Mini-Games

Beyond the epic quest to save Hyrule, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time offers several engaging mini-games. These diversions provide opportunities to earn valuable items, Rupees, and even Pieces of Heart. Mastering them can significantly aid Link on his journey.

Shooting Gallery (Market)

Located in Hyrule Market, this classic shooting gallery tests your aim with the Slingshot (as Young Link) or the Fairy Bow (as Adult Link).

  • Location: Hyrule Market, accessible during the day.
  • Cost: 20 Rupees per attempt.
  • Objective: Shoot all 10 moving targets within the time limit.
  • Young Link Strategy:
    • Use the Slingshot.
    • The targets move in predictable patterns. Focus on anticipating their trajectory.
    • Prioritize targets that are about to disappear or are moving quickly.
    • Reward: If you hit all 10 targets, you'll receive a Deku Seed Bullet Bag upgrade (increasing capacity to 40 seeds) the first time. Subsequent wins earn 50 Rupees.
  • Adult Link Strategy:
    • Use the Fairy Bow.
    • The targets are smaller and faster than in the Young Link version.
    • Practice makes perfect. Learn the patterns and lead your shots.
    • Reward: The first time you hit all 10 targets as Adult Link, you'll receive a Quiver upgrade (increasing capacity to 40 arrows). Subsequent wins earn 50 Rupees.

Bombchu Bowling Alley (Market)

This explosive mini-game is found in Hyrule Market and requires careful timing and aiming of Bombchus.

  • Location: Hyrule Market, accessible during the day.
  • Cost: 30 Rupees per attempt.
  • Objective: Roll Bombchus down a lane to hit a target at the end, avoiding obstacles. You have 10 Bombchus.
  • Strategy:
    • The lane has moving walls and a central block that rotates.
    • Wait for the optimal moment when the path to the target is clear or when you can anticipate an opening.
    • Release the Bombchu by pressing the A button. It will travel in a straight line until it hits an obstacle or explodes after a set time.
    • You need to hit the target three times to win the grand prize.
  • Rewards:
    • First Win: A Piece of Heart.
    • Subsequent Wins: The rewards rotate between a Bomb Bag upgrade (increasing capacity to 30 bombs), Bombchus (5-10), and 50 Rupees. Keep playing to get the Bomb Bag upgrade if you missed it elsewhere.

Gerudo Training Ground

While technically a dungeon-like area, the Gerudo Training Ground functions as a challenging mini-game with a significant reward.

  • Cost: 10 Rupees to enter.
  • Objective: Navigate through a series of seven rooms, each with a unique challenge, to collect all nine Small Keys.

Fishing Pond (Lake Hylia)

Relax and try your luck at catching the biggest fish in Lake Hylia.

  • Location: Lake Hylia, in the fishing hut. Accessible as both Young and Adult Link.
  • Cost: 20 Rupees per attempt.
  • Objective: Catch the heaviest fish possible.
  • Young Link Strategy:
    • Cast your line into the water.
    • Look for shadows of fish. The larger the shadow, the larger the fish.
    • Once a fish bites, reel it in by holding A and rotating the Analog Stick. Be careful not to break the line.
    • The largest fish you can catch as Young Link is usually around 10-12 pounds.
    • Reward: Catching a fish over a certain weight (usually around 10 pounds) will earn you a Piece of Heart.
  • Adult Link Strategy:
    • The biggest fish, the Hylian Loach, is much harder to catch. It often hides in the deeper parts of the pond or near logs.
    • Try casting near the log in the middle or near the lily pads.
    • The Hylian Loach is very strong; be patient and persistent.
    • Reward: Catching the Hylian Loach (often 15+ pounds) will earn you a Golden Scale, allowing you to dive deeper underwater.

Dampe's Race (Graveyard)

A spectral race against the clock and a friendly ghost.

  • Location: Kakariko Village Graveyard.
  • Cost: Free.
  • Objective: As Young Link, race Dampe's ghost through a cave system.
  • Strategy:
    • First Race (Young Link, Night): Talk to Dampe in the graveyard at night. He will challenge you to a race. Follow him closely, but don't get too far ahead or he'll get angry. Use the Hookshot to cross gaps quickly.
    • Reward: If you beat him, he will dig up a Piece of Heart.
    • Second Race (Young Link, Night): After completing the first race, talk to Dampe again. He'll challenge you to another race. This time, he'll lead you to a different cave exit.
    • Reward: If you beat him again, he'll dig up the Hookshot, allowing you to reach new areas.
