Boss: Shadow Link
Encountering Shadow Link is a unique challenge that tests your mastery of Link's basic abilities. This fight is less about brute force and more about timing and strategy. Prepare for a battle of reflexes!
Preparation
- Sword Upgrade: Ensure you have at least the Noble Sword (obtained from the Goron Dance mini-game in the past) or, ideally, the Master Sword (found in the Hero's Cave in a Linked Game). A stronger sword will shorten the fight considerably.
- Shield: The Mirror Shield (from the Ancient Tomb) is highly recommended, as it can reflect some of Shadow Link's projectiles.
- Potions: Stock up on Potions from Syrup's Potion Shop in the Yoll Graveyard (present) or Lynna City (present) to recover health quickly.
- Rings: Equip defensive rings like the Red Ring (increases sword damage) or the Blue Ring (reduces damage taken) if you have them.
Battle Strategy
Shadow Link mirrors your movements and attacks, making him a tricky opponent. The key is to exploit his mirroring behavior.
- Initial Engagement: Shadow Link will appear and immediately begin to mimic your actions. He will draw his sword when you do and move in the same direction.
- The Corner Trap: The most effective strategy involves cornering Shadow Link.
- Move towards one of the corners of the room. Shadow Link will follow.
- Once you are in a corner, turn to face the wall. Shadow Link will also turn to face the wall, effectively trapping himself in the corner with you.
- Now, quickly turn away from the wall and unleash a flurry of sword slashes. Shadow Link will be unable to react quickly enough to block or move away, allowing you to land multiple hits.
- Dodge and Counter: If you can't corner him, you'll need to be more reactive.
- Shadow Link will occasionally charge at you or perform a spin attack. Dodge these by moving out of the way.
- After he completes an attack, there's a brief window where he's vulnerable. Use this opportunity to get a few hits in.
- He may also fire sword beams if your health is full. The Mirror Shield can reflect these back at him, dealing damage.
- Spin Attack Exploitation: Your own Spin Attack can be useful. Charge up your sword and release a Spin Attack when Shadow Link is close. Since he mirrors you, he'll often be caught in the attack.
- Patience is Key: Don't get greedy. Land a few hits and then reposition yourself. Rushing in will often lead to taking unnecessary damage.
Post-Battle
Once Shadow Link is defeated, he will dissipate, leaving behind a Heart Container to replenish your health and increase your maximum HP. Collect it and proceed to the next challenge!
