Mini-Boss Strategies
Throughout your journey in Holodrum, you'll encounter various mini-bosses within the dungeons. These foes often require specific strategies and item usage to overcome. Mastering these encounters is crucial for progressing and acquiring new dungeon items.
Blaino (Gnarled Root Dungeon)
- Location: Gnarled Root Dungeon, 1F, after navigating the central room with the moving blocks.
- Strategy:
Blaino is a straightforward, boxing-gloved foe. His primary attack is a powerful punch. The key to defeating him is to anticipate his movements and counter-attack.
- Dodge his punches: Blaino will wind up for a punch. When he does, quickly move out of the way. He usually takes a step or two before unleashing his attack.
- Counter-attack: Immediately after he misses a punch, Blaino will be momentarily stunned and vulnerable. This is your window to strike with your Wooden Sword or Noble Sword. Get in 2-3 hits before he recovers.
- Repeat: Continue this pattern of dodging and counter-attacking. Blaino has a decent amount of health for an early mini-boss, so patience is key.
- Reward: Upon defeat, Blaino will drop a Fairy and a portal will appear, allowing you to return to the dungeon entrance.
Syger (Snake's Remains)
- Location: Snake's Remains, 1F, in the large room with the moving floor tiles.
- Strategy:
Syger is a large, armored tiger-like enemy that charges around the room. His armor makes him impervious to direct sword attacks from the front or sides. You'll need to exploit his weakness.
- Observe his pattern: Syger will charge horizontally or vertically across the room. The floor tiles will also shift, making movement tricky.
- Use the Power Bracelet: The trick to Syger is to get behind him. When he charges past you, quickly equip your Power Bracelet.
- Lift and Throw: As soon as you are behind him, lift one of the nearby stones (or any other movable block if available) with the Power Bracelet.
- Hit his tail: Throw the stone at Syger's tail. This is his only vulnerable spot. He will briefly recoil, allowing you to get in a few sword slashes with your Wooden Sword or Noble Sword.
- Repeat: Syger will resume charging after a few moments. Continue to dodge his charges, get behind him, and throw objects at his tail until he is defeated.
- Reward: Defeating Syger grants you a Fairy and opens a portal back to the dungeon entrance.
Facet (Poison Moth's Lair)
- Location: Poison Moth's Lair, 1F, in the room accessible after using the Roc's Feather to cross pits.
- Strategy:
Facet is a large, stationary eye monster that shoots projectiles. It's surrounded by four smaller, moving eyes. Your primary goal is to destroy the main eye, but the smaller eyes pose a threat.
- Clear the small eyes first: The four smaller eyes will constantly move around the room, making it difficult to focus on Facet. Use your Wooden Sword or Noble Sword to quickly dispatch these. They only take one hit each.
- Dodge Facet's projectiles: Facet will periodically shoot a spread of three projectiles. Use your Roc's Feather to jump over these or simply move out of their path.
- Attack the main eye: Once the smaller eyes are gone, Facet is vulnerable. Approach the main eye and repeatedly slash it with your sword.
- Re-clear small eyes: After taking some damage, Facet will usually summon the four smaller eyes again. Repeat the process: clear the small eyes, then attack Facet.
- Reward: Defeating Facet will cause a Fairy to appear, along with a portal to the dungeon entrance.
Manhandla (Dancing Dragon Dungeon)
- Location: Dancing Dragon Dungeon, 2F, in a large room with a central platform.
- Strategy:
Manhandla is a classic Zelda mini-boss, a large plant-like creature with four mouths that open and close. It moves quickly and erratically around the room.
- Equip the Slingshot: Manhandla's weakness lies in its mouths. You'll need to hit each open mouth with a projectile. The Slingshot is your best friend here.
- Target open mouths: Manhandla will constantly move, and its four mouths will open and close in a rotating pattern. Wait for a mouth to open, then quickly fire a Gale Seed from your Slingshot at it.
- Prioritize: You need to hit all four mouths. After hitting one, it will close and stay closed for a while. Focus on hitting the remaining open mouths.
- Dodge its charges: Manhandla will occasionally charge directly at Link. Use the Roc's Feather to jump out of the way or simply run to avoid its path.
- Final Blow: Once all four mouths have been hit and are closed, Manhandla will become vulnerable in its center. Rush in and slash it repeatedly with your Wooden Sword or Noble Sword until it's defeated.
- Reward: A Fairy and a warp portal will appear after Manhandla's defeat.
Gohma (Unicorn's Cave)
- Location: Unicorn's Cave, B1, in a large, dark room.
- Strategy:
Gohma is a giant one-eyed crab-like creature. Its tough shell makes it immune to direct sword attacks. Its weakness is its large eye, but it only opens it periodically.
- Observe its pattern: Gohma will move around the room, occasionally stopping to open its large eye. When its eye is closed, it's invulnerable.
- Use the Magnetic Gloves: The key to Gohma is the Magnetic Gloves. Equip them and switch to their "Pull" (blue) setting.
- Open its eye: When Gohma's eye is closed, stand a short distance away and use the Magnetic Gloves to "pull" yourself towards it. This will often cause Gohma to open its eye in surprise.
- Attack the eye: As soon as the eye opens, quickly switch the Magnetic Gloves to "Push" (red) and push yourself away, then immediately equip your Wooden Sword or Noble Sword and slash the open eye. Alternatively, you can use a Bomb if you have one, but sword slashes are more reliable.
- Dodge its attacks: Gohma will occasionally shoot a small projectile from its eye when it's open. It also moves around, so be mindful of its body.
- Repeat: Continue to use the Magnetic Gloves to force its eye open and then attack it.
- Reward: Gohma will drop a Fairy and a warp portal upon defeat.
Fryeyes (Ancient Ruins)
- Location: Ancient Ruins, 1F, in a room with a central pit.
- Strategy:
Fryeyes is a floating, fiery eye mini-boss. It's initially invulnerable due to its flame shield. You'll need to extinguish its flames before you can damage it.
- Use the Power Bracelet: Fryeyes floats around the room. There are several pots scattered around the arena.
- Throw a pot: Pick up a pot using the Power Bracelet.
- Extinguish its flame: Throw the pot at Fryeyes. This will temporarily douse its flames, making it vulnerable.
- Attack with sword: While its flames are out, quickly attack Fryeyes with your Wooden Sword or Noble Sword. It will only be vulnerable for a short period before its flames reignite.
- Dodge its attacks: Fryeyes will shoot fireballs at Link. Use the Roc's Feather to jump over them or simply move out of the way.
- Repeat: Continue the cycle of throwing a pot to douse its flames and then attacking with your sword until it's defeated.
- Reward: Defeating Fryeyes yields a Fairy and a warp portal.
Pols Voice (Explorer's Crypt)
- Location: Explorer's Crypt, B1, in a room with several blocks.
- Strategy:
Pols Voice is a large, hopping ghost-like creature. It's immune to your sword and most other items. Its weakness is sound.
- Equip the Harp of Ages: The key to defeating Pols Voice is its aversion to loud noises. Equip the Harp of Ages.
- Play a Tune: Stand near Pols Voice and play any tune on the Harp of Ages. The sound waves will stun it.
- Attack with sword: While Pols Voice is stunned, quickly switch to your Wooden Sword or Noble Sword and slash it.
- Alternative: Bombs: If you don't want to constantly switch items, Bombs are also effective. Place a bomb near Pols Voice, and the explosion will damage it. This is often faster if you have a good supply of bombs.
- Dodge its hops: Pols Voice will hop around the room. Avoid contact, as it deals damage.
- Repeat: Continue to stun it with the Harp of Ages (or damage it with Bombs) and then attack with your sword until it's defeated.
- Reward: A Fairy and a warp portal will appear upon its defeat.
Darknut (Sword & Shield Maze)
- Location: Sword & Shield Maze, 1F, in a room with a narrow pathway.
- Strategy:
Darknut is a heavily armored knight. Its front and sides are completely impervious to your sword. Its only weakness is its back.
- Observe its movement: Darknut will slowly patrol the room. It will turn to face Link if you get in front of it.
- Use the Switch Hook: The Switch Hook is essential for this fight. Equip it.
- Get behind it: Wait for Darknut to turn its back to you, or strategically position yourself to get behind it.
- Switch places: Use the Switch Hook to swap positions with Darknut. This will place you directly behind it.
- Attack its back: Immediately after switching, slash Darknut's back with your Wooden Sword or Noble Sword. You can usually get in 2-3 hits before it turns around.
- Dodge its attacks: Darknut will swing its sword if you are in front of it. Avoid these attacks.
- Repeat: Continue to use the Switch Hook to get behind Darknut and attack its vulnerable back until it's defeated.
- Reward: Darknut drops a Fairy and opens a warp portal.
