Essence Locations
The eight Essences of Nature are crucial to restoring the seasons to Holodrum and ultimately defeating Onox. Each Essence is found at the end of a dungeon, typically after defeating the dungeon's boss. Collecting all eight is a primary objective in your quest, as they empower the Maku Tree and grant you access to Onox's Castle.
Below is a comprehensive guide to locating each Essence, including dungeon access requirements, boss strategies, and recommended items.
1. Gnarled Root Dungeon: Fertile Soil
- Location: Southeastern Holodrum, near the starting area.
- Access: No special items required, just navigate through the initial woods.
- Key Items Found: Wooden Sword, Gnarled Key (for dungeon progression).
- Boss: Aquamentus
- Strategy: Aquamentus is a dragon-like creature that shoots fireballs in sets of three. Stay mobile to dodge its projectiles. When it lowers its head, its horn becomes vulnerable. Strike the horn with your Wooden Sword. Repeat this process until defeated.
- Reward: Fertile Soil Essence.
- Common Pitfalls: Getting cornered by fireballs. Keep moving!
2. Snake's Remains: Gift of Time
- Location: Western Woods, west of Horon Village.
- Access: You'll need the Power Bracelet, found in the Horon Village shop or as a quest reward, to move the mushroom blocking the entrance.
- Key Items Found: Roc's Feather.
- Boss: Dodongo
- Strategy: Dodongo is a large, armored dinosaur. It will charge at you and occasionally open its mouth. When its mouth is open, quickly toss a Bomb inside. The bomb will explode, stunning Dodongo. While it's stunned, run around to its tail and strike it with your Sword. Repeat this sequence 3-4 times.
- Recommended Loadout: Sword, Bombs.
- Reward: Gift of Time Essence.
- Common Pitfalls: Running out of bombs. Stock up before entering the boss room!
3. Poison Moth's Lair: Bright Sun
- Location: Northern Natzu Prairie.
- Access: Requires the Roc's Feather (from Snake's Remains) to jump over gaps and navigate the overworld. You'll also need to use the Rod of Seasons to change the season to Summer to burn down a bush blocking the path.
- Key Items Found: Slingshot.
- Boss: Mothula
- Strategy: Mothula is a giant moth that flies erratically and drops smaller moths (Mothulas) and poisonous spores. Use the Roc's Feather to jump over its charge attacks and avoid the spores. When Mothula swoops down low, strike it with your Sword. The smaller Mothulas can be defeated with a single sword slash.
- Recommended Loadout: Sword, Roc's Feather.
- Reward: Bright Sun Essence.
- Common Pitfalls: Getting overwhelmed by smaller moths or poisoned by spores. Prioritize dodging.
4. Dancing Dragon Dungeon: Burning Flame
- Location: Goron Mountain region, within the lava-filled area.
- Access: Requires the Magnetic Gloves (found in the dungeon itself) to cross chasms and solve puzzles within the dungeon. You'll also need to navigate Goron Mountain, which may involve changing seasons to clear paths.
- Key Items Found: Magnetic Gloves.
- Boss: Gleeok
- Strategy: Gleeok is a two-headed dragon. Initially, it will fly around, shooting fireballs. Use your Sword to attack its heads when they get close. After taking enough damage, its heads will detach and fly independently, continuing to shoot fire. Focus on one head at a time, striking it with your Sword until it's defeated. Then, repeat for the second head.
- Recommended Loadout: Sword, Roc's Feather (for dodging).
- Reward: Burning Flame Essence.
- Common Pitfalls: Getting hit by fireballs from both heads. Try to keep them on one side of Link.
5. Crown Dungeon: Blowing Wind
- Location: Northern Holodrum Plain, specifically the northern section of Sunken City.
- Access: You'll need the Rod of Seasons to change the season to Winter, freezing the water in Sunken City to access the dungeon entrance.
- Key Items Found: Power Ring L-1 (optional, found in dungeon).
- Boss: Gohma
- Strategy: Gohma is a giant one-eyed crab. It will scuttle around and occasionally open its large eye. When its eye is open, quickly fire a Mystery Seed or Ember Seed from your Slingshot into its eye. This will stun it. While stunned, attack its eye with your Sword. Gohma will also drop smaller Gohma larvae; defeat them with your sword to clear the arena.
- Recommended Loadout: Sword, Slingshot (with Mystery or Ember Seeds).
- Reward: Blowing Wind Essence.
- Common Pitfalls: Running out of seeds. Ensure you have a good supply before the fight.
6. Explorer's Crypt: Ancient Wood
- Location: Spool Swamp.
- Access: Requires the Roc's Feather and Power Bracelet to navigate the swamp and clear obstacles. You may also need to change seasons to manipulate water levels or clear paths.
- Key Items Found: Magical Boomerang.
- Boss: Smog
- Strategy: Smog is a gaseous entity that splits into smaller, separate clouds. Use the Magical Boomerang to hit the smaller clouds, which will cause them to merge back into the main Smog. Once Smog is whole, it will reveal a core. Hit this core with your Sword. Repeat this process, avoiding its electrical attacks and the smaller clouds, until it's defeated.
- Recommended Loadout: Sword, Magical Boomerang.
- Reward: Ancient Wood Essence.
- Common Pitfalls: Getting hit by Smog's lightning attacks. Keep moving and anticipate its movements.
7. Sword & Shield Maze: Rolling Stone
- Location: Talus Peaks, a mountainous region in the northwest.
- Access: Requires extensive use of the Magnetic Gloves to traverse the peaks and enter the dungeon. You'll also need to use the Rod of Seasons to change seasons to clear paths (e.g., Winter to create snowdrifts, Spring to make flowers bloom for jumping).
- Key Items Found: Hyper Slingshot.
- Boss: Manhandla
- Strategy: Manhandla is a multi-mouthed plant. It moves quickly around the arena, and each mouth shoots projectiles. Your goal is to destroy all four mouths. Equip your Bombs and strategically place them in Manhandla's path so that they explode near its mouths. Once a mouth is destroyed, it will not regenerate. After all four mouths are gone, Manhandla's core will be exposed. Attack the core with your Sword until it is defeated.
- Recommended Loadout: Sword, Bombs.
- Reward: Rolling Stone Essence.
- Common Pitfalls: Running out of bombs or getting cornered by Manhandla's rapid movements.
8. Old Zora's Domain: Noble Sacredwood
- Location: Eastern Coast, accessible through the Sunken City or by navigating the coastal areas.
- Access: Requires the Mermaid Suit (found in the dungeon itself) to explore its submerged areas. You'll need to manipulate seasons to access the initial entrance, possibly using the Rod of Seasons to create a path through water or ice.
- Key Items Found: Mermaid Suit.
- Boss: Medusa Head
- Strategy: Medusa Head is a multi-headed monster that floats in the water. Each head shoots projectiles. You must destroy all of its smaller heads first. Use your Sword to strike the heads when they are within reach. After all the smaller heads are defeated, the main head will be exposed and vulnerable. Continue to attack the main head with your Sword until it is destroyed. The Mermaid Suit will be essential for maneuvering underwater during this fight.
- Recommended Loadout: Sword, Mermaid Suit (equipped).
- Reward: Noble Sacredwood Essence.
- Common Pitfalls: Getting hit by multiple projectiles simultaneously. Focus on one head at a time and keep moving.
