This section provides detailed, actionable walkthroughs for each major dungeon in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Prepare to conquer puzzles, defeat formidable foes, and claim the artifacts necessary to save the land.
Inside the Deku Tree
Your very first foray into true dungeon crawling, the Deku Tree serves as an excellent introduction to 3D Zelda mechanics. Don't let its initial simplicity fool you; there are still secrets to uncover and a boss to defeat!
- Objective: Obtain the Kokiri's Emerald.
- Key Items: Slingshot, Deku Shield.
- Walkthrough:
- Upon entering, speak with the Deku Tree Sprout.
- Proceed through the main chamber. You'll encounter your first Deku Baba. Defeat it to gain a Deku Stick.
- Climb the vines on the right wall to reach the upper platform.
- Navigate across the platforms, defeating more Deku Babas.
- Drop down through the hole in the center of the room.
- In the basement, light the two torches with a Deku Stick to open the door.
- Defeat the two Skulltulas in the next room.
- Push the block onto the floor switch to open the gate.
- In the room with the water, activate the switch by diving into the water and pressing 'A' near it. This will raise the water level.
- Swim across and climb out. Open the chest to find the Dungeon Map.
- Return to the previous room, drop the water level, and proceed through the newly opened path.
- You'll find yourself in a room with a large spiderweb. Burn it with a Deku Stick (light it from a nearby torch).
- Drop down to the floor below. Defeat the three Deku Scrubs in order (2, 3, 1) to open the boss door.
- Enter the boss chamber to face Queen Gohma.
- Boss Strategy: Queen Gohma
- Phase 1: Wait for Gohma to climb onto the ceiling. When her eye turns red, quickly use your Slingshot to shoot her eye. She will fall to the ground, stunned.
- Phase 2: While she's stunned, unleash a flurry of sword attacks. Repeat this process.
- Phase 3: After taking significant damage, Gohma will start laying Gohma Larva. Defeat these quickly with your sword or Slingshot, then continue the eye-shooting strategy.
Dodongo's Cavern
The second dungeon introduces more complex environmental puzzles involving bombs and switches. Master the art of detonation to clear your path and claim the Goron's Ruby.
- Objective: Obtain the Goron's Ruby.
- Key Items: Bomb Bag, Bombs.
- Walkthrough:
- From the entrance, head straight and push the block into the gap to create a bridge.
- In the central chamber, you'll see a large Dodongo skull. Place a bomb in each of its eye sockets to open its mouth.
- Enter the Dodongo's mouth.
- Inside, defeat the Lizalfos on the bridge.
- Continue through the cavern, using bombs to clear cracked walls and activate switches.
- In the room with the moving platforms, time your jumps carefully.
- Locate the room with the three unlit torches. Light them with a Deku Stick (lit from a nearby torch or a bomb explosion) to open a door.
- You'll find the Bomb Bag in a chest after defeating a series of Keese.
- Use your new bombs to blow up the cracked wall in the central chamber, revealing a new path.
- Navigate the lower levels, using bombs to trigger floor switches and open doors.
- Eventually, you'll reach the boss chamber.
- Boss Strategy: King Dodongo
- Phase 1: King Dodongo will open his mouth to inhale. While he's doing this, toss a bomb into his mouth. This will stun him.
- Phase 2: When he's stunned, attack his head with your sword.
- Phase 3: After recovering, he'll roll around the arena. Stand in the alcoves to avoid being hit. Repeat the bomb-tossing strategy.
Jabu-Jabu's Belly
This organic dungeon presents unique challenges, including escort missions and enemies that require specific tactics. Prepare for a slippery adventure inside the Zora's patron deity.
- Objective: Obtain Zora's Sapphire.
- Key Items: Boomerang.
- Walkthrough:
- Upon entering, you'll need to find Princess Ruto. She's in the first large chamber, on a raised platform.
- Speak to her, and she'll fall into a hole. Jump in after her.
- From now on, you'll be carrying Ruto. You can drop her to solve puzzles or fight, but you'll need to pick her up again.
- Navigate through the various rooms, often needing to drop Ruto on switches to open doors.
- Be wary of the Biri and Bari enemies; use your Deku Shield to block their electrical attacks, or use your Boomerang if you have it.
- In a room with several stingers, use your Boomerang to hit the switch on the ceiling, lowering the platform.
- You'll eventually reach a room with a large tentacle. Defeat it by hitting its weak point (the bulbous tip) with your Boomerang.
- After defeating several tentacles, you'll find the Boomerang in a chest. This is crucial for the rest of the dungeon.
- Use the Boomerang to hit distant switches and retrieve items.
- Locate the room with the three main tentacles. Defeat them all using the Boomerang. This will open the path to the boss.
- Proceed to the boss chamber.
- Boss Strategy: Barinade
- Phase 1: Barinade is protected by electrical tentacles. Use your Boomerang to stun these tentacles, then attack the central body with your sword.
- Phase 2: After taking damage, Barinade will detach from the ceiling and spin around. Use your Boomerang to hit its central body when it's vulnerable.
- Phase 3: Continue hitting Barinade with the Boomerang and then attacking with your sword until it is defeated.
