Accessing Ikana Canyon

Ikana Canyon, a desolate and ancient land, holds the key to confronting the fourth and final Giant. Reaching this mysterious region requires several key items and a bit of musical prowess. This comprehensive guide will walk you through every step, ensuring a smooth journey to the heart of Ikana.

Prerequisites for Entry

Before you can even think about setting foot in Ikana Canyon, you'll need to acquire two essential items:

  • Hookshot: This invaluable tool is obtained from the Great Bay Temple after defeating the Gyorg boss. It allows Link to grapple onto specific targets, making otherwise impassable gaps traversable.
  • Song of Storms: A powerful melody that can alter the weather. This song is crucial for dispelling a magical barrier blocking the path to Ikana Canyon.

Step-by-Step Guide to Ikana Canyon

1. Obtaining the Hookshot (If You Haven't Already)

If you haven't yet acquired the Hookshot, your first destination is the Great Bay Temple. This temple is located in the Great Bay region, accessible after completing the Zora's Domain questline and obtaining the Zora Mask. Navigate through the temple, solve its water-based puzzles, and defeat the boss, Gyorg. Upon its defeat, you will be rewarded with the Hookshot.

2. Journey to the Ikana Graveyard

With the Hookshot in hand, your next objective is the Ikana Graveyard. This area is situated directly east of Clock Town.

  1. Exit Clock Town: Head through the East Clock Town exit.
  2. Cross the River: You'll encounter a wide river separating you from the Ikana Graveyard. Equip your Hookshot. Look for a large, gnarled tree stump or a specific wooden target on the opposite bank. Aim your Hookshot at this target and fire. Link will grapple across, pulling himself to the other side.
  3. Enter the Graveyard: Once across the river, follow the path directly into the Ikana Graveyard.
3. Learning the Song of Storms

The Ikana Graveyard is not just a waypoint; it's where you'll learn the Song of Storms, a critical melody for your journey.

  1. Locate the Stalchild: Enter the Ikana Graveyard during the night (any night will do). Head towards the back of the graveyard, near the large tombstone. You will find a lone Stalchild (a skeleton enemy) standing guard.
  2. Play the Song of Healing: Approach the Stalchild. It will appear distressed. Play the Song of Healing (C-Left, C-Right, C-Down) for it.
  3. Learn the Song of Storms: Upon hearing the Song of Healing, the Stalchild will be pacified and will teach Link the Song of Storms (A, C-Down, C-Up, A, C-Down, C-Up). This song will be added to your Ocarina repertoire.
4. Dispelling the Curse and Entering Ikana Canyon

With the Song of Storms learned, you can now open the path to Ikana Canyon.

  1. Find Sharp's Tomb: Within the Ikana Graveyard, locate the largest tombstone. This is the resting place of Sharp, one of the Ikana Royal Family's composers.
  2. Encounter Sharp: Approach the tombstone. Sharp's ghost will emerge, lamenting his fate and the curse placed upon Ikana. He will play a haunting tune that drains Link's health.
  3. Play the Song of Storms: While Sharp is playing his curse-inducing melody, quickly play the Song of Storms. This powerful song will break Sharp's curse, restoring his sanity and dispelling the magical barrier that blocks the entrance to Ikana Canyon.
  4. Enter Ikana Canyon: With the curse lifted, the path behind Sharp's tomb will now be open. Proceed through this newly accessible area to finally enter Ikana Canyon.

Important Note on Elegy of Emptiness and Garo's Mask

While exploring Ikana Canyon, you will encounter the need for the Elegy of Emptiness and may find uses for Garo's Mask. It is important to clarify their roles:

  • Elegy of Emptiness: This song is absolutely essential for navigating Ikana Castle and solving its puzzles. You will learn the Elegy of Emptiness from the King of Ikana himself, within Ikana Castle, after defeating the two Garo Master mini-bosses and reaching his throne room.
  • Garo's Mask: This mask is obtained by winning the "Poe Collector's Challenge" in the Curiosity Shop on the Final Day (or by completing the "Madame Aroma's Letter" side quest). In Ikana Canyon, wearing Garo's Mask will cause hidden Garo (ninja-like enemies) to appear. These Garo will provide hints about the area or, in some instances, open up secret passages. However, Garo's Mask is NOT required to learn the Elegy of Emptiness. Its primary use is for exploration and uncovering secrets within the canyon.

With the path to Ikana Canyon now open, prepare yourself for a challenging journey through ancient ruins, spectral enemies, and the secrets of the Ikana Kingdom. Good luck, Link!
