Mini-Games & Challenges

Beyond the main quest, Holodrum offers several engaging mini-games and challenges that can reward Link with Rupees, Gasha Seeds, and even crucial upgrades. Mastering these diversions is key to fully equipping yourself for the trials ahead.

Subrosian Dance Hall

Location: Subrosia Village (South-East)

The Subrosian Dance Hall is a rhythmic challenge where Link must mimic the dance moves of the Subrosians. Success here can lead to valuable items.

  • How to Play: Speak to the Subrosian in charge to initiate the dance. A sequence of directional inputs (Up, Down, Left, Right) will appear above the dancers. You must press the corresponding direction on your D-Pad in time with the music and the dancers' movements.
  • Rewards:
    • First Win: Boomerang (a powerful projectile weapon).
    • Subsequent Wins: Rupees (varying amounts), Gasha Seeds.
  • Strategy: Pay close attention to the lead dancer's movements. The patterns often repeat or build upon previous sequences. Don't rush; focus on timing. The music provides a good rhythm cue.

Goron Dance

Location: Goron Mountain (North-East of Goron Mountain, in a cave accessible after clearing the Poison Moth's Lair)

Similar to the Subrosian Dance, the Goron Dance challenges Link's rhythm and memory. Mastering this fiery jig is essential for progression and rewards.

  • How to Play: Enter the Goron Dance Hall and speak to the Goron in charge. You'll need to pay a small Rupee fee to participate. A sequence of directional inputs (Up, Down, Left, Right) will be shown by the lead Goron. You must accurately replicate the sequence. The sequences become longer and faster with each successful round.
  • Rewards:
    • First Win (after a certain number of successful rounds): Brother Emblem (a key item required to progress through Goron Mountain and gain access to the Dancing Dragon Dungeon).
    • Subsequent Wins: Rupees (varying amounts), Gasha Seeds.
  • Strategy: The Goron Dance can be trickier than the Subrosian version due to the faster pace. Focus on memorizing the patterns rather than just reacting. If you have trouble, try writing down the sequence or saying it aloud. The music is a good guide for timing your presses.

Target Practice

Location: Western Woods (North-West of Horon Village)

Test your aiming skills with the Target Practice mini-game, where precision is rewarded.

  • How to Play: Speak to the man operating the game. For a small Rupee fee, you'll be given a set number of shots with your Slingshot or Bow (once acquired) to hit moving targets. Different targets yield different point values.
  • Rewards:
    • High Score: Rupees, Gasha Seeds.
    • Perfect Score (all targets hit): Can sometimes yield a Piece of Heart or a larger Rupee reward.
  • Strategy:
    • Slingshot: Aim slightly ahead of moving targets to account for projectile travel time.
    • Bow: The Bow offers faster projectiles, making it easier to hit targets directly.
    • Prioritize higher-value targets (often smaller or faster-moving) when possible.

Target Carts

Location: Goron Mountain (Mine Cart Ride entrance, accessible after obtaining the Roc's Feather)

This unique mini-game combines the thrill of a mine cart ride with target shooting. It's a great way to earn Rupees and practice your aim.

  • How to Play: Pay the Goron at the entrance to the mine cart ride. As your cart speeds along the tracks, targets will pop up along the walls and ceiling. You must use your Slingshot or Bow to hit as many as possible before the ride ends. Different colored targets may yield different point values.
  • Rewards:
    • High Score: Rupees (the amount depends on your score).
    • Achieving a certain score threshold: Can sometimes reward a Gasha Seed or other minor items.
  • Strategy:
    • Anticipation: Learn the track layout and where targets typically appear. Many targets are static, but some move.
    • Rapid Fire: Use the fastest projectile weapon you have (Bow is ideal). Don't hesitate to fire continuously.
    • Focus: It's easy to get distracted by the scenery. Keep your eyes peeled for targets.

Fairies' Woods Mini-Game

Location: Fairies' Woods (East of Horon Village, accessible after obtaining the Power Bracelet)

This is a memory-based mini-game where you must follow a sequence of fairies as they hide in bushes. Success can lead to valuable upgrades.

  • How to Play: Enter the Fairies' Woods and find the group of fairies. One will challenge you to a game. A sequence of fairies will fly into different bushes. You must then use your Sword to strike the bushes in the exact order the fairies entered them. The sequences get longer and more complex with each successful round.
  • Rewards:
    • First Win (after a certain number of successful rounds): Boomerang Upgrade (increases the Boomerang's range and speed).
    • Subsequent Wins: Rupees, Bombs, Arrows, or other consumables.
  • Strategy:
    • Memorization: Pay close attention to the order. If you struggle, try to mentally (or physically) trace the path of each fairy.
    • Patience: Don't rush your strikes. Take a moment to recall the sequence before hitting the next bush.
    • Visual Cues: Sometimes the bushes might shake slightly or have a subtle visual cue if you're close to the correct one, but rely primarily on memory.

Holodrum Trading Sequence (Noble Sword / Master Sword)

This is not a mini-game in the traditional sense, but a lengthy and rewarding challenge involving a series of trades across Holodrum and Subrosia. Completing this sequence is crucial for obtaining the game's most powerful sword upgrade.

The final reward depends on whether you are playing a Linked Game (from Oracle of Ages) or a fresh Oracle of Seasons save.

Standard Game Reward: Noble Sword

In a standard, unlinked game of Oracle of Seasons, completing this sequence will upgrade your sword to the Noble Sword.

  • Starting Point: Begin by speaking to the Poe in the Graveyard (north of Horon Village). You will need the Shovel to dig up his grave.
  • Sequence of Trades:
    1. Poe (Graveyard) -> Poe's Soul: Dig up the Poe's grave to obtain the Poe's Soul.
    2. Deku Scrub (Western Woods) -> Poe's Soul: Find the Deku Scrub in the Western Woods (near the Target Practice area). He's hiding in a hole. Offer him the Poe's Soul for the Iron Pot.
    3. Chef (Subrosia Village) -> Iron Pot: Locate the Chef in the Subrosian kitchen (South-East Subrosia Village). Give him the Iron Pot for the Lava Soup.
    4. Biggoron (Mt. Cucco Summit) -> Lava Soup: Travel to the summit of Mt. Cucco (requires the Roc's Feather and possibly the Magnetic Gloves). Offer the Lava Soup to Biggoron for the Goron Vase.
    5. Vasu (Horon Village) -> Goron Vase: Visit Vasu's Ring Shop in Horon Village. He will trade you the Goron Vase for the Fish.
    6. Fisherman (Western Woods) -> Fish: Find the Fisherman in the Western Woods (near the entrance to the Poison Moth's Lair). Give him the Fish for the Broken Sword.
    7. Master Swordsman (Eastern Suburbs) -> Broken Sword: Head to the Master Swordsman's cave in the Eastern Suburbs (requires the Power Bracelet to move the rock). Present him with the Broken Sword for the Noble Sword.
  • Reward: The Noble Sword, a significant upgrade to your starting sword, dealing more damage to enemies.
  • Strategy: This sequence requires extensive travel across Holodrum and Subrosia. Ensure you have all necessary items like the Shovel, Roc's Feather, Power Bracelet, and potentially the Magnetic Gloves to reach all NPCs. Keep this guide handy to avoid getting lost or forgetting who needs what.

Linked Game Reward: Master Sword

If you are playing a Linked Game (starting Oracle of Seasons with a "Secret of Labrynna" from Oracle of Ages), completing this trading sequence will instead reward you with the legendary Master Sword.

  • Starting Point: The sequence begins identically to the standard game, starting with the Poe's Soul from the Poe in the Graveyard.
  • Sequence of Trades: The trade sequence is exactly the same as above, leading through the Iron Pot, Lava Soup, Goron Vase, Fish, and Broken Sword.
  • Final Trade:
    1. Master Swordsman (Eastern Suburbs) -> Broken Sword: Present him with the Broken Sword for the Master Sword.
  • Reward: The Master Sword, the most powerful sword in the game, dealing even more damage than the Noble Sword. This is the ultimate weapon upgrade.
  • Strategy: The same travel and item requirements apply. The only difference is the final sword received, making a Linked Game playthrough even more rewarding.

Gasha Seed Planting

While not a mini-game, planting Gasha Seeds is a crucial challenge for item collection and can yield powerful upgrades and rare rings.

  • How it Works: Throughout Holodrum, you'll find soft soil patches (indicated by a small mound of dirt). Plant a Gasha Seed in one of these spots. Over time, a Gasha Tree will grow, eventually bearing a Gasha Nut. The tree's growth is often tied to the number of enemies defeated or screens transitioned.
  • Gasha Nut Contents: Gasha Nuts can contain a wide variety of items, including:
    • Rupees (various denominations, up to 200 Rupees)
    • Magic Rings (some of which are unique to Gasha Nuts, including powerful stat-boosting rings)
    • Potions (e.g., Potion, Fairy Powder)
    • Bombs, Arrows
    • Pieces of Heart (a vital way to increase your maximum health)
    • Gasha Seeds (sometimes you get another seed back!)
  • Strategy:
    • Location Matters: The quality and rarity of items from a Gasha Nut can be influenced by where you plant the seed. Some spots are known to yield better rings or more valuable items. Experiment with different locations, especially those in more remote or dangerous areas. For example, planting in Subrosia or on Mt. Cucco might yield better results than near Horon Village.
    • Check Frequently: Gasha Trees grow over time. Make it a habit to check your planted seeds periodically, especially after completing dungeons or major story segments.
    • Collect All Seeds: Always pick up Gasha Seeds dropped by enemies (especially bosses) or found in chests. The more you plant, the higher your chances of getting rare items and completing your Ring Collection.
    • Ring Management: If you get a duplicate ring from a Gasha Nut, you can sell it at Vasu's Ring Shop for Rupees.
