Introduction & Basic Gameplay
Welcome, aspiring train engineer, to the world of New Hyrule! This guide will help you navigate the treacherous tracks and mysterious dungeons of The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks. Before you embark on your grand adventure, let's cover the fundamental controls and initial steps to get you started on the right track.
Initial Setup and Controls
Upon starting a new game, you'll be prompted to enter your name. Choose wisely, as this will be your identity throughout your journey!
- Stylus Control: The entirety of Spirit Tracks is played using the Nintendo DS stylus on the touch screen. This includes character movement, combat, item usage, and menu navigation.
- Movement: Tap where you want Link to walk. To run, tap and hold the stylus in the direction you wish to go.
- Interacting: Tap on objects, characters, or points of interest to interact with them. This is how you'll open chests, talk to NPCs, and examine your surroundings.
- Combat: Tap on enemies to attack them with your sword. For more advanced techniques, such as the Spin Attack, draw a circle around Link with your stylus.
- Item Usage: Your equipped items will appear on the bottom screen. Tap an item to select it, then tap where you want to use it. For example, to use the Boomerang, tap its icon, then draw a path for it to follow.
- Menu Access: Tap the "Menu" icon on the bottom screen (or press the START button) to access your inventory, map, and other game options.
Your First Steps in Aboda Village
Your adventure begins in the quaint Aboda Village. As a young train engineer, your immediate goal is to reach Hyrule Castle to receive your engineer certificate.
- Wake Up and Talk to Alfonzo: You'll start in Link's house. After a brief tutorial on movement, head outside. Your mentor, Alfonzo, will be waiting for you. Speak with him to learn about your upcoming journey.
- Collect the Engineer's Clothes: Alfonzo will direct you to your house to change into your official engineer's uniform. Re-enter Link's house and interact with the wardrobe to equip the Engineer's Clothes.
- Head to the Train Station: Once dressed, follow Alfonzo to the Aboda Village Train Station. He'll give you a quick rundown of train controls.
- Train Controls Tutorial:
- Speed Lever: Located on the right side of the bottom screen. Drag it up to increase speed, down to decrease.
- Whistle: Tap the whistle icon to sound it. Useful for alerting animals or people on the tracks.
- Switch Tracks: When approaching a track switch, tap the icon that appears to change your direction. Pay close attention to the map on the top screen to ensure you're heading the right way.
- Travel to Hyrule Castle Town: Your first train ride will be a straightforward journey to Hyrule Castle Town. Follow Alfonzo's instructions, maintaining a steady speed and switching tracks as needed. Don't worry about enemies or complex routes just yet; this is a gentle introduction.
Upon arrival at Hyrule Castle Town, disembark your train. You're now ready to continue your journey towards becoming a certified engineer and, ultimately, a hero!
