Boss Weaknesses & Attack Patterns

Conquering the bosses of Spirit Tracks requires more than just a sharp sword; it demands strategic use of your items and keen observation of their attack patterns. This section will break down each major boss, detailing their weaknesses, how to exploit them, and what to expect from their assaults.

Stagnox (Forest Temple)

Phase 1: Armored Beetle

  • Weakness: Exposed underside.
  • Attack Patterns:
    • Charge: Stagnox will charge directly at Link.
    • Stomp: It will occasionally stomp, creating a small shockwave.
    • Larva Summon: After taking some damage, it will summon small larvae that crawl around the arena.
  • Strategy:
    1. When Stagnox charges, use the Whirlwind (found in the Forest Temple) to blow away the armor on its back. This will briefly expose a weak point on its underside.
    2. Once the armor is gone, Stagnox will flip over, revealing its glowing purple belly. Quickly run up and slash at its belly with your Sword.
    3. Repeat this process. After a few hits, it will summon larvae. Defeat these quickly as they can be a nuisance.
    4. Continue to use the Whirlwind to expose its belly and attack until it transitions to Phase 2.

Phase 2: Flying Beetle

  • Weakness: Its exposed belly and the larvae it summons.
  • Attack Patterns:
    • Flight & Dive: Stagnox will fly around the arena, occasionally diving down to attack.
    • Larva Drop: It will drop explosive larvae from above.
  • Strategy:
    1. Stagnox will now be flying. Its belly is still its weak point, but it's harder to reach.
    2. When Stagnox drops explosive larvae, wait for them to land. Before they explode, pick one up using your Boomerang.
    3. Aim the Boomerang with the larva at Stagnox while it's flying. If you hit it, the larva will explode, stunning Stagnox and causing it to fall to the ground, once again exposing its belly.
    4. Rush in and deliver as many Sword slashes as possible to its belly.
    5. Repeat this strategy until Stagnox is defeated.

Fraaz (Snow Temple)

Phase 1: Ice and Fire Duo

  • Weakness: Opposite element attacks.
  • Attack Patterns:
    • Elemental Projectiles: Fraaz will shoot either fireballs or ice balls at Link.
    • Elemental Aura: It will sometimes surround itself with an aura of fire or ice, making it immune to that element.
    • Dash Attack: Fraaz may dash across the arena.
  • Strategy:
    1. Fraaz will alternate between being engulfed in fire and ice. You need to hit it with the opposite element.
    2. When Fraaz is covered in ice, use the Torch (found in the Snow Temple) to light up the unlit torches around the arena. This will melt its icy shield.
    3. When Fraaz is covered in fire, use the Boomerang to extinguish the lit torches, creating a cold environment that douses its flames.
    4. Once its elemental shield is down, Fraaz will be vulnerable. Attack it with your Sword.
    5. Pay close attention to the color of its aura to determine which elemental attack to use.
    6. Repeat this process until Fraaz is defeated.

Phytops (Ocean Temple)

Phase 1: Tentacle Terror

  • Weakness: Its eyes.
  • Attack Patterns:
    • Tentacle Slam: Phytops will slam its tentacles down onto the platform.
    • Ink Blast: It will occasionally shoot ink at Link, obscuring the screen.
    • Spike Ball Summon: It will summon spike balls that roll around the arena.
  • Strategy:
    1. Phytops will emerge from the water, revealing its large eyes. Your goal is to hit these eyes.
    2. Use the Bow (found in the Ocean Temple) to shoot arrows at its eyes. You'll need to be quick and accurate.
    3. After hitting an eye, Phytops will retract. It will then slam its tentacles down. Avoid these by moving to safe spots.
    4. When it resurfaces, continue to target its eyes with arrows.
    5. If it shoots ink, quickly wipe your screen to clear it.
    6. After enough hits, it will transition to Phase 2.

Phase 2: Exposed Core

  • Weakness: Its central core.
  • Attack Patterns:
    • Rapid Tentacle Slams: More frequent and varied tentacle attacks.
    • Water Jet: It will shoot powerful jets of water.
    • Spike Ball Barrage: It will summon more spike balls.
  • Strategy:
    1. Phytops will now expose its central core, which is its main weak point. However, it's protected by a rotating shield.
    2. You need to use the Whip (found in the Ocean Temple) to grab the spike balls that Phytops summons.
    3. Once you've grabbed a spike ball, swing it at the rotating shield to break it.
    4. With the shield temporarily gone, quickly switch to your Bow and fire arrows at the exposed core.
    5. Be mindful of its increased tentacle attacks and water jets. Dodge and weave to avoid damage.
    6. Repeat the process of using the Whip on spike balls to break the shield and then firing arrows at the core until Phytops is defeated.

Cragma (Fire Temple)

Phase 1: Rock Golem

  • Weakness: Its glowing weak points.
  • Attack Patterns:
    • Rock Throw: Cragma will throw large rocks at Link.
    • Fist Slam: It will slam its fists down, creating shockwaves.
    • Rolling Attack: Cragma will curl into a ball and roll around the arena.
  • Strategy:
    1. Cragma is a massive rock golem. You'll notice glowing weak points on its body.
    2. Use the Bow to shoot arrows at these glowing weak points. There are typically three to hit.
    3. After hitting all three weak points, Cragma will become stunned and fall to its knees, revealing a larger weak point on its head/chest.
    4. Quickly switch to your Sword and slash at this exposed weak point.
    5. Avoid its rock throws and fist slams. During its rolling attack, try to stay out of its path.
    6. Repeat this process until Cragma transitions to Phase 2.

Phase 2: Lava Monster

  • Weakness: The lava bubbles it creates.
  • Attack Patterns:
    • Lava Bursts: Cragma will cause lava to erupt from the ground.
    • Fist Slam (Enhanced): Its fist slams will now create larger, more damaging shockwaves.
    • Magma Breath: It will breathe a stream of magma.
  • Strategy:
    1. Cragma will now be submerged in lava, making it harder to reach. It will occasionally create large lava bubbles.
    2. You need to use the Bomb Bag (found in the Fire Temple) to throw bombs into these lava bubbles.
    3. When a bomb explodes inside a lava bubble, it will create a geyser of lava that hits Cragma, stunning it and causing it to temporarily rise out of the lava.
    4. While Cragma is stunned and exposed, quickly use the Bow to shoot arrows at its head/chest weak point.
    5. Be careful to avoid the lava bursts and magma breath.
    6. Repeat the process of bombing lava bubbles to stun Cragma and then shooting arrows at its weak point until it is defeated.

Byrne (Tower of Spirits)

Phase 1: Armored Opponent

  • Weakness: Exposed back.
  • Attack Patterns:
    • Energy Orb: Byrne will shoot a fast-moving energy orb at Link.
    • Dash Attack: He will dash across the arena, attempting to strike Link.
    • Spinning Attack: Byrne will perform a spinning attack with his claw.
  • Strategy:
    1. Byrne is a formidable foe. His front is armored, so you need to attack his back.
    2. The key to this fight is to have Princess Zelda (as a Phantom) distract Byrne. Command Zelda to stand in front of Byrne using the Stylus.
    3. While Byrne is focused on Zelda, quickly move behind him.
    4. Once behind him, use your Whip to grab the glowing orb on his back. Pull it off.
    5. With the orb removed, Byrne will be stunned. Quickly slash at his exposed back with your Sword.
    6. Repeat this strategy, always using Zelda to create an opening.

Malladus (Tower of Spirits - Final Boss)

Phase 1: Armored Demon Train

  • Weakness: The glowing weak points on his body.
  • Attack Patterns:
    • Fire Breath: Malladus will breathe fire along the tracks.
    • Energy Orbs: He will shoot multiple energy orbs.
    • Charge: Malladus will charge down the tracks.
  • Strategy:
    1. This battle takes place on your train. You need to use your train's cannon.
    2. Malladus will have several glowing weak points on his body. Aim your Cannon at these weak points and fire.
    3. Avoid his fire breath by changing tracks or slowing down/speeding up.
    4. After hitting enough weak points, Malladus will become temporarily stunned.
    5. Continue to target his weak points with the cannon until he transitions to Phase 2.

Phase 2: Demon King Possessed Zelda

  • Weakness: The Spirit Flute's song.
  • Attack Patterns:
    • Dark Energy Blasts: Malladus (in Zelda's body) will shoot dark energy blasts.
    • Summon Minions: He will summon smaller enemies to attack Link.
    • Charge Attack: He will charge at Link.
  • Strategy:
    1. This phase requires cooperation with Princess Zelda (as a Phantom).
    2. Malladus will be attacking Link. You need to use the Spirit Flute.
    3. Play the specific song that Zelda teaches you (the Song of Awakening) on the Spirit Flute. This will temporarily stun Malladus.
    4. While Malladus is stunned, Zelda (as a Phantom) will be able to attack him. Command Zelda to attack using the Stylus.
    5. After Zelda attacks, Malladus will recover and continue his assault.
    6. Repeat playing the song on the Spirit Flute to stun him, then command Zelda to attack.
    7. This is a test of timing and coordination. Keep dodging his attacks and repeat the process until Malladus is forced out of Zelda's body.

Phase 3: Malladus and Chancellor Cole

  • Weakness: Chancellor Cole's hats.
  • Attack Patterns:
    • Malladus Roar: Malladus will roar, creating a powerful shockwave.
    • Cole's Magic: Chancellor Cole will cast various spells and summon projectiles.
    • Headbutt: Malladus will attempt to headbutt Link.
  • Strategy:
    1. Malladus is now a giant demon, with Chancellor Cole riding on his head.
    2. You need to use the Bow to shoot arrows at Chancellor Cole's hats. There are two hats to remove.
    3. Once both hats are removed, Cole will be vulnerable.
    4. Malladus will then charge at Link. You need to dodge his charge.
    5. After he charges, Malladus will be temporarily stunned. This is your chance to attack.
    6. Use the Whip to grab Chancellor Cole and pull him off Malladus's head.
    7. Once Cole is on the ground, quickly slash at him with your Sword.
    8. Repeat this process: shoot hats, dodge charge, whip Cole, slash with sword.
    9. After enough hits, Malladus will be defeated, and the final confrontation will begin.

Phase 4: Final Blow

  • Weakness: The Spirit Flute and the Light Arrows.
  • Attack Patterns:
    • Desperate Attacks: Malladus will use a combination of his previous attacks in a more frantic manner.
  • Strategy:
    1. This is the final sequence. Malladus will be weakened but still dangerous.
    2. Princess Zelda will charge up a powerful Light Arrow. Your role is to create an opening.
    3. Play the Spirit Flute to stun Malladus one last time.
    4. Once he's stunned, Zelda will fire the Light Arrow.
    5. You will then have a final opportunity to deliver the finishing blow with your Sword.
    6. Time your actions carefully, and the Demon King will be vanquished!
