Walkthrough: Goron Island & Goron Temple

Reaching Goron Island

After your encounter with the Ghost Ship and obtaining the Pure Bell, it's time to set sail for Goron Island. This island is located in the northeastern quadrant of the Northwestern Sea. Consult your sea chart and plot a course to the large, volcanic island. Be prepared for potential encounters with enemy ships and sea monsters along the way. Remember to use your Cannon to defend yourself and collect any treasure salvaged from defeated foes.

Exploring Goron Island

Upon landing on Goron Island, you'll immediately notice its fiery, volcanic landscape. The Gorons here are initially wary of outsiders. Your first task is to gain their trust.

Meeting the Goron Elder

  1. Head north from your landing point. You'll encounter several Gorons blocking paths.
  2. Speak to the Goron near the entrance to the main Goron village area. He'll mention the Elder and how he's the only one who can help you.
  3. Navigate through the winding paths of the village. You'll need to use your Boomerang to hit switches or activate mechanisms to clear some obstacles.
  4. Eventually, you'll reach the Elder's cave, identifiable by its larger entrance and the presence of more Gorons.
  5. Speak with the Goron Elder. He will challenge you to a test of knowledge about Goron history.

The Goron Elder's Quiz

The Elder will ask you a series of questions. The answers are usually found by talking to the various Gorons around the island. If you get a question wrong, you'll have to start the quiz over. Here are the answers:

  • Question 1: "What is the name of the Goron Elder's son?"
    Answer: Gongoron
  • Question 2: "How many Gorons are there on this island?"
Answer: The exact number can vary slightly based on your exploration, but the Elder is looking for the number of *adult* Gorons. The correct answer is usually 6.
  • Question 3: "What is the Goron's favorite food?"
    Answer: Rocks (specifically, delicious rocks!)

Successfully answering all questions will earn you the Elder's trust and open the path to the Goron Temple.

Goron Temple

The Goron Temple is located at the summit of Goron Island. The Elder will grant you access after you pass his quiz.

Temple Overview

This temple focuses heavily on using your Boomerang and Bombs, as well as navigating lava pits and solving pressure plate puzzles. Be mindful of the numerous Fire Keese and Red ChuChus that inhabit the temple.

Floor 1F: Entrance and Initial Puzzles

  1. Upon entering, you'll see a large lava pit. Use the moving platforms to cross.
  2. In the next room, you'll find a pressure plate. Step on it to open a door.
  3. You'll encounter your first Goron enemies here. Defeat them with your Sword.
  4. Look for a cracked wall. Use a Bomb to blast it open, revealing a hidden passage.
  5. Inside the passage, you'll find a chest containing a Small Key.
  6. Use the Small Key on the locked door in the main room to proceed.

Floor B1: Lava and Switches

  1. Descend to B1. This floor is dominated by lava and moving platforms.
  2. You'll see a series of unlit torches. Use your Boomerang to carry a flame from an existing torch to light the unlit ones. This will activate a platform or open a door.
  3. Be careful of the Fire Keese that will try to knock you into the lava.
  4. You'll encounter a room with several pressure plates. Some will activate platforms, while others might trigger traps. Experiment carefully. A common solution involves pushing a block onto one plate while you stand on another.
  5. Locate a chest containing the Bomb Bag Upgrade, allowing you to carry more bombs!
  6. Continue navigating the lava-filled rooms, using your Boomerang to hit distant switches or activate mechanisms.

Floor 2F: The Minecart Challenge

  1. Ascend to 2F. This floor introduces minecarts and tracks.
  2. You'll need to use your Boomerang to hit switches that change the direction of the minecart tracks.
  3. Hop into a minecart and ride it, changing tracks as needed to reach new areas.
  4. In one area, you'll find a large block. Push it onto a pressure plate to lower a section of the track, allowing your minecart to pass.
  5. You'll encounter a room with several Goron enemies and a large, cracked block. Use a Bomb to destroy the block, revealing a hidden passage or a switch.
  6. Eventually, you'll reach a room with a large, unlit torch in the center. Light it using your Boomerang and a nearby flame source. This will open the path to the boss.

Boss: Folly, the Unknown Flame

The boss of the Goron Temple is Folly, a fiery, rolling creature. This battle requires precise timing and strategic use of your items.

  1. Phase 1: Rolling Attack
    • Folly will roll around the arena, attempting to ram you.
    • Your goal is to get Folly to roll into the large, cracked pillars around the edge of the arena.
    • Stand near a pillar and dodge out of the way at the last moment, causing Folly to crash into it.
    • After crashing, Folly will be stunned for a short period.
  2. Phase 2: Vulnerable Core
    • While Folly is stunned, its fiery outer shell will temporarily dissipate, revealing a vulnerable core.
    • Quickly switch to your Bombs and throw one directly at Folly's core.
    • If successful, Folly will take damage and resume its rolling attack.
  3. Repeat and Conquer
    • Repeat the process: lure Folly into a pillar, stun it, and hit its core with a Bomb.
    • As Folly takes more damage, it will become faster and its rolling patterns might become more erratic. Stay agile and patient.
    • After several successful hits, Folly will be defeated.

Upon defeating Folly, you will be rewarded with a Heart Container and the Pure Metal, one of the three sacred metals needed to forge the Phantom Sword. Congratulations! You've conquered the Goron Temple.
