Controls & Camera
Mastering Link's movements and understanding the camera system are crucial for navigating Hyrule and conquering its many challenges. This section breaks down the core controls and offers strategies for effective camera management.
Basic Movement & Interaction
- Analog Stick (N64 Controller): This is your primary input for moving Link. Push it gently for a slow walk, or push it fully to make Link run. Experiment with its sensitivity to gain precise control, especially when traversing narrow ledges or dodging enemy attacks.
- A Button (Action Button): The versatile A Button performs context-sensitive actions.
- Talk/Examine: Stand in front of an NPC or object (like a signpost or a chest) and press A to interact.
- Open Doors: Approach a door and press A.
- Climb: When near a climbable surface (ladders, vines, certain walls), press A to initiate climbing.
- Swim: In water, press A repeatedly to swim faster.
- Roll: While running, press A to perform a forward roll. This can be used to gain a burst of speed, dodge attacks, or even break certain weak objects.
- B Button (Sword Attack): Your primary attack button. Press B to swing Link's Kokiri Sword (or other equipped sword).
- Basic Combo: Press B multiple times for a quick three-hit combo.
- Jump Attack: While running, press Z-Target and then A to perform a powerful jump attack. This is excellent for initiating combat or dealing heavy damage to stationary foes.
- Spin Attack: Rotate the Analog Stick 360 degrees and press B to unleash a wide-area spin attack. Hold B until Link flashes to charge a more powerful version. This is invaluable for clearing groups of Deku Babas or Keese.
Item Usage & Targeting
- C Buttons (C-Up, C-Left, C-Right): These buttons are used to assign and use items from your inventory.
- Assigning Items: Press START to open the menu, navigate to the Item screen, select an item, and choose one of the three C-Buttons to assign it.
- Using Items: Once assigned, press the corresponding C-Button to use the item. For example, press C-Right to fire the Slingshot, or C-Left to throw a Deku Nut.
- Z Button (Z-Targeting): This is arguably the most important control in Ocarina of Time.
- Lock-On: Press and hold Z to lock onto the nearest enemy or interactive object. This centers the camera on your target and allows Link to strafe around it.
- First-Person View: If no target is present, pressing Z will switch to a first-person perspective, allowing you to look around freely. This is essential for aiming items like the Fairy Bow or Hookshot.
- Shield: While Z-Targeting, Link will automatically raise his shield to block incoming attacks. This is crucial for deflecting projectiles from enemies like Deku Scrubs or Iron Knuckles.
Camera Control
The camera in Ocarina of Time is generally dynamic, but you have significant control over it:
- Automatic Camera: In most open areas, the camera will automatically follow Link, providing an optimal view of the environment.
- L Button (Center Camera): Pressing the L Button will quickly snap the camera directly behind Link. This is useful if the automatic camera gets into an awkward position or if you need a quick reset.
- Z Button (First-Person/Targeting): As mentioned, pressing Z without a target allows for manual camera rotation in first-person. This is invaluable for scouting areas, finding hidden secrets, or lining up precise shots with projectile items.
- Strategic Camera Use:
- Dungeon Navigation: In complex dungeons like the Dodongo's Cavern or the Forest Temple, frequently use the L Button to re-center the camera and get your bearings.
- Combat Advantage: Always utilize Z-Targeting during combat. This keeps your enemy in view, allows for strafing, and automatically raises your shield, significantly improving your defensive capabilities.
- Environmental Awareness: Before entering a new area or approaching a dangerous ledge, use the Z Button for a first-person view to scan for enemies, traps, or hidden pathways. This can prevent unnecessary damage or falls.
