Walkthrough: Isle of Ember
Welcome, intrepid adventurer, to the Isle of Ember! This fiery island, located in the Southeastern Sea, is your very first major destination in The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. It’s here you’ll begin your quest to rescue the mysterious fairy Ciela and, ultimately, find the Ghost Ship. Prepare for scorching temperatures, tricky puzzles, and your first dungeon challenge!
Reaching the Isle of Ember
After your initial encounter with Oshus and the discovery of the Phantom Hourglass, your next objective is to sail to the Isle of Ember. This island is crucial for progressing the main story.
- Location: The Isle of Ember is situated in the Southeastern Sea. It's the large, volcanic island prominently displayed on your Sea Chart.
- Navigation: From Mercay Island, head directly south. You'll need to sail through a narrow channel between two smaller islands before reaching Ember. Keep an eye on your Sea Chart to avoid obstacles.
- Landing: Approach the island from the west. There's a small, sandy beach marked with a dock icon on your map, perfect for mooring your ship.
First Steps on the Isle of Ember
Upon landing, you'll immediately notice the island's volcanic nature. The ground is hot, and steam vents are scattered about. Your initial goal is to find the entrance to the dungeon and meet the island's resident sage.
- Explore the Beach & Initial Path:
- As you disembark, head north along the path. You'll encounter your first enemy: a Red ChuChu. Defeat it with your sword.
- Continue north. You'll find a signpost warning of the heat.
- To the east, you'll see a small cave entrance. This leads to the first section of the dungeon.
- Meet the Old Man (Ferrus):
- Just before the cave entrance, you'll spot an old man named Ferrus. Speak with him.
- Ferrus will explain that he’s a cartographer and is looking for a map. He’ll also hint at the dangers of the island and the presence of a "sacred flame."
- He mentions that the cave ahead leads to the Temple of Fire.
- Entering the Temple of Fire (Exterior):
- Enter the cave Ferrus indicated. This isn't the main dungeon yet, but an introductory area.
- Inside, you'll find a series of platforms and a gap. Use the Boomerang (which you should have acquired from Oshus on Mercay Island) to hit the switch on the other side of the gap. This will extend a bridge.
- Cross the bridge and proceed. You'll encounter more Red ChuChus.
- You'll eventually come out onto an elevated path on the exterior of the volcano. Follow this path, defeating any enemies in your way.
- The First Puzzle: Wind & Switches
- You'll reach an area with several wind vents and two switches. One switch is on a higher ledge, and the other is on the ground.
- Strategy:
- Stand on the ground switch. This will activate a wind vent.
- Use your Boomerang to target the higher switch. The wind will carry the Boomerang to hit it.
- Hitting both switches will open the large stone door, revealing the true entrance to the Temple of Fire.
Temple of Fire: Dungeon Walkthrough
The Temple of Fire is your first proper dungeon. It introduces core mechanics like using the Boomerang for puzzles, navigating lava, and battling new enemies.
Floor 1F
- Entrance Chamber:
- Upon entering, you'll be in a large chamber. Defeat the Red ChuChus.
- Notice the unlit torch in the center and a locked door to the north.
- To the east, there's a small alcove with a switch. Hit it with your sword to open the door to the west.
- Western Room & Small Key:
- In this room, you'll find a Torch Slug. These enemies are invulnerable to your sword when their flame is active.
- Strategy: Use your Boomerang to douse their flame, then quickly attack with your sword.
- After defeating the Torch Slug, a chest will appear containing a Small Key.
- Unlocking the Northern Door:
- Return to the entrance chamber and use the Small Key on the northern locked door. Proceed through.
- Lava Room & Compass:
- This room features a large pool of lava and moving platforms.
- Carefully navigate across the platforms. You'll encounter Keese (flying bats) – defeat them with your sword or Boomerang.
- On the northern side of the room, you'll find a chest containing the Dungeon Map. This will reveal the layout of the entire dungeon on your top screen.
- Continue to the stairs leading down to B1.
Floor B1
- Central Chamber & Fire Traps:
- You'll enter a large, multi-level chamber. Watch out for the Fire Traps (flaming bars that sweep across the floor).
- To the west, there's a path blocked by a large block. You can't push it yet.
- To the east, there's a path leading to a switch.
- Eastern Path & Boomerang Puzzle:
- Follow the eastern path. You'll reach a platform with a switch on the other side of a small gap.
- Puzzle: Use your Boomerang to hit the switch. This will activate a moving platform across the lava.
- Ride the platform across. You'll find another switch and a block. Push the block into the hole to create a shortcut.
- Hit the second switch to open a door to the north.
- Northern Room & Bomb Bag:
- In this room, you'll face more Torch Slugs. Defeat them.
- A chest will appear containing the Bomb Bag! This is your new dungeon item. You'll start with 10 Bombs.
- Item Usage: Tap the Bomb icon on your bottom screen to select it, then tap where you want to place it. Bombs can destroy cracked walls and activate distant switches.
- Returning to the Central Chamber & New Paths:
- With the Bomb Bag, return to the central chamber.
- Look for a cracked wall on the western side. Place a Bomb near it to blow it open.
- This reveals a path leading to a large block. Push it into the hole to create another shortcut and access the western side of the chamber.
- You'll also find a cracked floor tile. Place a Bomb on it to create a hole, dropping you down to B2.
Floor B2
- Lower Chamber & Lava Flow:
- You'll land in a lower section of the dungeon. There's a river of lava flowing through.
- To the north, you'll see a large, unlit torch.
- To the east, there's a cracked wall. Bomb it open.
- Eastern Room & Boss Key:
- In this room, you'll face a few Armos (stone statues that come to life when approached). Defeat them by hitting their exposed back.
- After defeating the Armos, a chest will appear containing the Boss Key. This key is used to open the door to the dungeon boss.
- Lighting the Torch & Activating the Lift:
- Return to the lower chamber with the lava flow.
- You need to light the large unlit torch to activate a lift.
- Puzzle: Look for a lit torch on a higher ledge across the lava. Use your Boomerang to draw a path from the lit torch to the unlit torch, carrying the flame.
- Once the torch is lit, a lift will activate, taking you up to the boss door on B1.
Floor B1 (Boss Chamber Access)
- Boss Door:
- Take the newly activated lift up. You'll arrive on a platform directly in front of the large boss door.
- Use the Boss Key to unlock the door. Prepare for battle!
Boss Battle: Blaaz, Master of Fire
Blaaz is the first boss of Phantom Hourglass, a fiery Golem-like creature. He has two distinct phases.
Phase 1: Three Blaaz
- Appearance: Blaaz will split into three identical, smaller versions of himself. One of them is the real Blaaz, the others are fakes.
- Identifying the Real Blaaz:
- The real Blaaz will have a slightly darker, more intense flame.
- More importantly, the real Blaaz will always be the one that doesn't change shape when the three versions move around. The fakes will often morph or flicker.
- Use your Boomerang to draw a path that hits all three Blaaz. The real one will be stunned, while the fakes will disappear.
- Attacking:
- Once the real Blaaz is stunned, quickly switch to your sword and attack him repeatedly.
- Repeat this process until he takes enough damage to enter Phase 2.
Phase 2: Merged Blaaz
- Appearance: The three Blaaz will merge into a single, larger, more powerful form. He will move around the arena, leaving a trail of fire.
- Strategy:
- Blaaz will periodically summon small fireballs or try to charge at you. Dodge these attacks.
- His weakness is his core, which is protected by a fiery shield.
- You need to use your Boomerang to draw a path that hits the three small orbs (which look like the smaller Blaaz from Phase 1) that orbit his body.
- Hitting all three orbs will temporarily douse his flame and expose his core.
- When his core is exposed, quickly attack it with your sword.
- Repeat this process until Blaaz is defeated.
Boss Rewards
- Upon defeating Blaaz, you will receive a Heart Container, increasing your maximum health.
- A blue portal will appear. Step into it to be transported to the chamber of the Spirit of Power.
After the Temple of Fire: The Spirit of Power
After defeating Blaaz, you'll meet the first of the three Spirits needed to power the Phantom Sword.
- Spirit of Power: In the chamber, you'll find the Spirit of Power, a red fairy. She will join Ciela, granting you new abilities and strengthening the Phantom Hourglass.
- New Ability: The Spirit of Power allows you to perform a powerful Spin Attack by drawing a circle around Link on the touch screen.
- Exit: A warp portal will appear, taking you back to the entrance of the Temple of Fire on the Isle of Ember.
Next Steps
With the Spirit of Power acquired, your next destination will be revealed. Head back to your ship and prepare to set sail for the next challenge in the Great Sea!
