Magic Meter & Spells

The Magic Meter is a crucial resource for Link, allowing him to cast powerful spells and utilize certain magical items. Understanding how to acquire, expand, and replenish your magic is key to mastering the challenges of Hyrule.

Acquiring the Magic Meter

Your journey to wield magic begins in the Kokiri Forest, but the Magic Meter itself isn't available until you venture into Death Mountain. To unlock your magical abilities, you must:

  1. Obtain the Goron's Ruby: Progress through Dodongo's Cavern and defeat King Dodongo to earn the Goron's Ruby.
  2. Ascend Death Mountain: With the Goron's Ruby in hand, head towards the summit of Death Mountain.
  3. Visit the Great Fairy's Fountain: Near the summit, you'll find a cracked wall. Use a Bomb or Bomb Flower to destroy it, revealing the entrance to the Great Fairy's Fountain.
  4. Learn the Spin Attack and Receive the Magic Meter: Inside, play Zelda's Lullaby on your Ocarina to summon the Great Fairy of Magic. She will bestow upon you the Magic Meter and teach you the powerful Spin Attack, which consumes a small amount of magic.

Expanding Your Magic Meter (Double Magic)

For the most demanding spells and prolonged magical combat, you'll want to double the size of your Magic Meter. This significant upgrade is also granted by a Great Fairy:

  1. Acquire the Master Sword: You must first pull the Master Sword from its pedestal in the Temple of Time, becoming an adult Link.
  2. Travel to Death Mountain Crater: As adult Link, warp to the Death Mountain Crater using the Bolero of Fire.
  3. Locate the Great Fairy's Fountain: Near the entrance to the Fire Temple, look for a large boulder blocking a cave entrance. Use a Megaton Hammer to smash it.
  4. Receive Double Magic: Enter the fountain and play Zelda's Lullaby to summon the Great Fairy of Wisdom. She will double the capacity of your Magic Meter, allowing you to cast spells twice as often.

Replenishing Your Magic

Keeping your Magic Meter full is essential. Here are the primary methods for restoring your magic:

  • Green Potions: These can be purchased from various shops (e.g., Kakariko Village Potion Shop) or found in chests. Keep a few bottled for emergencies.
  • Magic Jars: Small green jars dropped by defeated enemies or found in breakable pots will restore a small amount of magic. Large green jars restore a significant portion.
  • Great Fairy's Fountain (Death Mountain): The Great Fairy at the Death Mountain summit will fully restore your magic and health if you visit her.
  • Great Fairy's Fountain (Zora's Fountain): After acquiring the Zora's Sapphire, you can access another Great Fairy's Fountain behind Zora's Domain. This Great Fairy will also fully restore your magic and health.

Available Spells and Their Uses

Ocarina of Time features three primary offensive and defensive spells, each with unique applications and magic costs. You'll learn these from specific Great Fairies located across Hyrule.

Farore's Wind

  • Location: Inside the Great Fairy's Fountain in Zora's Fountain. To access this, you'll need the Zora's Sapphire and the ability to dive (Silver Scale). The entrance is behind the waterfall in Zora's Domain, then through a hidden passage in Zora's Fountain. Use a Bomb to open the wall.
  • Magic Cost: 1/4 of your Magic Meter (or 1/8 with Double Magic) to set a warp point, and another 1/4 (or 1/8) to warp back.
  • Strategy: Farore's Wind allows Link to set a warp point within a dungeon and return to it at will. This is incredibly useful for backtracking to heal, save, or retrieve an item, then instantly returning to your progress. It's also invaluable for puzzles that require repeated trips between areas.

Din's Fire

  • Location: Inside the Great Fairy's Fountain on Hyrule Field, near Hyrule Castle. As Young Link, use a Bomb to destroy the cracked wall near the entrance to Hyrule Castle Town Market.
  • Magic Cost: 1/4 of your Magic Meter (or 1/8 with Double Magic).
  • Strategy: Din's Fire creates a powerful burst of flame around Link, damaging all nearby enemies and lighting torches. It's excellent for clearing out groups of weaker foes, activating multiple torches simultaneously (e.g., in the Forest Temple), or solving puzzles that require fire (e.g., melting ice blocks). Be mindful of its magic cost, as it can deplete your meter quickly if overused.

Nayru's Love

  • Location: Inside the Great Fairy's Fountain in the Desert Colossus. As Adult Link, you'll need the Requiem of Spirit to warp directly to the Desert Colossus, or navigate the Haunted Wasteland with the Hover Boots. The fountain is located on the eastern side of the Desert Colossus.
  • Magic Cost: 1/2 of your Magic Meter (or 1/4 with Double Magic).
  • Strategy: Nayru's Love grants Link temporary invincibility, making him immune to all damage for a short period. While expensive, this spell is a lifesaver during challenging boss battles (e.g., Twinrova, Ganondorf) or when navigating areas with heavy enemy presence or environmental hazards. Activate it just before taking a hit or entering a dangerous encounter to maximize its benefit.
