Accessing the Dungeon
The Mermaid's Cave boasts a unique design with two distinct entrances, requiring you to use the Rod of Seasons to switch between them. You will primarily use the underwater entrance, but the land-based entrance is vital for certain puzzles and progression.
- Underwater Entrance: Located off the Western Coast, accessible once you possess the Zora's Flippers (obtained after the third dungeon, Poison Moth's Lair). Dive into the deep water in the Western Coast area to find the entrance.
- Land Entrance: Situated in the Samasa Desert. To reach it, you must first change the season to Autumn using the Rod of Seasons at a nearby Season Tree. This will cause leaves to pile up, allowing you to cross quicksand pits that were previously impassable. Navigate through the desert to find the cave entrance. Alternatively, changing the season to Winter will freeze the water, allowing you to walk across it to reach the entrance if you approach from the north.
Mermaid's Cave Walkthrough
Floor 1 (Underwater Entrance Start)
- From the underwater entrance, swim north into the next room.
- In this room, you’ll find a block puzzle. Push the blocks to clear a path to the north. Specifically, push the central block up or down, then the side blocks left or right to create a path.
- Continue north to a room with several enemies (Water Tektites). Defeat them to open the doors.
- Head east. You'll find a chest containing the Dungeon Map.
- Return west and then proceed north. You'll enter a large room with a central platform and deeper water.
- Swim to the west side of this room and exit through the western passage.
- In the next room, you'll encounter a series of strong currents. Navigate carefully, using your Zora's Flippers to swim against them when necessary. Your goal is to reach the northwest corner of this room. It's a bit tricky; try to stay close to the walls.
- Exit north into a room with a single block. Push it in any direction to open the door and proceed north.
- You'll now be in a room with a large pool of water and a few enemies (Cheep-Cheeps). Defeat them and then head east.
- This eastern room contains a switch. Hit it with your sword or projectile to temporarily lower the water level in a nearby section. Quickly swim back west and then south to reach a newly accessible area on the west side of the room with the currents.
- In this area, you'll find a staircase leading up to Floor 2.
Floor 2 (Land Entrance & Roc's Cape)
- Upon reaching Floor 2, you'll find yourself in a dry section of the dungeon. Head west.
- This room has a series of moving platforms and enemies (Hardhat Beetles). Carefully navigate across them, using your Power Bracelet to push the Hardhat Beetles into pits, to reach the western exit.
- You'll now be in a room that connects to the Land Entrance of the dungeon. This is where you would enter if you came from the Samasa Desert.
- From here, head north. You'll find a room with a few enemies (Wizzrobes) and a locked door. Defeat the enemies.
- To open the locked door, you'll need a Small Key. Head east from this room.
- In the eastern room, you'll find a block puzzle. Push the blocks to reveal a chest containing a Small Key. A common solution is to push the top-right block left, then the bottom-right block up, then the bottom-left block right.
- Return west and use the Small Key to open the northern door.
- In the next room, you'll face a series of Wizzrobes. Defeat them all. Once they are vanquished, a chest will appear. Open it to receive the invaluable Roc's Cape! This item allows Link to jump over gaps and enemies, and to float briefly.
- With the Roc's Cape equipped, you can now explore the dungeon much more freely. Head back south, then west, and take the staircase back down to Floor 1.
Floor 1 (Continued - Mini-Boss)
- Back on Floor 1, now with the Roc's Cape, head east from the staircase.
- You'll find a large underwater area. Swim to the eastern side and locate a passage leading north.
- This passage leads to the mini-boss chamber. Prepare for battle!
Mini-Boss: Manhandla
Manhandla is a large, four-mouthed plant creature that moves rapidly around the room. Each mouth is a vulnerable point, but your sword won't cut it!
- Strategy: Equip your Bombs. Wait for Manhandla to open one of its mouths, then quickly toss a bomb into it. Each successful hit will destroy one mouth.
- Recommended Loadout: Bombs on A or B, Roc's Cape on the other button for evasion.
- Tips: Manhandla moves quickly, so anticipate its movements. Use the Roc's Cape to jump over its body or dodge its charges. Try to corner it or wait for it to pause before throwing a bomb. Once all four mouths are destroyed, Manhandla will be defeated.
After defeating Manhandla, a warp portal will appear, and the door to the east will open. Proceed through it.
Floor 1 (Continued - Compass & Boss Key)
- In the next room, you'll find a chest containing the Compass. This will show you the location of the Boss Key and the boss chamber on your map.
- Continue east into a room with a large body of water. Dive down and swim to the far eastern side.
- You'll find a switch underwater. Hit it to open a gate.
- Swim through the newly opened gate to the north.
- In this northern room, you'll find a series of blocks and a switch. Push the blocks to clear a path to the switch, then hit it. This will reveal a chest containing the Boss Key!
- With the Boss Key in hand, retrace your steps back to the room where you fought Manhandla.
- From the Manhandla room, head north through the newly opened door (after defeating Manhandla).
- You'll find yourself in a room with a large staircase leading down to Floor B1.
Floor B1 (Boss Chamber)
- Descend the staircase to Floor B1.
- You'll be in a small antechamber. Use your Boss Key on the large locked door to the north.
- Enter the final chamber and prepare to face the dungeon boss!
Boss: Octogon
Octogon is a giant octopus-like creature that resides in a large pool of water. It has two distinct phases, requiring both underwater and surface combat.
- Phase 1: Underwater Combat
- Description: Octogon will swim around the perimeter of the room, occasionally surfacing to spit rocks or ink at you. Its main weakness is its eye, which is only exposed when it's underwater.
- Strategy: Dive underwater and swim towards Octogon. When its eye opens, strike it with your Sword. Be careful to avoid its charges and the rocks it spits. After several hits, it will retreat to the surface.
- Recommended Loadout: Sword on A, Roc's Cape on B for quick surfacing/diving or dodging.
- Phase 2: Surface Combat
- Description: Octogon will surface and move around the central platform, attempting to ram you. It will also continue to spit rocks.
- Strategy: When Octogon is on the surface, it will try to charge at you. Use your Roc's Cape to jump over it as it charges. After it passes under you, quickly turn and strike its eye with your Sword. Repeat this process until it is defeated.
- Recommended Loadout: Sword on A, Roc's Cape on B.
- Tips for Both Phases:
- Stay mobile. Octogon is fast and its attacks can be hard to avoid if you stand still.
- The Roc's Cape is crucial for dodging in both phases. Use it to jump over Octogon's charges on the surface and to quickly change depth underwater.
- Conserve your health. This is a multi-stage fight, so avoid unnecessary damage.
Rewards
Once Octogon is defeated, a Heart Container will appear, increasing your maximum health. Collect it, then proceed to the north to claim the Blowing Wind, the sixth Essence of Nature!
