Trading Sequence

The Trading Sequence in Ocarina of Time is a series of side quests that rewards Link with powerful items and access to new areas. Unlike some other Zelda titles, Ocarina of Time features two distinct trading sequences: the Biggoron's Sword Quest and the Happy Mask Shop Quest. Both are crucial for 100% completion and offer significant advantages.

Biggoron's Sword Quest

This lengthy and time-sensitive trading sequence ultimately rewards Link with the mighty Biggoron's Sword, a two-handed weapon that deals double the damage of the Master Sword. It's an essential item for tackling the most challenging enemies and bosses. This quest can only be started as Adult Link.

  1. Pocket Egg:
    • Location: Kakariko Village, Cucco Lady's house.
    • Action: Speak to the Cucco Lady. She'll give you a Pocket Egg, asking you to wake up her lazy brother.
  2. Pocket Cucco:
    • Location: Kakariko Village, house to the right of the entrance.
    • Action: Wait for the Pocket Egg to hatch into a Pocket Cucco (approximately one in-game day). Enter the house and use the Pocket Cucco on the sleeping man. He'll wake up and give you the Cojiro.
  3. Cojiro:
    • Location: Lost Woods, near the entrance to the Sacred Forest Meadow.
    • Action: Find the "Lost Woods Man" (a Kokiri boy sitting on a stump). He's suffering from hay fever. Give him the Cojiro, and he'll give you the Odd Mushroom.
    • Important: The Odd Mushroom is time-sensitive! You have 3 minutes to deliver it before it spoils.
  4. Odd Mushroom:
    • Location: Kakariko Village, Potion Shop (behind the fence, near the graveyard entrance).
    • Action: Race to the Potion Shop and give the Odd Mushroom to the old hag inside. She'll brew it into Odd Potion.
    • Important: The Odd Potion is also time-sensitive! You have 3 minutes to deliver it.
  5. Odd Potion:
    • Location: Lost Woods, where you found the Lost Woods Man.
    • Action: Return to the Lost Woods. The Lost Woods Man is gone, but a Kokiri girl is there. Give her the Odd Potion. She'll give you the Poacher's Saw.
  6. Poacher's Saw:
    • Location: Gerudo Valley, near the broken bridge.
    • Action: Find the carpenter sitting near the broken bridge. He's upset about his missing saw. Give him the Poacher's Saw. He'll give you the Broken Goron's Sword.
  7. Broken Goron's Sword:
    • Location: Death Mountain Trail, near the entrance to Goron City.
    • Action: Show the Broken Goron's Sword to Biggoron, who is sitting near the summit of Death Mountain. He'll tell you his eyes are irritated and asks for eye drops. He gives you the Prescription.
  8. Prescription:
    • Location: Zora's Domain, King Zora's Chamber.
    • Action: Show the Prescription to King Zora. He's frozen in red ice. Use Blue Fire (from the Ice Cavern or purchased from the Goron City shop) to unfreeze him. He'll give you the Eyeball Frog.
    • Important: The Eyeball Frog is time-sensitive! You have 3 minutes to deliver it.
  9. Eyeball Frog:
    • Location: Lake Hylia, Lakeside Laboratory.
    • Action: Race to the Lakeside Laboratory and give the Eyeball Frog to the Professor. He'll make the Eye Drops.
    • Important: The Eye Drops are also time-sensitive! You have 4 minutes to deliver them.
  10. Eye Drops:
    • Location: Death Mountain Trail, near the entrance to Goron City.
    • Action: Return to Biggoron and give him the Eye Drops. He'll be grateful and give you the Claim Check.
  11. Claim Check:
    • Location: Death Mountain Trail, near the entrance to Goron City.
    • Action: Wait for a few in-game days (or play the Sun's Song several times) for Biggoron to finish forging your new sword. Show him the Claim Check, and he'll give you the Biggoron's Sword!

Happy Mask Shop Quest

The Happy Mask Shop quest is a shorter, less demanding trading sequence that unlocks the ability to borrow and sell various masks. While not as critical for combat as Biggoron's Sword, it's necessary for completing certain side quests and obtaining a piece of heart.

To begin, you must first complete the "Mask of Truth" side quest by showing the Mask of Truth to the Gossip Stone in Hyrule Castle Town Market. Once you've done this, the Happy Mask Shop will open.

  1. Keaton Mask:
    • Location: Happy Mask Shop, Hyrule Castle Town Market.
    • Action: Borrow the Keaton Mask.
    • Sale: Sell it to the guard at the entrance to Death Mountain Trail (Kakariko Village side) for 10 rupees. Return to the Happy Mask Shop and pay back the 10 rupees.
  2. Skull Mask:
    • Location: Happy Mask Shop, Hyrule Castle Town Market.
    • Action: Borrow the Skull Mask.
    • Sale: Sell it to the Skull Kid in the Lost Woods (the one who plays the flute) for 20 rupees. Return to the Happy Mask Shop and pay back the 20 rupees.
  3. Spooky Mask:
    • Location: Happy Mask Shop, Hyrule Castle Town Market.
    • Action: Borrow the Spooky Mask.
    • Sale: Sell it to the boy in Kakariko Village graveyard (during the day) for 30 rupees. Return to the Happy Mask Shop and pay back the 30 rupees.
  4. Bunny Hood:
    • Location: Happy Mask Shop, Hyrule Castle Town Market.
    • Action: Borrow the Bunny Hood.
    • Sale: Sell it to the Running Man (the marathon runner) in Hyrule Field (he runs between Hyrule Castle Town and Lon Lon Ranch) for 500 rupees. Return to the Happy Mask Shop and pay back the 500 rupees.
    • Reward: After selling the Bunny Hood, the Happy Mask Shop will allow you to borrow any of the four masks at any time, free of charge.
