Overworld Exploration
Hyrule Field is the vast central hub of Ocarina of Time, connecting many of the game's crucial locations. Mastering its traversal and secrets is key to your adventure. This section will guide you through efficient exploration, item acquisition, and hidden pathways.
Hyrule Field: The Central Hub
Upon exiting Kokiri Forest, you'll find yourself in the sprawling Hyrule Field. This area is initially safe during the day, but beware of Stalchildren that emerge at night! They are easily dispatched with your Kokiri Sword, but can be a nuisance. Your primary goal here is to reach Hyrule Castle Town.
Key Locations & Initial Paths:
- Hyrule Castle Town: Located directly north from the Kokiri Forest exit. Follow the main path. This is your first major destination.
- Lon Lon Ranch: To the west of Hyrule Field. You'll see a distinctive archway leading to the ranch. You can visit early, but many of its secrets are for later in the game.
- Kakariko Village: To the northeast, past Hyrule Castle Town. You won't be able to access it directly until you've progressed through the initial story beats in Castle Town.
- Lost Woods Entrance: The path leading back to Kokiri Forest is also the entrance to the Lost Woods, which holds its own set of challenges and rewards.
Early Game Exploration & Item Acquisition
Getting to Hyrule Castle Town:
- From the Kokiri Forest exit, head straight north.
- You'll eventually see a large drawbridge. This is the entrance to Hyrule Castle Town.
- Wait for the drawbridge to lower during the day. If it's night, you'll have to wait until dawn or use the Sun's Song (acquired later) to change the time.
Hidden Grottos & Collectibles:
Hyrule Field is dotted with hidden grottos, often marked by a circle of stones or a lone boulder. Use a Bomb (once acquired) to reveal these entrances. Early on, you can find:
- Bombchu Grotto (South Hyrule Field): Near the path leading to Lon Lon Ranch, look for a circle of stones. Bomb the center to reveal a grotto containing a chest with Bombchus. These are excellent for early ranged attacks and puzzle solving.
- Business Scrub Grotto (East Hyrule Field): East of Hyrule Castle Town's entrance, near a lone tree. Bomb the ground to find a Business Scrub selling a Piece of Heart for 10 Rupees.
- Heart Piece under a Boulder (North Hyrule Field): Near the entrance to Kakariko Village (before you can access it), there's a large boulder. Once you have the Goron's Bracelet (acquired from Goron City), you can lift this boulder to find a Piece of Heart.
Navigating Hyrule Field at Night
As mentioned, Stalchildren appear at night. While not overly dangerous, they can be annoying. If you're low on health or just want to avoid combat, consider these strategies:
- Stay on the Path: Stalchildren tend to spawn more frequently off the main roads. Sticking to the paved paths can reduce encounters.
- Roll Through: Repeatedly rolling (A button while moving) provides a brief invulnerability window and allows for faster movement, helping you bypass enemies.
- Seek Shelter: If you're near a town or dungeon entrance, duck inside to reset the time to day, or simply wait out the night in a safe zone.
Future Considerations (Adult Link):
Once you become Adult Link, Hyrule Field changes significantly. Epona, your trusty steed, becomes indispensable for quick travel and avoiding the more dangerous enemies like Peahats and Iron Knuckles that appear. Remember to learn Epona's Song at Lon Lon Ranch as Young Link to call her later!
