Great Fairy Fountains & Upgrades
Throughout your adventure in Hyrule, you'll encounter mystical Great Fairies who bestow powerful upgrades upon Link. These upgrades are essential for overcoming the challenges ahead and often require a specific item or action to access. There are a total of four Great Fairy Fountains in Ocarina of Time, each offering a unique magical ability or enhancement.
General Strategy for Great Fairy Fountains
To awaken a Great Fairy, you must typically stand on the Triforce symbol in front of her fountain and play Zelda's Lullaby. Be prepared for a short cutscene and a dazzling display of magic!
Great Fairy Fountain Locations and Upgrades
1. Hyrule Castle Trail - Din's Fire
- Location: After navigating the Hyrule Castle Trail and sneaking past the guards, you'll reach a dead end with a large boulder.
- Requirements: You'll need a Bomb or Bomb Flower to destroy the boulder blocking the entrance. If you don't have Bombs yet, return after completing Dodongo's Cavern.
- Walkthrough:
- As Young Link, travel to Hyrule Castle Trail.
- Proceed through the area where you previously snuck past guards.
- At the very end of the path, you'll see a large, cracked boulder.
- Place a Bomb next to the boulder (or use a Bomb Flower found nearby if available) and detonate it to reveal a hidden cave.
- Enter the cave and stand on the Triforce symbol.
- Play Zelda's Lullaby on your Ocarina.
- The Great Fairy will emerge and grant you Din's Fire, a powerful magic spell that creates a burst of flame around Link, useful for lighting torches or damaging multiple enemies.
2. Death Mountain Trail - Farore's Wind
- Location: Near the summit of Death Mountain, just before entering the crater.
- Requirements: You'll need Bombs or the Megaton Hammer (as Adult Link) to open the path. Access to Death Mountain requires obtaining the Goron's Bracelet (Young Link) or defeating Volvagia (Adult Link).
- Walkthrough:
- As Young Link, climb Death Mountain Trail past Goron City.
- Just before the entrance to Death Mountain Crater, look for a cracked wall on the side of the mountain.
- Use a Bomb to destroy the wall, revealing the entrance to the Great Fairy Fountain.
- Enter the cave and stand on the Triforce symbol.
- Play Zelda's Lullaby on your Ocarina.
- The Great Fairy will appear and teach you Farore's Wind, a magic spell that allows you to set a warp point within a dungeon and return to it instantly. This is incredibly useful for backtracking!
3. Zora's Fountain - Nayru's Love
- Location: Behind the waterfall in Zora's Fountain, accessible after unfreezing King Zora.
- Requirements: As Adult Link, you must have the Iron Boots and the Zora Tunic to survive underwater and reach the entrance. You'll also need to have unfrozen King Zora to access the area behind him.
- Walkthrough:
- As Adult Link, travel to Zora's Domain and proceed to Zora's Fountain.
- Equip the Iron Boots and the Zora Tunic.
- Dive into the water near the waterfall where Lord Jabu-Jabu used to be.
- Swim to the very bottom and look for an underwater tunnel behind the waterfall.
- Follow the tunnel until you emerge in a hidden grotto with the Great Fairy Fountain.
- Stand on the Triforce symbol and play Zelda's Lullaby.
- The Great Fairy will grant you Nayru's Love, a magic spell that makes Link temporarily invincible, absorbing all damage. This is a fantastic defensive ability for tough boss fights.
4. Ganon's Castle - Magic Meter Upgrade & Double Defense
- Location: There are two Great Fairy Fountains located just outside Ganon's Castle in Hyrule Castle Town Ruins (as Adult Link).
- Requirements: Both require the Megaton Hammer to break the large boulders blocking their entrances.
- Walkthrough (First Fountain - Magic Meter Upgrade):
- As Adult Link, travel to the Hyrule Castle Town Ruins.
- Head towards the entrance of Ganon's Castle.
- To the left of the main entrance, you'll see a large, dark boulder blocking a cave entrance.
- Equip the Megaton Hammer and smash the boulder.
- Enter the cave and stand on the Triforce symbol.
- Play Zelda's Lullaby.
- The Great Fairy will appear and upgrade your Magic Meter, doubling its capacity. This is crucial for using your magic spells more frequently.
- Walkthrough (Second Fountain - Double Defense):
- From the first Great Fairy Fountain outside Ganon's Castle, head to the right side of the main entrance.
- You'll find another large, dark boulder blocking a similar cave entrance.
- Use the Megaton Hammer to smash this boulder.
- Enter the cave and stand on the Triforce symbol.
- Play Zelda's Lullaby.
- The Great Fairy here will bestow upon you the Double Defense upgrade, significantly reducing the damage Link takes from enemies. This is arguably the most powerful defensive upgrade in the game and highly recommended before facing Ganon.
