.
- Phase 2: Attacking the Blue Twinmold
- Repeat Strategy: Once the red Twinmold is defeated, focus your attacks on the blue Twinmold.
- Blue Twinmold's Attacks: The blue Twinmold often flies higher and may drop rocks. Use your sword to destroy the rocks or avoid them.
- Arrows (Optional): If you run out of magic or prefer a ranged approach, you can try hitting their eyes with arrows, but this is less effective than Giant Link's sword.
- Attacks to Watch For:
- Ramming: Both Twinmolds will try to fly into you.
- Tail Whip: They can whip you with their tails if you're too close.
- Falling Rocks: The blue Twinmold often drops rocks.
- Sand Traps: The arena has quicksand areas; avoid getting stuck.
- Recommended Strategy: Stay in Giant Link form for the entire battle. Prioritize the red Twinmold, then the blue. Continuously attack with your sword, focusing on their heads or body segments. Manage your magic meter carefully.
- Reward: Heart Container, Twinmold's Remains.
