Heart Containers & Pieces of Heart

In The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, increasing Link's maximum health is paramount for overcoming the Great Sea's perilous dungeons and formidable boss encounters. Your health bar can be extended by collecting either a full Heart Container or four Pieces of Heart. Each full Heart Container or set of four Pieces of Heart will permanently add one heart to your health meter, providing a crucial advantage in your quest to rescue Tetra and defeat Bellum.

There are a total of 8 Heart Containers obtained directly from dungeon bosses and 16 Pieces of Heart scattered across the world. Since four Pieces of Heart combine to form one full Heart Container, this means there are an additional 4 Heart Containers available from Pieces of Heart. In total, Link begins with 3 hearts and can achieve a maximum of 15 hearts (3 starting hearts + 8 boss Heart Containers + 4 Heart Containers from Pieces of Heart).

Heart Containers (Boss Rewards)

These 8 Heart Containers are awarded automatically after defeating each of the main dungeon bosses. They are unmissable and represent key milestones in your progression through the game's story. Defeating these formidable foes not only advances the narrative but also significantly boosts Link's survivability against future challenges.

Heart Container # Boss Name Location / Temple Strategy Overview
1 Blaaz, Master of Fire Temple of Fire Use the Boomerang to hit Blaaz's true form (the blue flame) after he splits into three. Once stunned, slash him with your sword. Repeat this process, avoiding his fire attacks and the rolling boulders.
2 Cyclok Temple of Wind Cyclok is a giant eye that creates whirlwinds. Use the Boomerang to hit the small eyes that orbit Cyclok, stunning him. Once stunned, strike his main eye with your sword. Be mindful of the strong winds and falling debris.
3 Crayk Temple of Courage Crayk is a giant crab-like creature. Use the Bow to shoot the eyes on its back when it's facing away. When it charges, use bombs to flip it over, then attack its underside with your sword. The map on the top screen is crucial for tracking its movements.
4 Diabolical Cubus Sisters Ghost Ship This boss consists of four ghostly sisters who play a game of "follow the leader." Pay close attention to their movements on the top screen. Shoot the sister who is not mimicking the others with your Bow. As the game progresses, they move faster and create illusions.
5 Gongoron Temple of Ice Gongoron is a large Goron-like creature. Use the Grappling Hook to pull the ice blocks towards him, trapping him against the wall. Once he's pinned, attack his exposed back with your sword. Watch out for his ground pound attacks that create shockwaves.
6 Eox Mutoh's Temple Eox is a colossal Golem. Use the Bow to shoot the red targets on his body, causing parts of him to fall off. Once he's reduced in size, climb onto his head and use the Hammer to strike the red spike on his head. Repeat this process until he is defeated.
7 Bellum (First Form) Temple of the Ocean King Bellum's first form is a giant eye. Use the Grappling Hook to pull away its tentacles, exposing its eye. Strike the eye with your sword. When it retreats, use the Bow to shoot the eyes on its tentacles. Be careful of its ink attacks.
8 Bellumbeck (Final Form) Temple of the Ocean King This is the final battle against Bellum, possessing Linebeck. You'll need to use the Phantom Sword to damage Bellum. First, use the Boomerang to stun the eyes on Bellum's tentacles, then slash them. Once Bellum is exposed, strike the eye on his body. During the second phase, you'll be on the Ghost Ship, using its cannon to shoot Bellum's eyes. Finally, use the Phantom Sword to deliver the finishing blows.

Pieces of Heart (Collectibles)

Pieces of Heart are hidden throughout the Great Sea and its various islands. Collecting four of these will automatically combine to form one full Heart Container, adding to your maximum health. Many require specific items, puzzle-solving, minigame mastery, or keen observation to acquire. There are 16 Pieces of Heart in total, forming 4 additional Heart Containers.

Below is a comprehensive guide to finding all 16 Pieces of Heart, organized by their general location within the Great Sea quadrants.

Northern Sea Quadrant (Mercay Island, Cannon Island, Dee Ess Island)

This quadrant is where your adventure begins, and it holds several early opportunities to boost your health.

  • Piece of Heart 1: Mercay Island (Tavern's Secret)
    • Location: Inside the Mercay Tavern, on Mercay Island.
    • Requirements: Bomb Bag.
    • Strategy: Once you have the Bomb Bag (obtained from the Temple of Fire), return to the tavern in Mercay Town. On the right side of the main room, there's a cracked section of the wall. Place a Bomb next to it to destroy the wall, revealing a hidden room. Inside this room, you'll find a treasure chest containing your first Piece of Heart.
  • Piece of Heart 2: Mercay Island (Temple of Ocean King Entrance)
    • Location: On a high ledge near the entrance to the Temple of the Ocean King on Mercay Island.
    • Requirements: Boomerang.
    • Strategy: After acquiring the Boomerang (from the Temple of Wind), head to the area just outside the Temple of the Ocean King. Look for a switch on a high, inaccessible ledge to the left of the temple entrance. Use the Boomerang to hit this switch. Hitting the switch will lower a nearby platform. Climb onto this platform to reach the chest containing the Piece of Heart.
  • Piece of Heart 3: Cannon Island (Cave Puzzle)
    • Location: Within the cave system on Cannon Island.
    • Requirements: Bombs (optional, for clearing some paths).
    • Strategy: Navigate through the Cannon Island cave. You'll eventually reach a room with several movable blocks and a floor switch. The goal is to push the blocks strategically to clear a path to the switch. One block needs to be pushed onto the switch to open a gate. Be careful not to trap yourself with the blocks. Once the gate is open, proceed to the chest containing the Piece of Heart.
  • Piece of Heart 4: Cannon Island (Cannon Game)
    • Location: Reward from the Cannon Game on Cannon Island.
    • Requirements: 20 Rupees per attempt.
    • Strategy: Speak to the man who runs the cannon game on Cannon Island. Your objective is to achieve a score of 2,500 points or more. This requires precision and quick reflexes with the stylus. Practice makes perfect, so keep trying until you master the trajectory and timing.
  • Piece of Heart 5: Dee Ess Island (Island Puzzle)
    • Location: Dee Ess Island, accessible by ship in the Northern Sea.
    • Requirements: Grappling Hook.
    • Strategy: Dee Ess Island is a giant, letter-shaped island that acts as a puzzle. You'll need the Grappling Hook to cross gaps and activate distant levers. Follow the path, using your items to activate switches and open gates. The Piece of Heart is in a chest at the end of the puzzle sequence, often requiring you to grapple across the "S" shape.

South-East Sea Quadrant (Molida Island, Isle of Gust, Isle of Ember, Bannan Island)

This vibrant quadrant offers a mix of minigames and hidden secrets for the intrepid explorer.

  • Piece of Heart 6: Molida Island (Ship-Sinking Game)
    • Location: Reward from Romanos' Ship-Sinking game on Molida Island.
    • Requirements: Completion of the Temple of Wind.
    • Strategy: After completing the Temple of Wind and returning to Molida Island, speak to Romanos in his house (the one with the large telescope). He will challenge you to a game of "Ship-Sinking" (similar to Battleship). Successfully sink all his ships within the time limit to win this Piece of Heart. It costs 50 Rupees per attempt.
  • Piece of Heart 7: Molida Island (Hidden Beach Cave)
    • Location: A hidden cave on the eastern side of Molida Island.
    • Requirements: Bomb Bag.
    • Strategy: On the eastern side of Molida Island, near the beach where you first land, there's a suspicious-looking rock formation against the cliff face. Use a Bomb to destroy it, revealing a small cave entrance. Inside, you'll find a chest with the Piece of Heart.
  • Piece of Heart 8: Isle of Gust (Bombchu Path)
    • Location: Northern section of the Isle of Gust.
    • Requirements: Bombchus.
    • Strategy: In the northern part of the Isle of Gust, you'll find a path blocked by several rock formations that are too far away for regular bombs. Use Bombchus (obtained from the Temple of Wind) to clear a path through them. Draw a path with your stylus for the Bombchu to follow, navigating around obstacles to reach the breakable rocks. This will lead you to a chest containing the Piece of Heart.
  • Piece of Heart 9: Isle of Ember (Volcano Summit Target)
    • Location: Near the volcano summit on the Isle of Ember.
    • Requirements: Bow.
    • Strategy: After acquiring the Bow (from the Ghost Ship), head towards the volcano's peak on the Isle of Ember. Look for a target on a high pillar that is out of reach for your sword. Shoot the target with an Arrow to make a chest appear containing the Piece of Heart.
  • Piece of Heart 10: Bannan Island (Banana Challenge)
    • Location: Reward for completing the "Banana Challenge" on Bannan Island.
    • Requirements: Patience and good timing.
    • Strategy: Sail to Bannan Island. Speak to the man who offers the "Banana Challenge." This involves a series of quick-time events or a specific item usage (often related to the Boomerang or Bombs) to collect bananas within a time limit. Successfully complete his challenge to earn this Piece of Heart. It costs 100 Rupees per attempt.

  • Piece of Heart 12: Maze Island (Maze Completion)
    • Location: Reward for completing the maze on Maze Island.
    • Requirements: None, but a keen sense of direction.
    • Strategy: Sail to Maze Island. The goal is to successfully navigate the challenging maze. The reward for reaching the end of the maze is a chest containing a Piece of Heart. Pay close attention to the map on the top screen and use your stylus to draw a path if needed to avoid getting lost. There are also enemies within the maze to contend with.
  • Piece of Heart 13: Uncharted Island (Salvage Arm Treasure)
    • Location: Retrieved from the sea near an uncharted island in the Northwest Quadrant.
    • Requirements: Salvage Arm, Treasure Map.
    • Strategy: First, you need to find the treasure chart for this specific Piece of Heart. This chart is located in a chest on Dee Ess Island (in the Northern Sea Quadrant), often found after completing the main island puzzle. Once you have the chart, sail to the indicated spot on the map (a small, unnamed island in the northwest) and use the Salvage Arm to retrieve the sunken chest containing the Piece of Heart.

South-West Sea Quadrant (Spirit Island, Uncharted Island)

The final quadrant holds a couple of unique challenges, including a memory game and a fishing reward.

  • Piece of Heart 14: Spirit Island (Spirit Challenge)
    • Location: Reward for completing a challenge on Spirit Island.
    • Requirements: None.
    • Strategy: On Spirit Island, you'll encounter a spirit who challenges you to a memory game. The challenge gets progressively harder.
  • Piece of Heart 15: Uncharted Island (Fishing Reward)
    • Location: Caught while fishing near an uncharted island in the Southwest Quadrant.
    • Requirements: Fishing Rod.
    • Strategy: You'll need the Fishing Rod (obtained from the Old Wayfarer on Mercay Island after getting the Sunken Treasure). Sail to the small uncharted island in the southwest (it's often marked with a small fishing spot icon on your chart). Fish in the waters surrounding this island. Keep fishing, and eventually, you will reel in a bottle containing this Piece of Heart. It might take several tries and different types of fish before you hook the bottle.
  • Piece of Heart 16: Linebeck's Ship (Post-Game Reward)

This is often considered the "completionist" reward.
